Sega still makes Sonic games!? Wait that is right it's only Sega franchise that still sells on a consistent basis even though the quality is typically questionable. The only reason I am somewhat interested in Sega because there massive back catalog of arcade games that haven't been ported yet. But outside of cheap compilation pack and a few good games I missed during the previous gen I don't buy to many new Sega games.
True, and while I have like a lot of new games, I've been looking back on the games and chatting with people via Skype, and we usually talk about them, trying to understand why things are the way they are.Quote:

This whole thing about direction, so far, has been about Sega of Japan taking over Sega and not knowing what to do with Sonic. Like how older fans raged over Unleashed but kids liked it, so Izuka made Colors for kids and Nintendo fans, but most Sonic fans around on the net ARE Nintendo fans. It's just really messed up, and we're not even getting on the fact they ignore their other stables of games so much, just look at the roster for Project X zone.

Castle of Illusion 2013 only makes me more sad about the recent Sonic games tbh.

Sounds like good news to me! Atlus and SEGA can really go hand in hand with this. Both companies are known for being against the grain, unpredictable, cutting edge, edgy, and ahead of their time. SEGA has plenty of IP's to offer Atlus to revitalize or mold into something unexpected.Quote:

The issue with Sonic overall is whoever said that Sonic was about speed. Sonic was about exploring the environment first. You would occasionally end up in moments of blistering speed(something even Sonic Adventure got right), but that was never what the games were actually about. If you didn't take the time to at least grab 50 coins, and survive until you could grab the Chaos emeralds, you were going to get a "bad" (I think the first game was the only one with Robotnik taunting you for not finding the emeralds) ending. Also, just running to the right as fast as you can would get you killed.
Sonic 1, 2, 3 & Knuckles all have a taunting ending for people who didn't finish every special stage.Quote:

Sonic & Sega Racing Transformed is amazing. But that's because it's essentially Outrun 3 in kart racer fancy dress.
Generally speaking Sonic never really had the depth to justify 20 games. I had enough of it by the time Sonic 3 came around. You can't add in a lot more elements without ruining the simplicity.
He's got just as much depth as a fat plumber rescuing a princess has. That is to say, the basic premise is meaningless so long as they have creative people coming up with interesting games for them to be in.Quote:

Sonic games were marketed and loved because he was an irreverent 90's "cool" character with awesome speed. The first few Sonic (1-3+ Knuckles and CD) allowed you to blaze through the games OR go a bit slower to explore things. They didn't punish you for playing fast by making the game less fun... they only made it clear that there was more you COULD be doing.
SA 1 and 2 were both decent at this, but had their own issues as well... that is also where the Sonic games started losing their identity. Too many other characters, too many moments of trying to force the character to be cool instead of sticking with the persona people knew and loved.
This Atlus deal could mean good things... but it could also go very poorly. I'll refrain from judgement till I see what they do. But there are, as many noted, LOTS of games that Sega has barely touched that would give Atlus some great IP's to work with. I think many picked RPG's because Atlus is well known for doing good RPG's to many people. And of course a new traditional PS, or Skies of Arcadia, or hell, even a decent Sonic RPG could be something they might do incredible work on.
But the Golden axe, Streets of Rage, Altered Beast, and many other series that have been wasting away are certainly not bad places to start... The biggest problem with some is that the "retro cool" factor isn't really there like it is for the Nintendo IP's, so they just might not think it's worth the time and effort.
Atlus doing Sega IP's? that means that Orbi is real and Sega will come back with its own console and old times will be relived and and..

As far as the whole "consistent identity" thing is concerned, I believe that Unleashed, Colors, and Generations at least tried to have a consistent image.Quote:
