Sega are better off not doing another Altered Beast or Golden Axe really.
Unless... what are Platinum Games doing?
I like Sega best when they come out of nowhere with something new. In an ideal world I'd like to see them embrace indie gaming. Start putting out lots of stuff by crazy dudes with new ideas and just give them a bit of a polish and port them to every platform like what Curve Studios are doing but on a bigger scale.
Main problem with Sega now is R&D1 are doing Yakuza game, Yakuza game, Yakuza game. R&D2 is doing Sonic, Sonic, Sonic. Those are supposed to be their flagship teams and they're just mindlessly doing sequels. Where's the excitement?
Sega has gradually lost all of its talent in the last ten years. They are just a publisher conglomerate now that shuts down a purchased external studio after one game fails to sell a million or more.
I don't think Sega's done anything worth my time since the Dreamcast went under. The only thing they seem to be good at is making poor decisions.
Sega is, right now, at the highest point they've been since the DC days, IMO. Focused on areas they needed to, prepared themselves well for the shifting winds of the industry.
The Atlus purchase not only gives them strong IP for the JP market (MegaTen, in particular), but use of Atlus USA's superior Western localization team and effort. That should alleviate some of the issues Sega has had in bringing over games.
With The Creative Assembly and Relic they've now just about cornered the RTS market. Hardlight gives them a very competent mobile team.
Nagoshi's team, and the rest of the internal teams, are still doing okay. Problem is that the Western offices aren't bringing those games over. Hopefully the Atlus USA buy helps them on that. They are lacking is the silliness of releasing arcade games and not porting them to the PC market (their arcade boards run on PC hardware), so they need to fix that ASAP. Three Rings is another studio they should be a bit more focused on, as MMOs or MORPGs or whatever the hell they're called can be quite lucrative, but flash and java are both on their way out.
I'd like to see them finally use their digital distribution and streaming content patents (iirc, they do have some) and open up their own "storefront" for the PC market and mobile platforms. Pipe dream, perhaps, but dare to dream.
As for the Sonic games:
They've gotten better, and the day sections in Unleashed were the start of that direction. No, they aren't the height that S3&K reached, but they're quite good and some verge on great (Colors, Generations). Lost World seems to have been rather unfairly reviewed, judging by the funny gifs folks have made of several video reviewer's apparent inability to actually play video games with any skill whatsoever.
First realization is that Sega of the 90's is not the manifestation of Sega of today.
Secondly, what direction? Seriously, if capitalizing on some yesteryear mascot that still manages to merit some degree of popularity and monetary value - then that is the current direction.
agreed 100%, great post man. i've been saying this last gen was sega's finest since the DC era, there's just old fans who don't care to try their new stuff/want the reverse the clock & bring back teams a decade gone, and others who just parrot the meme that sega sucks elsewhere, for the most part.
even weirder given spiffy's post soon after, yeah
