Should you really expect people to know games for systems that they've probably never played, like the Turbografx? Omitting Genesis shmups is harder to understand, since that system WAS popular here, but the TG16... even though its shmup library is obviously the best of the generation, it'd be very hard for Western gamers to ever have good knowledge of the system, since it did so poorly here. It's sad but true.

Also, some SNES game(s) should be on the list. I mean, I have all three major systems of that generation (plus addons), and Gradius III on the SNES is still my overall favorite shmup of the generation... the top SNES shmups are great. Sure, the SNES doesn't have quite as many great shmups as the Genesis, which doesn't have as many as the TG16/CD, but it has some.

R-Type is the most well known entry of the series, but even if they think Super R-Type is so great, why post it instead of R-Type II? How many SNES fans have even heard of Xevious, let alone Raptor: Call of the Shadows?

They actually mention the arcade version of U.N. Squadron, so they know of its existence. But even if you chalk up gameplay to opinion/taste (slowdown = improvement?), how are the SNES graphics better unless you didn't even actually compare them?

But that's not what we were talking about. You're actually arguing the point I was making, about casual retro gamers only being familiar with the most popular games on the most popular consoles. Why even do a shooter list at all if your knowledge of them is based on a few SNES games and whatever else you can manage to remember ever playing or hearing about to pad a top ten list? What's next, a digital comic/adventure top ten loaded with NES/SNES entries?

This isn't just a couple of guys making videos in their basement either, it's a professional video game site that is one of the primary sources of gaming knowledge for the types of people in that video.

I prefer the music and gameplay of the NES version. The stages are just too repetitive, even compared to other versions.

Holy crap that Screwattack top ten shooters video really showed their true colors. Clips of them holding an NES gamepad while they mention the Wii Virtual Console. Obviously emulated gameplay footage, complete with overly sharp graphics and sound. And the proliferation of NINTENDO NINTENDO NINTENDO! Everything they mention are at least competent shooters, but this best ten list is nothing but a megacorp pissing contest. Nintendo didn't even make those shooters.

These media conglomerates and money whoring video types need to pick a new term. "Top ten most likely to give us hits" or "Top ten best sellers in half-a-minute's research."

Yes, because when I hear shooters I think SNES. God, Screwattack needs to go away. It makes me sick that regular people go to them and IGN to learn about classic gaming. All you're getting is revisionist nonsense from brand loyal retards whose first console was a NES. What is the point of stamping non-nintendo out of history? How does it benefit them? They can't just let people play and like what they want? They just want to impose their will on any newbies. "You will only like what we grew up with. Anything else sucks"

It's just very irritating when you try to share the stuff you like with other people and they write it off as shit before you even turn it on. As someone who wants to preserve actual video game history, those people drive me nuts.

A big game site in Brazil despises Sega and it's consoles. Which is absurd when you consider that the Master System ( +-5 million units sold ) and the MD where the most popular consoles here during the 90's.
Now thanks to emulators and this awful habit that we have in copying everything about Murica, i have to take the same shit around here too.

It does have proper shooters, although Bangai-O is the only(?) one which uses strictly 2D graphics. But it is brought up regularly in non-Nintendo fanatic discussions.
