I guess digitized graphics, either live or cg would solve a lot of it, time wise anyway. Then again, with a palette as limited as the MD's retouching sprites would presumably still take ages.
CG might work well for a shooter though.

Any news on this?
I really like what I've seen and the producers of the game aren't outputting any news for some time. :(
REALLY looking forward to this.
Adding Turrican-style run'n gun stages means that this game will be delayed by another two or three years. :(
That is a huge mistake many indie devs fall victim to: Instead of simply finishing their game they start adding more and more content and features. Instead of making a decent shmup these guys turn Antarex into a genre mix that basically requires at least as much if not way more work than two completely seperate games would have required.
This is a game I've been really looking forward too. I really wish they'd release this as a shmup and then make a run 'n gun sequel later. Doing both simultaneously greatly increases the chance of them abandoning the project before finishing it.
And we don't need an elaborate story with tons of dialogue and characters. Just a game where you shoot stuff.
Ah, the old feature creep. Oh well, I'm happy to wait for an awesome product :)
It's not often I agree with you, but for once I do 100%. The only thing I can add is that genre mixing is also risky in a way that it may polarize the fan base - some will probably hate the run 'n' gun stages, kind of how people hate the overhead stages of Thunder Force II. I do love run 'n' guns, but yeah, getting that in a separate later game is so much better.
Somehow the only time genre mixing works, as far as I can see, is when you play a game like GTA. It's the ability to choose, to an extent, depending on the mission, which genre to use: Ie, you can focus more on shooting, fighting, driving or flying to obtain the goal as you prefer.
When the genre change is forced on you it can be jarring and lose flow of the game, with limited systems such as the MD I agree that a game should not try too hard to be more than one genre and stick to its core theme.
It can be like having pizza in a Thai restaurant; it may be the best pizza you ever had, but it's not fitting. I'm still really looking forward to this game however and if each game type is done well I'll be pleased anyway.
Personally I'm looking forward to this. The game doesn't have to be the best SHMUP out there. It just needs to have fun levels with good on-foot sections and I'm sold.
With that said, I'd like to see the option to play just the on-foot levels or just the flying levels
But at least you can choose to not eat pizza.
The real problem with genre mixers is that besides the fact it's about as complex as making two separate games (because that's what it is, really), players usually just want to play one genre, i.e. the genre switches are just outright jarring and unwanted. Not to mention that maybe the player is good at only one of the genres...
Of the FaseBonus releases, this is the one that I've been most stoked about. I'm thankful for all the other ones (any new Genesis release is a welcome one in my home), but , tbh, they've all been puzzlers or rather simplistic in design. I'm not even counting Magic Girl on these, since it was a re-release. This game simply marks a higher level of dedication; one that I'm most excited to experience once released.
We are working in the engine of the game, designing levels and other stuff. The game is progressing at a good pace, but there are not really great news to give.
About the run&gun level, we will try to make it a good experience. We are working in a Mega Drive engine as well to be used for any future 1985alternativo projects, so make a run&gun level will not delay Antarex more than any shoot'em up level would do.
^ Sounds good to hear! Thanks for coming here and sharing information about the development. I'm really looking forward to play your game, it looks very impressive so far!
Thanks for the update!
Also, it's nice to hear that I'm not the only one that really wants this game to come out! :D
KRYTEN: Well, we don't eat curry every night if that's what you think. In fact I remember quite clearly last June: Mr. Lister had a pizza. You remember?
(LISTER nods in agreement.)
LISTER: Yeah.
KRYTEN: And you didn't like it. But then I poured curry sauce all over it and he just yummed it up!
Vaporware?
It's only been a few months since the devs gave their insight. Too early to call it vaporware imo.
Hi Guys, I'm Kusfo, Manveru's mate on 1985Alternativo. We're still working on the game obviously, only that we've lost a it of speed lately. The engine for most of the game is complete. The demo with the first level already shown must of the features needed for completing all the game. Now we're on the process of putting all the resources for the other levels, and also working on the platform level. We cannot give a release date yet, as we may found problems putting all the game together, but we hope it no to be very far away in time...
^Awesome! Take your time to make a polished and great game. No stress, we aren't in a hurry :). Remember Miyamoto: "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever". Though it didn't work on Duke Nukem Forever :P.
You guys need any help with packaging design and cover art?
Thanks for updating. Keep on rocking!
Yeah take your time. looking forward to a new shmup!
Thank you for the kind words!
I'm posting here a poster that we'll have at GamesCon, with some of the game art.

Also looking forward to it. I'll definitely buy the game when a cartridge is available.
Man, dat poster makes me excited!
That looks sick. Definitely looking like the best production thus far from FaseBonus/1985Alternativo. Can't wait.
I'm also posting the pics featured on the poster

That is beautiful. I hope you won't mind a little feedback, but on that last pic, the water seems a little plain.
Is it possible to maybe add a gradient or tiny waves?
Hello Stika;
I´m at charge of cave stage. Thanks for your feedback. I want to try some shape effects with that transversal cut of a lake, animate its surface. I´m working on it to have something attractive in movement. But I´ll take good note of your comments, so all of them are welcome.
Thanks a lot and I hope you like
@vakapp
Game looks lovely, though I'd like some more contrast. The first screenshot for example has a background just a tad too busy, makes seeing bullets and enemies difficult. A dull grey for the buildings would make it less pretty, but perhaps better from a gameplay perspective.
Will there be a ROM release? I will gladly pay for it.
Very very good see the game developers here.
I wonder if the game designers will keep the Axelay like stage, the skull boss is very nice, but I feel that scene specifically runs at a low frame rate.
