Shenmue coming to PS4

Interestingly, for Shenmue and Yakuza fans, Boyes says it is those games that Sony are focusing on.

"We get a ton of requests for Yakuza, a ton of requests for Shenmue. We see the lists," Boyes said.

"We have a person that compiles those lists and prioritises based on how many requests we've gotten. And I think to date there's well over 10,000 mentions across like forum threads and stuff like that. So those are the ones we're focused on."

Boyes also commented on when fans should expect to start to see the result of Sony's work getting ports onto PlayStation platforms.

"I would say within the next six months we'll have at least one if not a few announcements to make on that front."

Whether Boyes is talking about the PS4, the PS Vita, or even the PS3, remains to be seen.

So, Shenmue 3 confirmed?

It sounds more like a port of shenmue 1 and/or 2 for PS4 is a "maybe". Far cry from a solid announcement of a port, let alone a sequel.

If they can get this done, I hope they sell well... maybe it will make Sega actually dust off the series and do something good with it.

I'm afraid a hd shenmue version won't sell well I mean what;s the point. I only want shenmue 3 and 4 and 5. and if that is going to happen. oh my....

I'm not getting my hopes up. This has the potential to be huge. But until I see some kind of solid announcement from Sony or Sega, I'll wait and see first. Certainly seems promising.

I don't know. a prettied up Shenmue (especially if it was a combined 1+2) that fixed the control/camera issues and a bit of added content... I'd be down for that.

I don't think it would do any COD/MOH sales numbers, but if it could sell enough to get Sega interested in actually continuing the series... or at least one final game to cap it off... that would be fine with me.

there are no camera issues in shenmue and it's already in hd pretty much when you use vga

It is pretty for it's time (played it in VGA), but it's hardly "HD" quality as one would expect from a new game. And it did have some camera issues (mostly the second), and certainly could benefit from an updated dual analog control scheme.

I love the game, still own both of them, but there is absolutely room for improvement on the new systems.

That and I could REALLY hope for them to pop in a full arcade room with a dozen + sega arcade games fully playable.

And on the new systems I'd love to see the passport come back and be updated with some awesome stuff too.

pls explain to me the camera problems in shenmue 2.

That it wasn't always giving you the best view for a particular situation? Not saying it was atrocious, game breaking, or overly distracting or anything, but they could certainly tweak it to be better.

I haven't played Shenmue for a while but if I remember, when you go into towns, Ryo turns semi-transparent, they could remove that, and possibly angle the camera a bit further away from him so he isn't so close to it, the control was also a bit tank-like and whilst it never really hindered the game, turning him was a bit slow.

And obviously, higher polygon counts for the models, better resolution textures and 16:9 presentation would all be welcome.

Are you really saying you can't think of a single way a ~13 year old game with a single analog stick control that was originally designed for an even older system couldn't be improved on a new system just released in the end of 2013?

I mean I'm not talking story or crazy gameplay changes here. But there's been a hell of a lot of improvements and refinements done since Shenmue was released.

They could absolutely update the game to be MUCH better in a technical standpoint if they wished.

Doesn't mean they will of course, and I'd bank on a relatively sloppy port with a minimum of work, something like the "HD filter" crap they do with most of the old genesis games.

if shenmue comes out ill buy it.

It depends how it is marketed. If they announce a new sequel, they could easily market a compilation disc containing the original games prior to the release of the new game! I'm pretty sure the hype alone would drive sales.

It's misleading because the title should be:

"Shemnue remake a possibility on the PS4" Because that's all it is. They have not even said there is any real positive talks with Sega on it, just that it's something they are working on. And that's saying nothing about Shenmue 3 in any way shape or form like you implied was the case in the post.


So basically the article you presented was completely opposite of your title and the post itself. I'd say that's fairly misleading yes. lol

It's not a matter of taste. Taste would be "I think the art style could be better".

It's a matter of pure fact. You can do the game in:

Higher resolution.
Higher poly count.
better/more consistent frame rate
higher quality textures.
larger/more detailed environment
Better quality lighting.
More content.

All of that is something 100% doable/easier on a new system. That isn't an argument, it's just a fact of newer hardware. Anyone who can't admit that the game cannot be done in a technical fashion better on the new systems is simply not being truthful.

I also liked Shenmue 1 and 2 just fine. But that doesn't mean they were perfect, nor does it mean there isn't a single area they couldn't be improved upon with a system with far, far more raw horse power and access to higher storage capacity.

Even something as basic as making the controls follow standard dual analog stick design would improve the game for a large number of people, especially newer gamers who are experiencing it for the first time.

Having a second analog stick meaning you're able to control the camera more fluently = better

i don't wanna jump the gun here, but i feel pretty safe saying Yakuza 5/Ishin BD combo will probably launch simultaneously with Shenmue 1/2 HD + 3 (with passport discs, hope you guys kept your Sega net ID's) combo

no, it's a photo taken last year, i wanna say - mark has translated for at least one (i wanna say more) of his GDC keynotes; bear in mind that they're old friends from their mutual time at sega.

i'm not saying we won't see Shenmue 3, just that everyone gets a hardon when they see these two together. you know who i wanna see Yu with? Yoshida, tweeting that ITS A DONE DEAL

They haven't really lost the Shenmue License. Just the patent on the US logo expired a few years ago. That's it.

I bought Shenmue 2 on Dreamcast when it first came out. It was epic and glorious and felt way more large scale than the first one.

The xbox remake DESTROYED the gorgeous soundtrack and for that alone I refuse to accept it. I'll take my rocking music and subtitle for part 2. Its a damn shame if they dont make a part 3, the way the story was going in 2 built up 3 so bad I really really pray it comes out, regardless of what system.

if a "remake" of 1 and 2 are coming to the ps4 its almost most likely used as a test balloon to gauge interest for shenmue 3
if the games perform well sega may start production

or if it underperforms ( or sega just claims so ) they can say that they were interested but that there just wasnt a market for it
