10 most popular Genesis games?

Just trying to release some pressure from the main top 180ish Md games I'm currently 24/7 dedicated to.

Quality and personal opinions aside and based on pure popularity back then and now, are these the 10 most popular MD games?

In no particular order:

Sonic 1
Sonic 2
Sonic 3&K
Mortal Kombat I
Sor II
TFIV
Zero Wing (heh)
Aladdin
NHL'94

as for the tenth, I'm not sure between Gunstar Heroes, NBA Jam, Virtua Racing, EWJ & SF2'

Maybe TFIV is less popular than some of these.

What do you think? (no, I'm not curating another list, this won't be an ongoing process...).

Sonic - While the first game it just isn't as popular as the 2nd game.
Sonic 2 - Yes one of the most popular Genesis games, then and now.
Sonic 3 & K - I don't remember it being that popular back in the day, good game but snowed under by other games of that era.
Mortal Kombat 1 - Infamous never popular.
SOR2 - Yes I remember this as being a popular game.
TFIV - You really couldn't be bothered to write the full name? I guess this is Team Fortress 4? dunno.
Zero Wing - a mocked game, not popular.
Aladdin - I remember this as being a popular game back then, and still holds up today.
NHL'94 - I've never been a sports game person, and I don't remember this being popular back then.

I agree with most, but this was and still is one of the most popular genesis games (if you don't like sports games this is thee remembered sports game on system at least for many). I don't even like hockey but trying to beat those fucking Blackhawks is a time killer. I wouldn't put it in the top 10 though, or maybe I would it has a following and is still popular today. Popular kind of rubs sells. Aladdan I guess yup.

Sonic 3 wasn't popular at all. Neither was Thunder Force IV. Aladdin was, Jurassic Park was, Mortal Kombat was. People did not go by quality but what was advertised in the magazines and on TV.

Popularity does not matter. At all.

NHL'94 even has Killscreen articles writing about how popular this game still is in 2013.

This one, the 3+1 Sonics, Aladdin & Mortal Kombat 1 should not be open to any debate. They are or were massively popular. Popular as in "games everyone talks about, games the Genesis is known for, games that sold millions of copies, games that were debated in the US Senate..." etc etc

I forgot about Jurassic Park. Maybe it was a notch less popular than VR and all the press the SVP game got.

Gunstar Heroes is probably the most genesis praised game in recent years (wasnt recieved that well nor that popular back in 1993), I think it deserves a place on this list. And yes S3&K was everything everybody talked about in 1994 when speaking about the genesis. The lock-on, the 16+16 meg game, etc etc come on.
Some still consider it to be the best game on the system, so that at least proves it's massively popular.
Maybe Team Fortress IV should be considered more as an underdog in the eyes of non-gamer people IE the people that just played the genesis from time to time back at their (smarter) neighbour's house.

I think Castle of Illusion fits the bill.

I think SF2 should be on that list. Maybe NBA Jam, Lion King (I'm not big on this game, but I believe it sold very well back in the day), Strider and Golden Axe. Here's my stab (realizing this is purely subjective and I'm going off my perception of what sold well and/or what caused a lot of buzz).

Yes we agree that we are talking about *percieved* popularity, not sell figures, etc. so it's a personal choice.
Madden was only popular in the US, nobody knows about it in Europe nor Brazil (nor Japan), both markets where the MD outsold the SNES, but at least the most popular Madden game should be here. Isn't it 94?

Castle of illusion yes, too. and NBA Jam for sure.

are we talking current retro-scene talk or sales-age? cause the sports scene was beloved as fuck (rightfully), but while Herzog Zwei sold like booty buttcheeks in the day, it comes up constantly in talks. PS II, Strider, Earthworm Jim etc likewise...give me a metric here, i read classic gaming mags alla time and can use the reader lists as go-to if nothing else!

coming up constantly among diehard retrogamer's talks is not a sign of popularity ;) IE MUSHA is not a *popular* game. Mario or Pokemon are popular games.

I think we aim at a mix from both popularity back then and popularity now. Herzog Zwei is neither. Being groundbreaking, original, underrated, obscure, etc gets it nowhere near popularity. Gunstar Heroes, on the opposite, is often praised as the best genesis game by the non-genesis community (maybe because it was exclusive to this system and couldn't be easily replicated on others, and was damn good). That's popularity for me.

^totally true but i swear to god, whenever any retrospective - be it well researched like generation 16 or more casual footnotes, i hear Herzog Zwei given the nod for early RTS genius etc, even though at the time i recall hearing nothing about it at release & i could go back & dig but im pretty sure EGM/etc reviewed it low at the time as well. maybe it's an anomaly?

It sold less than the other Sonic games. It was outsold by Sonic 1, Sonic 2 and Sonic Spinball, then the Sonic craze whithered away, PROBABLY due to the below average quality of Spinball.

Plus Sonic 3 was released in March '94 for some reason only Sega of America's management knows about. It was meant to be a 24 Mbit game (pretty much what Sonic 3 & Knuckles eventually became) and to be released at Christmas 1994, that's what was planned by Sega of Japan and Sonic Team. (They even toyed with the idea of skipping SOA's Sonic 3 and release only Sonic 3 & Knuckles combined like planned.)

So while Sonic 3 was popular, it wasn't anywhere near as popular as it should and could have been, or as the previous games were.
