Wouldn't the cd version be better with audio or extras ? Yet everyone says the EJ 1 cart for genesis is classic. Which should I buy. Thoughts. Same for MK or S Showdown.

EWJ - having played & loved the cart, i don't see why the disc isn't the better one...didnt the art also bring another level or am i remembering shit wrong? either way, last i checked it wasn't one of the SCD games on the super-expensive side.
Sam Sho...ehh im still to this day saving up for an AES/MVS cause i don't like the ports elsewhere, as for MK though i'll say this: if you're talking part 1, neither are great.
1) genny one sounded like crap, looked about the same. it controlled far better than the SNES though so if it was between those two, sega every time.
2) however, while the sega CD version has the neat commercial intro and arcade soundtrack (though if i remember correctly, sometimes the wrong music was on the wrong stage?), the gamebreaker for me was the final battle with Shang Tsung: i swear, i recall loading every time he character switched, and it always felt like he loaded a frame or two faster than you did, meaning if he say turned into Raiden, he could psych cursh or whatever you call it before you could block. i could totally be remembering shit wrong so feel free to correct me people but i ended up really not liking it at all. Eternal Champions, on the other hand, actually ended up way better on Sega CD.
Thanks guys, I'll get the EWJ CD then. Agreed about EChampions ! Yes a Cart vs CD comparison would be cool. Yeah Takaras ports/carts and Crystal Dynamics ports/sega cds of NG games usually sucked. I'm glad sega did capcoms final fight though, capcom might have tried to pull a snes and left out guy.
It also has some extra sprites of animation here and there.
Ouch! hehe
Good idea, why not?
But, personally, I'd be more motivated to write an article on the Sega CD versions supremacy in general (though 80-90% of the time it would be about Sega CD vs Genesis) in terms of cross platform games. I wonder if Melf would like the idea and accept a lengthy article like that, though (I can make a brief, short comment about each game with relevant advantages on the Sega CD but it would still be a lengthy article).
Do it Barone, even though EC cart and EChampion CD is a no brainer. Nintendo busted their ass to try catch up to sega cd, a turd cd-i and infamous ps1 resulted, yes nintendo fanboys Nintendo was rushing to release a "snes add on" oh my.
Load Times.
Earthworm Jim S.E. was the first game which made me understand how badly load times can break the flow of a game.
I was accustomed to playing EWJ on SNES and Genesis, the game is action packed and fluid. On CD, load times completely broke the flow for me.
Off-topic but I don't understand what people like in Spider-Man SCD at all personally, absolutely horrible game (but not Web of Fire bad)
Earthworm Jim I usually go with SCD for those arranged tunes, could really use real hardware.
EWJ CD is definitely better. You can argue about which music has more charm or whether or not the loading times are tolerable, but it's still the most complete version. It even has a hidden path to skip that final Down the Tubes submarine segment, which can be borderline impossible, and a couple extra areas for some existing levels.
As for Mortal Kombat, the cart version is garbage and the CD version, while underwhelming, is still unfortunately the best console port of MK1 overall. There's no contest between that and the Genesis version (more samples, [some] arcade music, more animation, less slowdown, Sub-Zero gets his original stance back, etc.).
Every version of EWJ has a hidden air spout halfway through that gives you more air than you'd ever need. I actually made it through the tunnel legitimately for the first time ever maybe a year ago when I replayed the game.
Genesis EWJ is the baseline standard for the best version. Better controls and lots of little details like loose dirt falling with you when you slide down ramps. The SNES version had more colors and better backgrounds but everything was fatter to match the weird SNES res, the little touches are gone and it's missing Intestinal Distress.
The Sega CD game is based off the superior Genesis version and has some great CD music. The new Big Bruty level is alright, and the new weapons aren't all that great but you can switch weapons instead of having to blow your super ammo to get to the regular bullets. Price is a factor, too, since the game has blown the fuck up on the Sega CD. Unless you're a collector or a huge EWJ fan, I'd stick to the Genesis cart.
We should all ignore the GBC and GBA versions.
If anyone cares, EWJ 2 is better on the SNES and best on the Saturn.
I own both... buy the cart. EWJCD has some nice touches (added speech, new/expanded levels,) and is the definitive version but it isn't worth any wear near the asking price. As been mentioned the load times suck, when your used to playing the cart.
I will also add that I like the soundtracks equally, so much for the CD advantage.
Ok, I just spent an hour or so playing the Special Edition.
The load times aren't what I remembered them as. In comparison to later generation games, the load times are relatively brief.
What I'm reminded of now, and why the load times made such a negative impression on me, is that the jingle music that plays during the loading screen becomes annoying. Besides becoming repetitive, it also frequently doesn't jive with whatever the actual level music is at the time. More so than the actual load-time disrupting the flow of the game, it is the jingle music which takes me out of my groove.
Nonetheless, the extra polish and CD soundtrack are nice enhancements and the game is splendid all around, I think you just gotta get all three versions (SNES, GEN, SegaCD) and decide for yourself ;)
haha don't know how i missed this, but there we go! the biggest bummer for me in the Sega CD era was that the TRU around the corner had such a small selection, so id constantly look for Snatcher, more Working Designs stuff, EC etc and they'd just never be there. i at least got to pick up Rise of the Dragon for a song when they were liquidating their little stock...but soon after, a Best Buy opened up the next block over, and by then they didn't carry much of anything Sega =/
aw, man im a big fan - the animation & voice acting looks cheesy now but it was cool at the time. they not only added new villains, but a sort've proto open world game where you could stop crimes, collect comics etc (as long as you didn't run outta time), plus the over the top soundtrack (i wanna say Tallarico had a hand?), it's such a classic product of its era that when i play the genny one now im bummed out that spidey's not talking to me, haha.
I think the "special edition" is definitely the best, but if you're looking to buy, the difference in price is so extreme that it's hard not to recommend the cart.
On a related subject, is it worth getting the Saturn version of EWJ2?
Oh. I should read more carefully, I guess.
=3
The Saturn version has better backgrounds and better music, plus Saturn games are just cool. It does have loading times but every level gives you a password so you can continue from where you started.
Wow, there was an EU only PS version. I had no idea!
I'm glad from this thread, that we will finally get a Barone Cart vs CD article for Sega 16. Should be epic. And opinions will be split. I don't think price should be an issue, just how games are themselves. Price is no issue for me for EWJ, so I'm torn now what to buy after reading these posts. The spiderman and flashback cart vs cd debate will be epic.
It didn't make it over here because "3D is the future of video of video games, kids. The FUTURE!" <-- Said by every game company, and gaming media source in the mid 90s.:bang:
And just to stay on topic, the load times of the CD version aren't bad at all. Don't let them scare you from trying it out. I love some of the redone music.
Samurai Shodown is a prime comparison of cart versus (unoptimized) CD programming. Both have features not found in the other and both are different enough to justify owning both if you're a big SS fan.
CD version has great music and cutscenes that were removed from the cart, but much less animation and voice samples. It and Fatal Fury Special weren't done by Takara, they were published by JVC and developed by Funcom. Funcom didn't optimize anything, even the sprites are the same size as the MVS version.
Fun fact: SS was never released in Japan yet the language files are on the CD, if you redo the file structure you could theoretically play what would have been the Japanese Mega CD version.
If you're a big fan of EWJ get them all.
Said the guy that bought EWJ CD for $6 10 years ago.
I think special edition for sega cd is the better version of ewj, the new soundtrack is awesome the little extras in the game make it worth playing even if it's not a huge difference. the little intro animation at the title screen is pretty hilarious too.
I've owned the cart version since it was first released and it's still a good cheaper alternative if you don't want to spend a lot of money on the sega cd version, but if you want the extras and the great soundtrack then get the sega cd version. or get both at some point.
also keep in mind that special edition was also released on pc during the 90s and is much cheaper to buy then the sega cd version, but I don't know how you would get it to run on current computers.
EWJ special edition.
Hmm.... I must be dreaming.
The funny thing is a few months ago I was trawling Ebay sites for both FF Special and SS for MCD (J), since I wanted to get both together. I found one site that I thought had both as I believe I remembered clicking between them checking them out. This site was Japanese and only stocked NTSCJ stuff, that's what's throwing me.
I must be wrong, I certainly can't find a copy now!
