Coping with Nintendo fan boys/girls

Whats your guys trick? I have a ex/friend named katie who I hang out with from time to time. Her brother is dating this girl whos a super turbo Nintendo fan girl. She keeps trying to have game conversations with me to try and be cool, but shes really not. Shes so close minded about other systems it makes me wanna puke. The other day though, she had the audacity to say 'Other video game companies should just stop trying...I mean, nintendo is gonna be around forever, so they should just give up and make nintendo the only video game company...' I could handle her naiveness when it came to not knowing about Sega CD or 32X, I could even force my fist down from hitting her when she didnt know what a Turbo Grafx 16 or a Saturn was, and I bit thru my tounge when she said she'd never heard of an Atari 2600....but that Nintendo should be the only game company statement REALLY got my blood boiling.... I like all systems all games...granted the Nintendo libraries are always on the bottom of the totem pole, they're still on my list of systems that I own and play. People like her though, drive me insane..... Any of you guys/gals run into this sorta thing? -Ben

Nintendo should just stop trying. PC is going to be around forever, so they should just give up and make PC the only video game platform.

My trick: I moved away from the Nintendo hipster fad cult. Nah, that's not the reason I moved. I did live close to Redmond, WA where Nintendo of America is. The Nintendo cult is RAMPANT there. It is extremely difficult to escape it there. If you like any other video game companies, you are typically outnumbered by Nintendo fans, so there's no sense explaining why you like different companies. I avoid going to the local video game store in my area, because of the obnoxious Nintendo favoritism.

When a fan turns a blind eye to everything else, but Nintendo, they will never understand no matter how you talk to them. If they're much younger than you, it's easier. Especially if they're teenagers. For example, I've always been into arcade games. Some consoles have more arcade qualities than others. I told my Nintendo crazy cousin recently, "I lived in a different era when arcades were still popular. You couldn't possibly understand the appeal of these games or systems, because almost all arcades have ceased to exist. These consoles partly wanted to replicate the arcade experience, since you couldn't have it at home." Needless to say, he's exploring the SEGA Genesis now.

It helps to hang out with people who are intelligent enough to realize that many video game companies and systems from every era have something unique to offer. It's difficult to sway someone with unbreakable bias unless you're playing something that catches their eye.

How many Nintendo fanboys are there left though ? Its not 1993 anymore.

I am 100% guaranteed to run into this kind of gamer or the exact same except they grew up playing nothing but Sony. The two stores in town that have other consoles games have clerks that are either Nintendo or Sony fanboys, complete with ring tones. They know nothing about anything else, and their sections for Genesis, Turbo and Atari are always neglected. The one hardcore collector I know in town started out with Sega and TG16 like I did, and that is about it.

I had a younger friend come over once to play games, and while I could get him to play Streets of Rage with me, when I broke out unfamiliar stuff like Powerstone and Virtual On he got agitated and asked to play something "normal". That was a fun experiment that turned out exactly as I expected. At least he was open to try some new games. I let him indefinitely have my spare NES since his was fried so I could play it with his little brother when he comes into town.

I don't deal with this so much nowadays since virtually nobody around me in the real world knows anything about retro games. Since the ignorance is very much ubiquitous, I tend to not get my blood boiling.

However, I don run into the system war mentality every now and then when it comes to modern gaming. I somehow inadvertedly express my interest in gaming, and apparently that means to them I'm saying "bring on the system wars topic", because I'm suddenly drawn into this one-sided conversation about the awesomeness and superiority of this or that system over the other. It's never about the games themselves at heart; which I find moot.

Plenty, it isn't limited to people who grew up with it. The "Retro" fad building up over the last few years is incredibly biased towards Nintendo. The shirts/stickers/etc that are part of this, and help to "market" it outside of gaming itself are almost universally Nintendo franchises/characters (Mario, Zelda/Link, Samus, etc).

Honestly, it gets to the point where you just have to shrug and laugh it off. Like either they're joking, trying to get under your skin, or so damn stupid it's a miracle they have enough brain cells to remember to breathe.

I had to laugh. It got so downvoted(I think it was -11 at one point) it was taken off the main page, but I still wonder: Did people not get the joke, or was this guy really that dumb?

My friend at home is a major nintendrone. He wears the shirts, watches AVGN, and loves pokemon and mario and all that nonsense. It's gotten to the point that I avoid talking to him about games at all. But it's not like he only likes nintendo, he plays his PS3 and 360 all the time. It's only when I bring up sega that he shows no interest and completely tunes me out. Part of me can't blame him because he's only 21 and a SNES was his first system. OTOH I'm 22 and the SNES was my first system, but that didn't stop me from discovering and enjoying everything else. I remember around the time DKC Returns came out and he started talking about the original DKC and how great it was, and I told him exactly what I think of it. He just kind of put his fingers in his ears and went LALALALA!

Honestly i was a hardcore sega fan. And i would deny nins existence. But sega OD on us. So you choose what to play. And nin was my second choice.

I don't generally talk gaming with people in real life. As for the internet, all you can do with fanboys is call them out with facts if they spread misinformation (Nintendo fanboys love to rewrite history but not all of them are twisting things consciously; many are just repeating incorrect things they have heard) or try to explain the value in games they haven't played. You won't get through to most people but occasionally you'll find someone willing to expand his or her horizons.

Well those "types" support classic gaming, keeping it alive for the rest of us. Frankly there is just as much fun poked at SEGA fanboys, a company that essentially died 10 years ago, and yet we still have people waiting for a new console. Say what you will, but nobody does hand held gaming as well as Nintendo, and their 1st party games are still tremendously well done. Furthermore, some people confuse Nintendo fanboyism with vintage-ism if you will. People wear Nintendo vintage apparel because it's hip, not because they have a Nintendo system.

I don't really have to deal with those types, but why not talk each time about all the great games for Nintendo platforms that she likely has never heard of, which will likely be anything other than the most mainstream franchises. You can make her feel like a Nintendo n00b (which she is) anytime she tries to talk "gaming".
