I think Battletoads is a beat em up despite having racing parts and platforming. It's kind of similar to Double Dragon.
That being said, I voted Streets of Rage. Haven't played many Final Fights to put my thoughts into it. Same with Double Dragon. Battletoads is decent. TMNT was good in the arcades and the NES games of II and III. The SNES port of Turtles in Time is overrated. I felt Konami was a cookie cutter company when it came to beat-em-ups.
I vastly prefer FF arcade over any SoR, but compared to the SNES trilogy SoR is better, the SNES games are just too watered down.
All of those series had turds in them. Battletoads doesn't even belong, they had like 2 or 3 beatemup sections in each game.

No. They're not really. 2 or 3 levels doesn't make a game a beat em up. RCR/Kunio Kun/Renegade/Whatever had countless brawlers in the series.Quote:

The arcade game wasn't the first in the series. The first Battletoads was the NES/Genesis game, which maybe had 2 beat 'em stages, counting the first half of stage 3 and half of a later stage as a whole.
TMNT would pretty much be in the same area as Golden Axe, so judge that how you will, but they do have that multi-plane movement, and reliance on melee combat, while stopping you from moving forward until you beat all the enemies in the scene(to me, that last part is pretty important in trying to define the genre).
Aside from 3(and I'm guessing the most recent one), Splatterhouse would be questionable as well. I mean some of the really early stuff in the genre is on a single plane, so it's hard to say one way or another.
The second Spatterhouse has enough platforming too. It even got mentioned twice on the first page of my name you fave Genesis platform games.

Well you can fight your enemies in the bike segment of B&DD, so it's not much different than the bike segment of Bare Knuckle 3. Like I said before there is only 1 shooter level in each game, so it's kinda exaggerated to say they aren't beat 'em ups just because of one level.Quote:
