English and Mandarin Chinese, which i have been learning since grade 8.
As for chinese, i feel like at the moment i'm not too great, but if i went to china and was immersed in it everything i have learned in the past so-and-so years would just be UNLEASHED. know what i mean?
Portuguese , English e un poco di Italiano.
I only know English. My spanish sucks, and even though there are a ton of mexican people around here, I really don't plan on learning it much.
I'd LOVE to learn Italian, it's a really beautiful sounding language.
I can't speak Italian, but I took several Italian film classes back in college as I minored in Cinema Studies, and it's amazing how many names and common words that are shared by both English and Italian just sound so much more euphonious in Italian. The name that immediately comes to mind is Beatrice. Same spelling, but different pronunciation. In English, it's (Bee*uh*triss) and in Italian it's (Bay*uh*tree*chay) which I think sounds beautiful.Quote:

I managed a C in spanish class. I get a lot of hell from people for being spanish myself and not knowing the language, but it's all water off a duck's back to me :p

English and Portuguese, though my Portuguese is a bit rough (despite my parents being Portuguese immigrants to the USA and my first words spoken as a baby being in Portuguese). I can carry a conversation in Portuguese so long as the person I'm speaking with excuses my iffy grammar and thick American accent. :) I'm sure if I had some formal classes (never had any) in Portuguese I could clean up my rough spots, though.
I also speak passable French -- at least passable for a tourist, anyway.
I can also understand some Spanish if spoken slowly enough.
I did take a little Japanese, but basically I can only pick out the odd word here or there.
I'll be that guy who visits other countries with a laptop in hand and the screen on Google Translate.
Spanish and English in my case. Planning on taking German though.
No way I'll be messing with asian languages and their complicated ideograms.
I just started studying Swahili and enjoying the sound of that language so far. I ordered a little book on it and have learned some words and phrases, like "Ninafuraha kukutana na wewe" (Nice to meet you). Much prefer Swahili over Afrikaans because despite how widely spoken the latter is, Swahili is a much more genuinely African language. Same with Shona, which from what I remember is somewhat related.

If any of you guys wanna take the easiest route, learn Dutch. Its the closest major language to English and tons of vocabulary and sentences are strikingly similar.
I'm bilingual in English and Russian, thanks to my parents, and I have some relatives in Poland as well, but my Polish got sorta rusty, though in Ireland there's plenty of people to practise with. I had Spanish at school, which I really like - I still read literature in Spanish quite often, despite generally not using it other than that (it's not that common in Ireland, sadly). Also, knowing it helps immensely to understand written Portuguese, so there's that. I tried reading some bilingual Spanish/Portuguese books, and that helped contextualize everything. I've also been learning Japanese for some time, and it helps with some written Chinese, not surprisingly, but I wouldn't say I'm nearly as good at it as I am at the other languages, though I can translate from Japanese if there aren't too many idiomatic expressions/cultural stuff thrown in. I'm currently trying to work on my Mandarin a lot more, and I'd like to maybe learn French in the future, if time permits. Written French isn't too bad, but speaking is going to be a pain for sure. Dutch is also interesting, but I've never met a Dutch person who couldn't speak fluent English, same with Swedes, so I never had that much motivation to learn them. Lazy, I know, but that's just how it is. :D
