Sonic 1-3 vs Donkey Kong Country 1-3

First off you have to take Sonic 3 as is so no Sonic 3 + Sonic and Knuckles. My opinion is Sonic > DKC. DKC 2 vs Sonic 2 is a tie. and DKC 3 > Sonic 3. So I got it as 1-1-1. I fully expect to see some clean 3-0 sweeps for Sonic here. :)

My reasoning is that DKC is overrated and not that good so Sonic beats it easily. Now Sonic 2 and DKC 2 are both my favorite games in each trilogy so I went with the tie. It was too hard to pick 1 over the other. DKC 3 over Sonic 3 because Sonic 3 as is, is unfinished and DKC 3 is polished and complete.

pre-rendered graphics are horrible but impressive.

Sonic VS DKC is a 3-0 for me, the problem here being that Sonic 3D, Toy Story and other genesis pre-rendered efforts do not stand a chance against any DKC game.

2-1.

DKC > Sonic
Sonic 2 > DKC 2
Sonic 3 > DKC 3

The problem here is the DKC series didn't move enough, the sequels don't really better what DKC 1 already did and they just sorta seem unnecessary to me as a whole.

I never cared much for DKC3, so Sonic 3 wins by default. DKC2 is the best DKC, but still not enough to beat Sonic 2. DKC is crap, so Sonic 1 wins by default.

Wasn't there a long-winded thread pitting Vectorman against DKC?

Couldn't say, personally. DKC itself killed any interest I had in it's sequels.

Also, I consider Sonic 3 finished. It wasn't much of one, but it still had an ending after a good number of stages. S&K just makes an already great game epic.

Sonic 1 isn't sleep inducing, so it beats DKC1

Sonic 2 isn't sleep inducing and actually has appealing environments, so it beats DKC2

Sonic 3 isn't sleep inducing and doesn't star characters I hate, so it beats DKC3

3-0

i cant stand donkey kong especially not after the horrible smug gormless gob rare decided to saddle that damn dirty ape with

a horrible gob nintendo chooses to still use to this day

Ugh... I don't know... that's a hard one. I at least sort-of enjoyed Sonic Adventure back in 1999. Donkey Kong 64 was kind of painful for me.

I really dislike 3D platformers in general though.

Sonic Adventure > DK64 though Dreamcast being much more powerful than N64 does help a lot.

Well thats simply not true. DKC is like an unfinished game and the sequels are more like DKC on steroids and took everything to a whole new level. More levels, more enemies, more stuff to do.

I don't know about being better or worse, but i find Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 to be very good games, especially the second one. Generations was also very good.

sonic adventure was at least playable if you ignore the assinine story the horrid voice acting and the insane camera
there was some measure fo fun to be had

dk64 is competently made but its just so bland and boring you cant be arsed to play it
everything is by rote everything is bland and expected
and there are a million and one things to collect to improve "replayability "

Rare's collect-a-thon mentality is one of the big reasons I've never been a fan.

It was during the NES and SNES era. They didnt step up their game until the N64.

even the n64 games are over rated to me
the only genuinley good rare game on the n64 for me is goldeneye

It really was. It's easy to dismiss without playing it because of the perceived crass humor, but it's an excellent game that changes gears completely with new tasks and basically new rule sets to the world whenever there's even a hint of boredom on the horizon.

I'd say Banjo-Kazooie and Blast Corps still hold up today.

3-0 Sonic, easily. It's not that I dislike the DKC games, Sonic's just better. Now, if you compared them to the most contemporary Sonic games at the time of release? Well, DKC < Sonic 3 and/or S&K for sure. But I'd definitely put DKC2 over Knuckles Chaotix and DKC3 over Sonic 3D Blast.

And DK64 is garbage, IMO. I honestly can't even see how it's considered a good game at all.

Rare is very hit or miss for me, N64 or otherwise. I feel like a lot of their N64 games were given extra credit for whatever reason, perhaps the general lack of releases for the system. I actually think they're pretty much only overrated from DKC on through the N64 lifespan. Games like Battlemaniacs and Snake Rattle n Roll were not especially highly rated (and rightly so).

Sonic 1 puts me to sleep and has some pretty bad level themes. Marble Zone gets my vote for the worst second stage in the history of games. DKC isn't great, but it's at least better than Sonic 1.

Sonic 2 and DKC2... Man, tough choice, both are excellent games. I guess DKC2 has more playability, but Sonic 2 has a 2 player mode.

DKC3 and Sonic 3... Hmm, since Sonic 3 is without Knuckles in this thread, I give the vote to DKC3, absolutely excellent game, my favorite of the trilogy, though I do concur DKC2 is amazing.

I played DK64, I thought it was very fun. 55 hours later and I beat it, with everything collected. I wouldn't want to do it again anytime soon, but it was memorable.

I also tried Sonic Adventure 1, that game is horribly unpolished and terrible in many ways. Sonic Adventure 2 is much better.

The DK games are very good games, but the way Sega-16ers talk, you'd think they're some of the worst shit ever to make it to cartridge.

i find the sonic games grossly overhyped

but i will play the first two mostly for nostalgia's sake
i never had 3 or & knuckles untill recently so i have no attachment to those

i did like sonic adventure in 2000 but it doesnt hold up very well any more

if i am playing a platformer its usually one of the orginal spyro games on the ps 1 or alice madness retuns

Eh, they just don't move the formula enough. Sonic 2 is like the development team played Sonic 1, made a list of everything that went wrong and fixed it.

DKC2 and DKC3 are good games but they are just... more of DKC, really, I guess I just didn't need any more DKC in my life?

It may be nostalgia too as I first played DKC as a kid and DKC2 and DKC3 as an adult.

I like DKC, but find the other two to be pretty much more of the same, with less appealing characters. Sonic is good, Sonic 2 is great, and three is just kind of there.

Sometimes I feel like everyone played a different Sonic Adventure 2 than I did. Was it a million times better on Gamecube or something? Because I absolutely abhor that game.

OP, I don't understand the comparison at all. Sonic was Sega's answer to Mario. Nintendo didn't even reboot Donkey Kong until around the Sonic 3 release. This thread makes no logical sense to me. Sure the games were both platformers, but other than that I don't see the comparison.

Are you conceding that Sonic can't compete with Mario, so you are comparing his games to those of Nintendo's 2nd tier platformer series instead?
