Ps4 bombing horribly in japan?

So it seems places have been hinting on the ps4 bombing in japan. What i'm wondering is how the **** is this possible? Sony has been doing an excellent job around the world, creating an incredible hype machine spread through great word of mouth through the world, but yet it didn't reach japan? I've watched the launch stream and it was laughable, why wasn't the launch as great as it was in other countries like UK? Did sony decide that it wouldn't help?

Anyway I get the title is a bit premature which is why I put a question mark just in case. Title can change once we know more. Anyone got an idea of why the japanese are looking to have no interest in ps4?

No idea, have not seen any solid numbers, and I'd give it a week to get them sorted out... but if true, I'd say there just isn't much interest there for it. Maybe they are far more interested in mobile this gen than anything else.

But if the PS4 isn't doing well, then the xbone launch is going to be utterly laughable there.

Playstation has a much stronger footing that XBox over there so I agree with the above statement. Don't rule out the strength of Ninty over there too. I don't any figures, but I should think the Wii-U is fairing better there than it is in the West. And 3DS is massive out there. When I last visited every kid I saw seemed to have one, it was quite surreal.

But the trend towards mobile gaming over there is big and I wouldn't be surprised if consoles are just considered outdated...

I think the Japanese are moving away from consoles. It makes sense, as space is pretty much at a premium in Japanese homes, so the less clutter, the better. Also, many Japanese spend a significant portion of their time on trains. Portables address both problems. I think portables have become powerful enough to satisfy the Japanese gaming tastes. They don't seem obsessed with high end graphics as much as the US and Europe (and at the moment, the PS4 and Xbox One only offer better graphics, with no new games that really differentiate themselves from the current gen of gaming outside of better visuals).

The Wii U is selling poorly there. The best selling console is the PS3 (prior to PS4 release anyway). The top two systems sold in Japan? The 3DS (naturally) and the Vita (seriously). They love their handhelds.

The PS4 may end up doing fine in Japan, but the Japanese may be more likely to wait for worthy games to make them upgrade than their eager, western counterparts.

Don't forget the PS4 in the grand scheme is only part of the "Playstation Ecosystem" or whatever they're calling it. The majority of Sony's back catalogue is going onto a subscription streaming service available on most computing devices from PCs to phones. The PS4 may bomb in Japan, but Sony will still be making plenty of money ;).

To my knowledge no solid numbers have been revealed, and we wont have any until the MediaCreate numbers come in, so just wait a few days. Didn't it just launch yesterday?

This. Portables have ruled the market over there since the PSP and DS.

There's a reason why console game design is trending towards a more western style and why lots of popular IPs are being outsourced to western developers.

I think more importantly than the PS4 making a big splash or bombing in Japan is that Japan is not really as relevant as it used to be with respect to a console's success. I think the Xbox 360 illustrates this well. This article seems to hit the nail on the head:

I can still see Nintendo going into Panic mode to do something about that though. Xbox One looks to be in a really bad spot right now if you ask me. It's NPD drop from December to January was the same percentage as the Wii U last year. Considering there was no shortage like the PS4 that's not looking good. And even with a shortage the PS4 still sold more. When you consider that the Xbox division is pretty much a waste of money in the most literal sense for Microsoft I'd say if anyone drops out of consoles it's going to be them.

I dunno. The Xbone sales numbers were not up as much as PS4 was of course, but they were available in less regions (keeping them stocked better). That + the price point has left them trailing Sony for certain.

But at the same time, it's not exactly selling piss poor, but we would need to see current numbers... which MS will be a bit shy about unless they actually are higher than Sony's at some point (not likely).

Both units still look to catch, then pass, the wii u's total sales within this year. Obviously Sony will do so sooner, and MS could take a huge nose dive and miss it. But that's not exactly looking likely just yet.

The new MS head could certainly shake things up big time either way as well. And I'm sure that uncertainty hasn't helped with pushing the system either, and depending on what happens, it could be with good reason.

Xbox One is in a bad spot, yet it's just an Azure box and the new CEO is the big shot behind that whole company shift. They can afford to keep it going. Microsoft isn't going to kill the trojan horse that get's their cloud platform in the living room. They're spending money on games again. I wouldn't buy a bone, I wouldn't count them out at all.

Nintendo won't be dead, but it won't save the Wii U. They don't have the money necessary to pay for that miracle.

Life in Japan might be something really weird these days.

Here's the January 2014 numbers for you:

PS4: ~271k
XBone: ~141k
PS3:~54k
Wii U: ~49K
360: ~48k

Retail Software sales are also down 26% YOY in general for the entire industry. However the Wii U saw a 26% increase in software sales and the 3DS saw a 6% increase in software sales.

And that's just for the US, so other regions aren't even involved here. When we look at percentages the drop off for the Xbox One from the holidays to January was about 85%. That's the about the same as the Wii U during it's first January. The Xbox One's first January sales are lower than the first January sales for the PS4, the PS3, the Wii, the 360, and the PS2. It's only higher than the Gamecube, Xbox, and Wii U. Pretty much everything is down when we look back at historic data, but even then the Xbox One is doing really bad for a console that just launched with no supply problems. While it's still higher than the Wii U, I would not be surprised if we see it slip lower come March when February's NPD data is released.

Neither system has a real "killer app" right now, and because of that Sony is crushing MS with the price point. The slightly better PS4 specs combined with the general "PS4 is more powerful" rhetoric from the constant native resolution comparisons coming out are likely not helping either.

I'll be interested to see if Titanfall makes a major impact on sales or not.

If it doesn't, then MS is still waiting on something to really pick up interest like Halo and Gears did back for the Xbox and 360.

Sony can currently just ride the wave and keep doing what they are doing if they want, but hopefully they are keeping a keen eye.

Being lazy and letting the competition catch up is one of the reasons the PS3 caught up the 360's lead last gen after all.

Unless something dramatic happens I see the Xbox One following the same path as the Wii U, just not quite as fast.

It's been known to be more powerful since before either was released. But the differences are not "OMG" differences. Most of them have required reviewers taking screen shots of specific sections to highlight the difference between the two... very few consumers would ever be in a position to notice it.

The only reason I put it as a "narrative" is because it's being touted as a much bigger deal than it is. Some people make it sound like the Xbone is closer to the wii-u than the PS4 when the reality is they are so close to each other as to be only marginally different.

What IS noticeable however is the price tag. And like I made note of some time ago, the Kinect is going to be something that MS is either going to need to find a way to sell people on, or they are going to likely be forced to remove it and make a "core" SKU.

Unless they want to eat that cost. But I don't see them wanting to do that any more than Nintendo wants to eat the cost of the gamepad.

If Titanfall doesn't move systems like they hope, I think MS will be re-evaluating a number of things for next Christmas, if not before.

There are always investors begging Microsoft to give up diverse brands and markets, to focus on the safe, profitable enterprise products they are good at.

Microsoft's Xbox was always just a drop in the bucket. It's a disposable pipe dream to crush Sony and dominate home entertainment. It's far from pathetic, and the whole thing was redesigned to be integrated with their Azure platform, for better or worse in the short term. I would really like to know what's uniquely pathetic about Xbox, aside from some obtuse disregard for it as a loss leading brand.

Xbox shutting down is so fucking radical, stupid and unlikely to even conceive of outside of the dramatic shit heap of game journalism circlejerks, that you could also say they might just buyout and assimilate Nintendo into their infrastructure, just because it would give them a platform in Japan and also destroy a lot of hope for Sony.

Its not quite a good example as the game was made by 2 different developers and Nixxes showed with the DC version of Soul Reaver that they love 60 fps with their updates . No question the PS4 has the edge in the GPU dept but the XBox 1 isn't that far behind

MS made money on the XBox 360 and in not for the TROD and the billion in cost them they would have made even more the likes of LIVE and the XBLA transactions are a huge cash cow for MS. MS aren't going to drop the XBox any time soon more so with PC sales on the decline and MS facing huge competition to the likes of google and so on. Sony lost a ton on the PS3 in the early years and I doubt Vita going to make them much money but the console sector is too important to both for them to drop .

Since it was brought up, I am wondering why someone doesn't just buyout Nintendo?

I think any company making games would LOVE to be able to get instant access to Nintendo's IP. But they are still worth a fair amount, and they are not exactly open to the prospect. Mounting a hostile takeover would likely see most of the talent leave the company in the process.

I'm sure even in an amicable takeover plenty would leave or take the opportunity to simply retire anyways.

Either way, it's not seen as worth it. When MS was looking at it, they had the money but it would have just cost entirely too much. That is still the case today as well.

If Nintendo continues to devalue and lose money in the future however... well, then that would have to be seen.


Personally, as much as I want them to either get back int he game with real hardware, or just go 3rd party... I don't want to see them be just another part of some other company. Part of Sega's problems is that they are no longer really "Sega". They are the name, but the culture that lead to their success (and problems) is not the same. I am fairly sure the same would happen to Nintendo before too long if they were folded into another company.

I wonder if it's because of all the great launch games that totally revolutionize the way we think of gaming, like Knack and Killzone and... oh wait.

Getting a system day one when there isn't anything absolutely amazing on it is dumb. I'll stick to my PC which is still getting new releases, and I have like, 200-300 games due to Steam sales :D

I'd rather have a 3DO than a PS4 or Xbox One right now.

It's not the GPU, it's the memory. The PS4 has significantly faster memory than the Xbox One, and that is what's making such a huge difference here. I'd say Tomb Raider is a fair comparison. It shows us exactly what the gap is on both consoles when they are doing the exact same graphical effects at the same resolution.

They only made money on it 4-5 years after it released. And even then it's still not a significant amount compared to the rest of their income. The point is that if any of the three console makers are likely to drop out of the market, it's Microsoft. For most of the time they've been in it it's done nothing but lose money for them. And when it has been profitable, it hasn't really produced that much profit for them. That doesn't mean I think it's going to happen any time soon, it's just a sobering fact to bring up.

I'd say the reverse is more likely to be a problem. The XBone and PS4 have almost the same GPU, but the PS4's opted for a bit beefier specs.
The RAM issue between the two is certainly not minor, but the additional SRAM in the Xbone is something that will require devs to tweak to really get the most out of.

If that isn't factored around to try and get the most out of it, then both systems are going to be almost identical, with the PS4 having a bit beefier GPU and much faster RAM.

The RAM can be tweaked and worked with via SRAM so long as the developer knows how to make use of it. The GPU there's nothing they can do... It's just a slightly less capable version of what's in the PS4. They can certainly work around it to mask that... which I think is exactly what the slightly lower native resolution for most games are doing. They sacrifice a bit of native resolution, letting it upscale it, in order to keep a solid performance standard.

Keep in mind that the ps4 has only just launched and it often takes a while for a system to get major attention and usually takes the release of a few groundbreaking games which usually also take some time to be released. When was the last time any console has had anything majorly important come out alongside release, certainly not the 3DS and that is huge in japan.

Which is why I'm saying it's stupid to buy a console day one, unless there's a game like Super Mario 64 that totally revolutionizes.
