Phantasy Star 3 is the best one according to me, the generation system is great, I had never seen that before in a RPG.
The opening theme is memorable and stand in your head for a long time. The replay value is also more interesting.
I do hear a lot of hate for PS III. Its a shame, because I think its a pretty good game, myself.
I like Phantasy Star III, but not nearly as much as I like PSIV. Still, I do enjoy the game. The generation system was a really nice idea, the combat was much faster paced than in PSII (though too easy), and the music was excellent. I like the use of colors in some of the zones, along with some of the look of most of the characters. The game could have benefited from a bit of side quests and more dialog between characters, but I can see how budget/time and the generation system would make that more difficult at the time. It would have been great to see the backs of your characters in battle, as with so many of the games in the series, but I've played far more primitive RPGs, and it's not that big a deal to me.
I'll cast a vote for Eternal Champions.
I haven't played Phantasy Star III in ages but I quite enjoyed it at the time. I didn't know it was hated by many until later on. Magazine reviews were quite positive. I remember Gamefan bashing it but that was a few years after it came out.
A lot of people really dislike Subterrania. While it's definitely way too hard, I still find myself coming back to try and beat it at least once a week. I really like the music and graphics, except the boss designs, which suck. The physics that some people complain about are actually pretty neat, and it's cool that picking up objects changes your ship's falling acceleration, among other things.
Heard this via "Happy Console Gamer", apparently there's a lot of hate for Burning Fight for the Neo Geo. Gave it a go today and while it's nothing particularly special, I don't see anything worth hating it over. Guess it's just Final Fight fans going apeshit over nothing
Ecco the Dolphin and Ecco the Dolphin: The Tides of Time are the first to come to my mind - the game play was intuitive, the graphical schemes were always very nice, especially the CD re-installments as they provided a great ambient backdrop which complimented the eerie tone of the story perfectly...
But, for whatever reason... it's just.... I absolutely hate playing Ecco the Dolphin games. I think that they are good games but not for me.
Eternal Champions is a good choice. Half the people here seem to love it, and the other half realize that as a fighting game, as in compared to other fighters of the time, the movesets are brokenly unbalanced/and or redundant. There is literally no point to using some characters moves over others. That's why it gets the hate it does, that and the fact it was hyped as a SF killer at the time, which as we found out on release day it most certainly is nothing of the sort.
The game having difficult/cheap AI doesn't even come into it, it's a versus fighting game so is judged on how balanced characters are in bouts between human players.
A shame, since it gets good few things right as well in terms of sprites, physics, hit FX etc.
I really like Eternal Champions on Sega CD, except for the difficulty and most of the ways you perform your specials. Nice concept and some interesting characters. One day, I'll actually play a 2 player game of it and stop regretting my purchase.
My vote goes to Hard Drivin'. I just really liked this port when it first came out, and I still enjoy playing it today. Although the framerate suffers badly, the Genesis captures the look and feel of what was a pretty advanced arcade game (for the time).
I've always been mystified by the near-universal disdain directed at Asterix and the Great Rescue. I thought it was a reasonably fun platformer with great music and pretty good stage design (until the devs phoned it in at the end). I guess people can't accept the short range of Asterix's attack, but it's not like it's an oversight. The whole game is designed around letting the enemies come to you before you attack -- it even says so in the manual -- and I had no problem adapting to it.
I also think Jewel Master and Super Hydlide are among the better Genesis titles in their respective genres (action-platformer and RPG), but some folks vehemently disagree.
Phantasy Star III has the best music of any and all Phantasy Star games. It is also unique in setting a mood; knowing exactly how to tell an immense story arc in the shortest amount of time for any RPG. It is one of my favorite RPGs overall, and though PSII is my favorite overall, it is hard for me to place another atop PSIII (perhaps only equate them to it).

I feel the controls are just perfect. One just needs to learn them, that is all. It is a very satisfying game that is ubiquitously hated.
I enjoyed Zoom!. I found it addictive even. It reminded me of old games like Qix and Pepper II. I guess that kind of gameplay is a bit outdated for the Genesis era, but I still enjoyed it. And anyway, Ultimate Qix doesn't get that kind of hate.
I didn't know that game was hated. I thought it was a perfectly fine action platformer. I liked it more than the SMS Asterix game, which gets its share of praise.
I gotta go for Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle 3. Granted most of the hate around here is directed at the localization, but quite a few people trash the original game too.
As much as I prefer BK3 and agree with the criticisms of the arbitrary changes made to it, if we somehow we lived in a world where SoR3 was the only version of the game that existed, it'd still be a beastly beat-em-up and one of my favorites.
I think outrunners is one of the most hated game, since it shares very little compared to the arcade version, and it forces you to play split screen all the time.
While it's not the greatest port, the game, picked alone as it is, is very fun especially when played with a friend. Also, unlocking Virtua Formula is a nice challenge.
I loved PSIII! I played it before II but after the SMS original. I never understood the hate. It was one of the first RPGs I ever played and I have really great memories of it.
I never liked Eternal Champions and never understood why it has such a fan base. It just never did it for me and it still doesn't. I was never sure if the most important things were improved in the MEGA-CD version, such as animation frames. I looked at a gameplay video a week or two ago, and it didn't even have speech. I can't remember if that is right or not. If it is, that's just pathetic.
One thing I could never understand is why the PC Engine's Super CD system with is tiny 2mbit memory, had fighting games that murdered any of the very few MCD fighters with its 6mbit cache in terms of sprite animation and overall graphics. Advanced V.G and Askua 100% are good examples. That "Burning Fists" game was a bit of a joke in both areas and that was made 1994!
I grew up playing the original a lot with my cousin via the Sega 6-Pak cart. But after playing Streets Of Rage Remake and Bare Knuckle III, I really can't go back to SOR 1. There's just so much that was improved over time with the sequels that it's almost kind of back to taking baby steps
It was good for what it was and still is, but it's pretty archaic these days

It's Generations Lost, but it seems more a case of underrated than hated.
I cleared it and found it one of the best Genesis games, but people just doesn't seem to like it. Or like it enough.
I did not enjoy Star Odyssey / Blu Almanac very much at all. Reminded me of the old Ultima RPG
This might just be me, but I'd have to say Sword of Vermillion, if only for the nostalgia of being the first RPG I ever beat. That said, if someone else doesn't think it's good, I'm not going to argue with them. That game did have its fair share of problems.
A lot of the time "hate" requires that some kind of "trust" be broken. If you don't really have an expectation of something, there's no reason to hate that thing. Most games that are "hated", are so because they were hyped and the person got disappointed, or they belonged to a series that they pretty much "shat" on (not necessarily by being bad, but by not following expectations, GA 3 is a great example, Thief made a great point in his latest post in the GA 3 thread, his expectations were different).
Truly bad games aren't hated, they're either mocked or ignored. Why is Chakan "hated"? Because it had massive potential, and anyone who plays it can see it. It's the disappointment that causes the hate.
SCiFi , I am saying many people liked Ultima but not me, and i see the same thing happening with Blue Almanac, i do not enjoy the way its programmed, i WANT to like it but was so let down by the final outcome.
So yes it may be a good game, but i cannot enjoy it.
Yeah. It's true that the game has gotten hate. And probably because of the way the game is built. It does have a very unique leveling system that gets people frustrated.
In fact, I'm having trouble recalling who else other than myself truly loved this title.
If you look at games that routinely get called the worst or most hated on any platform, generally it's terrible shovelware games or games that had zero potential straight out of the starting gate, it's rarer for games like Chakan to come along where as you said, the hate is generally due to the fact that it really could be one of the best games on the Genesis.
Someone should fix the awkward stiff control and speed, and remove the stupid limit on the boss fight, then Chakan would be an awesome game. Excellent music too.
PS3 had a butchered translation into english. The japanese version actually makes more sense storywise. Don't know what the hell happened with that one.
I'd say Rings of Power. It is among the most open-ended 2D RPGs of its generation, but it could've used better graphics, less repetitive dialogue, etc. but of course there were hardware limitations, the worst IMHO being the slowdown. I e-mailed Andy Gavin, one of the creators about it and he said there was an Amiga and PC version which ran really nice. Too bad we'll probably never see it. :\
Trampoline Terror is also widely panned but I found it very addictive.
^Seriously, with all the ROM hackers slaving away at endless level hacks of mario and megaman , im sure someone can clean up Chakan a bit and make it a marvelous masterpiece it should have been!
as a stand-alone or title of a different name, it'dve held up way better, i think. moreso than Sword of Vermillion anyway.
but it dropped the aesthetic and so much of PS that it felt like a huge step back, plus there wasn't much variation in the generations as you played through to all endings, honestly.
vanilla or CD? i dug it the genny one in the day but haven't honestly revisited it in forever.
Sub actually gets love in the SHMUP scene, i wanna say, but i think it's natural it takes some slack for such a unique control scheme, honestly.

funny, i just rebought Super Hydlide, and keep passing on Jewel Master on the cheap but i do intend to get it, for some reason it looks like kenseiden/lord of the sword-y to me, never did play it though.
Naah, Starflight seems like the classic example of a game that everyone praises and very few people actually play. :D It's been on my need-to-play list for, what, five years now?
Both games have subpar graphics (Super Hydlide moreso) but very strong music, especially Jewel Master which is along the lines of Galaxy Force II and other prog-jazz Sega soundtracks of the era.
I know that Joe R. doesn't like Jewel Master much, but I thought it had great flow/stage design and controlled very well. It reminded me a lot of the best 8-bit action-platformers, in a good way.
oh man, does your Starflight copy include the star map? i used that thing so much beating that game, i swear i had practically the whole universe mapped out for shortcut worm holes, even marked off uhlek territory! god id play it again if i still had that map of mine.
That's actually one reason I didn't touch it for years, because it didn't have the map. I was kind of pissed, actually, that the usually-reliable guy I bought it from billed it as "complete", and when I asked about it he just pointed me to a URL with a scan of the map!
But last year I picked up a second, complete copy at a yard sale that did include the map. :) Only cost me about $4, or at least I bought it in a lot of 5 CIB Genesis games for $20, which was a steal.

Agreed! I really liked that game! I bought it around the same time as PSII&III. Because of my obsessive quest to buy Lunar, I started buying any MD RPG I could find. Stupid UK mags such as Mean Machines always trashed RPGs (they gave Lunar 83% and trashed it, even though they only played up to the boss in the sewers!) so I was turned off them. Not so much by their opinion, but by that opinion AND the fact that when I bought my MD in June '91, PSII was $140 here. Hell, I paid $120 for Wonderboy in Monster World (looooved that game). Well not me actually, I got it for my birthday :D
I would be mega-surprised if there was a person out there that did not hate any game with the name "RazorSoft" on the front. Ugh! Such crap!!
