Why would you feel insulted? He said that's the game he picked up the system for, not that it was the only game on the system worth playing.

I bought a Saturn for NiGHTS and a Sega CD for Sonic CD. There were other games I wanted to play on them too, of course, but they were the system sellers, for lack of a better term. Second-hand, though. My brother and I did get a Nintendo 64 and Super Mario 64 for Christmas in '96, and although I didn't actually pay for that I should think it counts.

The only one I can think of is I bought a PS3 so I could play Katamari Forever.

What amazes the absolute piss out of me is how many people only remember Enter The Gecko and how no one remembers the original 2D, Pre-Rendered Platformer that spawned the franchise

My brother already had a Mega Drive and a Master System, so saved up and bought a SNES, just so I could play Street Fighter 2 Turbo.

I like threads like these, sometimes they help me remember why in the hell I care about games. I usually can't say what my "favorite" games are, but I can remember when I bought a console for a specific game or games and what kept me coming back for more. So I'll list only games that I have owned, or played extensively and still enjoy and would collect today, after buying the console.

During their lifespan:

Master System: After Burner
What made me stay for 2 years and come back after Y2K: R-Type, Golvellius, Zillion, Shinobi, Space Harrier, Quartet, Enduro Racer, Safari Hunt, Marksman Shooting & Trap Shooting.

What made me stay: Nothing, but I tried Golden Eye, F-Zero X, Perfect Dark, Mario 64, Zelda 64, Zelda Majora's Mask, Castlevania Legacy of Darkness, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Blast Corps, all of the San Francisco games, and others I can't think of right now before trading it for some games or something. I have an N64 hooked up today with an Everdrive 64 in it and a complete World Driver Championship that I haven't played yet.

The only console I ever bought because of one game was the Super Nintendo, well kind of. I am a huge SEGA Fanboy and back then could never imagine owning a console of the enemy. Until that damn game called Street Fighter II was released. Then I HAD to buy it. There many other games I wanted before SFII came about though; Chou Makaimura, Contra Spirits, Final Fight, Akumajou Dracula etc.

I bought every system after that, I bought them because they were a new console, not because if *a* game. Although, I bought my PS2 when VF4 and MGS2 were released so I guess that could count.

I bought a PSP not long after it was released in Japan but it was the Landstalker remake that really made me want it and get excited for the system.... BASTARDS!

The only console I can think of purchasing to play a specific game was a Wii to play Guitar Hero III. I went with the Wii as cheaper than the PS3 or XBOX360.

Unless you count purchasing my first SNES recently as I had pre-ordered Nighmare Busters and wanted to play it.

Genesis: My sister asked for it before I could make executive influences in my family. I merely enjoyed the ride.
NES: Dad had it before I was born.
Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Saga- It would be 8 years after owning a Saturn before getting PDS.
Gamegear: Streets of Rage 2
Master System: Phantasy Star
PS1: Again my sister brought it home.
Dreamcast: Blue Stinger- I saw a demo playing at a kiosk, I had to play that badass game. It was less badass than expected, but still very good.

The rest were bought to add to the collection with no particular game attracting me to them.

I was in the dilemma between Gamecube and PS2. But the ability to play multiplayer with four friends convinced me. Games like Super Smah, Star Fox Command, Medal of Honor Frontline, F-Zero, Zelda four swords *, Mario Party, Mario Kart, etc.. That and Twilight Princess of course.

The truth few were the times that manages to gather four friends, with the desire to play something. Usually played Mario Party with my sisters. Eventually, I regretted. I change the Gamecube to a friend, for the PS2 just for the chance to play Shadow of the Colossus and Okami. The two games that I liked most in life.

* I Got Zelda four Swords knowing it was multiplayer. The problem is, I did not know I had to get three Gameboy Advances to play. What an idiot.

For SCD it was Sonic CD. I had a Genesis back in the 90s with some games so no particular game that made me buy it.
For PS2 and 3 the Gran Turismo series as I'm a fan of driving simulation games.

I have bought only two consoles because of one particular game I wanted to play. First, I bought the Nintendo 64 to play WCW/NWO Revenge. I was a big wrestling fan at the time, and since all the good wrestling games were coming out for that system I worked a morning paper route in the dead of winter to save up for a used machine. It was worth it. Pretty soon I had No Mercy, Attitude, War Zone, WrestleMania 2000, and Backstage Assault as well. Looking back, I don't think I bought any N64 game that wasn't wrestling.

The second time, I bought a PlayStation 2 to play Xenosaga Episode I. The previews I saw for it were just amazing, and the game didn't disappoint. Along with a refurbished machine and the game, I got a magazine subscription that plugged me into the whole sixth-gen scene. Very interesting. :)

I had a PS3 earlier at my parents home (it was my younger brothers PS3), but when GTA V came out I just had to buy PS3 for myself. It was an absolute system buyer.

Master System: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, first console game I played on my life on my uncle's house, back in 1990. There's also Hang On and Safari Hunt on the memory, but the two were more like simple arcade games.
Mega Drive: DecapAttack
Sega CD: Night Trap and Sonic CD
32X: Chaotix and Doom, one because is a Sonic game and the other because I used to play it on the same uncle's PC.
Saturn: Virtua Fighter 2
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure and Marvel vs Capcom 2
Game Boy: Pokemon (oddly enough, I never played a Pokemon game on my GB, just emulators :P)

I bought a Dreamcast just off playing Soul calibur at a friend's house, without doing one bit of research on the system.

ZombiU played a big part in my decision to buy a Wii U. I've always been a fan of horror games and everything I had seen and read about ZombiU made me really want to play it. And I'm glad I did - it's a tense, challenging and atmospheric survival horror with some great online aspects.

That is pretty much the reason I don't get systems right away yet. The once definitive "there will be games you like" still holds true, but if there are not a good number of launch games I enjoy (hasn't happened since the DC), it could be a few months, or even a year + until there is.

At that point I don't need to worry about launch day lines, product availability issues, etc.

i tend to wait untill the price has dropped and there is a somewhat robust library in place
last time i was an early adopter was with the xbox 360 and it wasnt much fun

the wii U really is a non issue for me after 15 months on the market there is very little on it that appeals to me
im tired of the endless mario games
if i want to play them i can get them much cheaper on the cube or wii and get the same basic game play

I bought the Xbox 360 in 2008 for Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts. What an absolute letdown that turned out to be, it wasn't even close to as good as either of the Nintendo 64 Banjo-Kazooie games.

Nowadays that Xbox 360 is mostly a DVD player and I also put pirated movies on a USB stick and watch them using the 360.

Atari 2600= Pitfall- I didn't buy one. My dad picked one up from a garage sale when I was younger as a surprise. But if there was a game that made it worth owning back then, it was Pitfall.

Atari XE= Mario Bros.- I actually wanted an Atari 7800 for Christmas so I could play Xevious. I got this instead, because the guy at the counter told my parents that it could play 7800 games. But the game that eventually made me glad to have this system, was Mario Bros. It plays just like the arcade, but they changed the art style quite a bit. However, the art style is nice, with rather fluid animation. In fact, in some ways, I prefer it to the arcade's look. Sure, there were other games I enjoyed before it (Star Raiders II, Rescue on Fractalus, Ball Blazer, Archon, etc.), and some games from the Atari 400/800 era too (Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., Defender, Pac-Man, etc.). But Mario Bros. was the one that made the initial disappointment that came that Christmas morning, disappear completely.

Oh, and the guy at that Toys R Us probably got confused. It can play Atari 800 (and 400) games, but not Atari 7800 ones. 800, 7800... yeah. That, or my parents only heard the 800 part, and ran with it. And no, I still don't own a 7800 :(

SEGA Master System= Phantasy Star- Come on, this RPG was great, with cool 3-D dungeons, a mix of sci-fi and medieval traits, and some nice tunes. It was one of the main reasons to own the system, and one of the first games I bought for it (along with R-Type and Shinobi) after I bought a friend's system.

SEGA Genesis= Ghouls 'N Ghosts- A great action platformer, with wonderful music and a serious challenge. I loved the first game in the series, and seeing that its sequel was hitting the Genesis made me want to get it. I might have said Thunder Force II for this, but I discovered that title was good by accident.

SEGA-CD= Final Fight CD- It wasn't out yet when I got the system, but it was the game I wanted the most.

SEGA 32X= Shadow Squadron- 3-D "go anywhere" space sim, lighting effects, and blowing shit up? My body was ready, and so I grabbed the system for cheap when K-Mart was trying to get rid of them. Although, Doom was a close second to be honest.

SEGA Saturn= Darius Gaiden- I bought this game two weeks before I bought my Saturn used off of a friend. Yeah, I wanted it that much. It was on sale for $15 at a local Target, and I love the Darius series.

Dreamcast= Soul Calibur- Gorgeous graphics, solid gameplay, lots of characters to choose from, multiple modes... it's what sold a lot of systems, I'm sure. It's also what got me standing at my local EB at 7 A.M. for the system's launch.

Nintendo Entertainment System= Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse-The system was looooong since dead by the time I got one. At flea market, I found a booth that had several NES systems for sale, and quite a few games. I'd wanted to own one for a while, but I just couldn't convince myself to get one. That day however, I said to myself that if they had all three Castlevania games, I'd get it. They did, and I did. The three Ninja Gaiden games followed suit a short time later (as in, a couple of minutes later).

Super Nintendo= Demon's Crest- Yeah, the two Castlevania games were a close second, but this Capcom game is what pushed me to finally pick up this system from a K-Mart that was closing its doors. Nice music, great graphics, fun gameplay... good stuff.

Nintendo 64- Star Fox 64- I don't own much of a library for this system, but Star Fox 64 was the reason I eventually picked up a used one.

Sony Playstation= Raiden Project- Two great shmups, one disc. I was solid on it, and thankfully, the Funcoland I bought the used system from had a disc-only copy of the game for me to grab. I eventually got a complete copy of the game years later at a flea market.

Sony Playstation 2= Castlevania: Lament of Innocence- Not a great game, but not a bad one either. Better than the N64 3-D outings, that's for sure. I grabbed it new with my used PS2.

Microsoft XBox= Halo- Yeah yeah... be quiet. It looked cool, and I wanted to play it. So, I picked it up with my used XBox.

GameBoy Advance= Castlevania: Circle of the Moon- A darkly colored game, but it was a great entry for the system, and the reason I grabbed a used GBA.

2600/VCS: (when I bought a new one years after my old one died on me): Astroblast
NES: Super Mario Bros.
SMS: Shinobi
7800: Food Fight
TurboDuo: Gate of Thunder (CD), Bonk's Revenge (card/chip)

I just asked for a Nintendo DS one year for Christmas and got one. I was old enough at that point that I bought a game for it. I thought it was Sonic Rush, not realizing it was the second one Sonic Rush Adventure. I got it's soundtrack later that year (bought it myself online from Japan). LOL And then the soundtrack to the first one (also bought it myself online from Japan), even though I have yet to buy the first and play it.

Ones I bought myself 20 years later:
SEGA 32X: Knuckles Chaotix (played it a lot on emulators and wanted to actually own the game).

Ha, I'd forgotten about that! It was assumed or wished by many a kid that Sega cards and Turbo cards were interchangeable.

Between the Genesis and the TG16, I was stuck debating for weeks as to how to spend my money.
Finally one store had both systems on display, and while Blazing Lasers certainly piqued my interest, I was thoroughly disinterested with Keith Courage. Altered Beast was cool and all but it didn't really sell me on the Genesis. It was the lameness of Keith Courage which sold me on the Genesis.
