Youtube VG fans who think the Genesis is one of the, if not thee, best console ever ! Few and far in between but :

This might be a v4/v5. High Def Graphics with Sonic Game might be a v5. As v2 and v3 came with Altered Beast.
Anyone who isn't a total idiot fanboy would have to admit the Genesis is probably in the top 5 greatest consoles ever. Anything less than that and you've got some ridiculous cluelessness and bias going on. It's also a valid argument that it could be the best of all time, but it's not always easy to truly pick out the best among multiple high quality contenders. Anyway, if I had to give a totally objective listing of the top 5 consoles of all time (in no particular order), they'd be:
- Sega Genesis
- NES
- SNES
- PlayStation 1
- Atari 2600 (for being the first to go more or less mainstream)
An honorable mention would go to the Sega Master System due to it's insane success in Europe and Brazil. However, being an American, I'm looking at it with my American bias here.
Your list fails. It doesn't have tha Saturn on it . :p
Oh, I love my Saturn, but it was a market failure, and in the spirit of objectivity, I had to leave it off, regrettably.
Well people like to stick with/defend what know. I'm really not sure what's stopping people from actually giving the Genesis a shot even through emulation except from wild and unfounded speculation that it's an inherently bad console with no redeeming qualities.Quote:

SMS was black, Genesis was black, why in the blue hell would you mess with that and go with any color other than black for Saturn? Granted, most Dreamcasts are white, but even then the black ones look cooler (other than that stupid Sega Sports logo plastered on there).
What's wrong with the North American Saturn? I always liked the matte finish black finish to the grey or white Saturn. I also prefer the black "Sports Edition" Dreamcast to the white one.Quote:

Besides these types of forums like Sega 16 and such, I'm glad people elsewhere online are starting to appreciate the Genesis and learn the model 1 HDG model is not shit sound, ah the warhorns are sounding. Especially on youtube now, I'm glad people are waking up.
"No crossover games on list", um wasn't Aladdin on SNES too ? Or is Genesis one slightly different ?

I've thought about getting a Japanese Saturn, but no matter what system you own, you'll have to do cart swaps when you play some of those Capcom and SNK fighters.
Hmm, I guess I should've been a bit more clear. Popularity doesn't necessarily equal quality, but popularity can result in a greater number of quality games as that tends to results in more developers spending more resources on developing games for the more popular platform. There is more to my ranking the PS1 over the Saturn as overall a better console than just popularity or even the greater number of games.Quote:

However, back at the time, it really was an oddball design, even for Sega. Even Sega's top of the line arcade machines, like the Model 2 and Model 3, were pretty much designed around a single powerful CPU with matching single powerful GPU. The complicated design of the Saturn made it significantly more difficult for programmers to take advantage of its power, and even if it was more powerful than the PS1, most programmers couldn't take advantage of that extra power and as a result it appeared to be less powerful.
- Triangular polygons: I was actually taking a 3D computer graphics programming class late in the Saturn's life, so this is something I'm somewhat familiar with. Basically, every 3D design tool, class on 3D graphics programming, book on 3D graphics programming, etc., was based around the notion of using triangular polygons. Triangular polygons were and are the standard for 3D graphics. Even the vast majority of math and algorithms cooked up for 3D graphics programming assumes triangular polygons. Now, I have heard the argument that quadrilateral polygons, like the Saturn used, are in many ways more flexible than the triangles everyone else used. Even if that were the case, the fact that no one else used them, no one doing advanced graphics research worked with them, etc., again made the Saturn more difficult to program for than it needed to be. I haven't looked at the mathematical/algorithmic differences between using triangular and quadrilateral polygons, but it's also entirely possible that some of the algorithms designed for very efficient handling of triangular polygons simply do not work with quadrilateral polygons, also damaging the Saturn's perceived power.
- Hardware MJPEG decoding: This is a very minor nit, but the stock PS1 was better at rendering video cutscenes than the stock Saturn was (yes, the Saturn had the MPEG card, but it wasn't stock, and I don't think was even available outside Japan). While FMV games were already pretty much dead by the time the PS1 and Saturn came onto the market and we can argue now as to whether some games used way too many cutscenes, it's hard to argue that the judicious use of the occasional FMV cut scene did not add a nice touch of polish to a game (again, assuming it's not overused). The PS1 was simply better at doing it.
- Better programming tools: One of the biggest knocks against the Saturn was that Sega's development tools for it were crap compared to the PS1. The C programming libraries, if they even existed, were limited and the only way to take full advantage of the Saturn was to do raw assembly programming. What's worse, the Saturn's SH-2 CPUs weren't exactly commonly used either, so it's a bit of an oddball assembly. The PS1 used a MIPS family CPU, which was also used in the N64, SGI workstations, and often college classes as an example of a "modern" CPU design. Even ignoring the increased likelihood of programmers being more familiar with MIPS assembly as opposed to SH-2 assembly, one of Sony's first things they did when developing the PS1 was develop a version of the gcc C compiler for it as well as provide a bunch of C language libraries to take advantage of the vast majority of features on the PS1. The C code may not be as fast or efficient as hand-optimized assembly, but in many cases it could be "good enough" while being significantly easier to use. If nothing else, it would allow programmers to use C for aspects of the program that may not require top-end speed while only having to require little bits of assembly for the most performance-critical bits of code.
Don't get me wrong. I loved my Saturn and I held out on buying a PS1 until a couple of years after buying my Saturn. It had lots of great games on it and is certainly a console that deserves respect. However, in retrospect, I do think the PS1 was the better console in many ways.
I agree that time hasn't been good to it, but its place as the first home console to get popularity does put it in the top 5. If the VCS bombed, it's entirely possible that no one else would've entered the console market, video game crash notwithstanding.Quote:

Genesis is my third favorite after the Atari 2600 and NES. Atari basically began the industry, NES brought it back and Genesis perfected it. (; I have a HD Graphics Model 1 and refuse to give it up. I play it nearly every day along with my other consoles at home or in my dorm.
