This is awesome. Thanks for showing.
Shouldn't this be in the new megadrive games thread? Is that being updated?
Also why is he limiting himself to 1 MB ? He says a real 1 MB cart is easier to make than bigger ones. Why is that? Isn't it just cheaper or are there other reasons?
Anyway the homebrew scene is getting bigger!
The cost of the eprom from 1MB to 2MB is nominal, maybe $0.30 to $1.00 at most, while 4MB eproms are about $1.50 more. PCB's for all sizes can be found in donors less than $1, but these are all based on what I've seen and experienced. Maybe where the creator lives, it's not that cheap? Or maybe they aren't knowledgeable in that area and were given some false information.
It appears he's still updating it, as he updated/posted in his thread yesterday or the day before, on the Devster forums: http://devster.proboards.com/thread/945/sms-brawl
someone make him come on board!
maybe he was referring to more complexity in memory mapping or in the coding process anyway, I know nothing about this
I watched the videos earlier today. This is such a great effort! From what I read, this is his first effort programming a game such as this! I am really interested to see how he tweaks the game in the coming months! It looks great!
Dynamite Dux has to get in on this.
Great idea for a game! :)
Hello everyone,
getting back to business after a few weeks long pause :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwSuMCqgSL0
- new character : Dr Social
- new arena : Master of Darkness
- stat screen in two player mode
- better collisions
ROM download :
http://david.bonafonte.free.fr/SMSBrawl/SMSBrawl.bin
I would have never thought that we would see Master of Darkness featured in a new game! Excellent! One reason I like this homebrew effort is because it features so many forgotten characters! Great job!
Hello everybody !
New version :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aj3bvAvnwVQ
New features :
- Story/tournament mode added.
- New character with his arena : Teddy Boy.
- A few AI & balance issues fixed.
Be warned : story mode can be very hard, depending on which character you play !

This looks like an awesome project. I have but one little suggestion: The life bars are cool but they look backwards compared to what most people are used to seeing. Yellow usually represents remaining life and red represents depleted life. Anyway to flop the colors of the life bar?
You're not the first one to tell me that. Do that really bother people ? I can change that easily but I like to make a change from usual conventions :)
BTW I'm quite happy to discuss with you since I really like Gamesack ! It's without contest my favourite retro videogame show on Youtube !
Thanks! It's your project so you can handle it the way you wish. If it were my project life would be yellow and death would be red, but it's not my project. :)
Anyway I am keeping an eye on this one because I'd like to feature it in our next Homebrew and Hacks episode. That won't be for a while so no rush or anything.
I'd be honored to have it featured in a gamesack episode.
I'll take my time to finish and polish the game anyway. I think I still have a few months to go.
I played a game once (possibly Terminator NES) where the lifebar colours we're flipped and it throws me off everytime.
This however, looks like a good game, which Terminator NES isn't, so even if the lifebar colours are flipped I will enjoy it regardless.
This is a great game and it's coming along very nicely!
Hello everyone,
no update for today but a rough draft for the future box art :

Comments are welcome !
Looking nice, maybe someone could redraw all characters (faithfully) but in the same color/art style ?
I could try that, but I'm not sure the result would be that great (the main problem would be to recolor the whole picture). Besides, mixing the styles has its charms too.
I've tried some cleanup and redrawing of the characters, to homogenize the drawing.
Here is a test on some selected characters :

And this is what the final art should look like :

Just a small note that it looks a bit like Sonic's having his shoe pulled off. ;)
Hello everyone,
after a few weeks long pause, here is the new version of the game :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dx-z9df2SPE
New features :
- More options : timer (with one strike KO mode when timer's over), control selection.
- New character : Bin from Dynamite Dux.
- Two new arenas.
I don't know how i missed this, but it's a pretty cool project.
Also, i would like to second this:
It's a pretty popular character in Brazil as well, where the Master System was a big thing and remains very popular.Quote:
I like this project and would like to ask you: Is it possible to include a playable game character Chapulín Colorado (The Red Grasshopper) of the game Chapolim x Dracula? It would be a nice addition, and also would give popularity in Latin America. Already, Thanks.
This is the game, which is a Hack made by Tec Toy of the game Ghost House:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehPPX4c_8sQ
I'll give you the same answer as I just did on youtube :
Sorry, I decided to stick with Sega characters only. Besides, I grew up with the european Master System and the characters from the Tec Toy adaptations don't really appeal to me.
But when the game's finished I'll release all the sources on a website, so If anyone is interested to create a "brazilian" hack of the game (with Sapo Xule, Monica, el Chapulin...), I won't have any problem with that !
Hello everybody,
big update, the character roster is complete :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWQcN9ceTBQ
The game isn't finished yet, I still have the power-ups to add and a few other things.
Hello everyone,
The game was advanced enough so I could make a "beta version" physical cartridge out of it, that I offered to my brother as a gift for last Christmas (thanks to Redfield1 for making the cart).
This is what it looks like :
http://david.bonafonte.free.fr/images/smsb_cart.JPG
BTW, I'm still (slowly) working on the game !
At last all the animations done by Axel Grimard are in the game.
Here is a video with all of them (spoiler alert : you'll see the hidden characters) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ex_1LKUzc3c
Also, scoring has been added to the story mode, and you can see your hi-scores from the main menu.
Download link still the same :

awesome, thanks! I'm still enjoying these updates. Would you consider a naming convetion to avoid people thinking they have the latest version when they haven't? I know the link doen't change, which is conveniente, though
Hidden characters? Awesome! Having this dynamic compels the player to progress further in the game. Nice job on the label, insert, manual design. I'm sure your brother was pretty stoked to play the game after receiving it as a gift! It's good to see that you are still working on the game! It looks great!
I realize I didn't say how much I find your project awesome. Done :)
I hope you'll be able to implement a clever gameplay !
I hope the powerups will do that
Thanks all for the nice comments !
Well, as you pointed it, the fact that the link doesn't change is convenient, and it wouldn't be the case if I'd use a naming convention with different file names.
He was pretty stoked indeed, and mostly suprised at first, he didn't expect it ;)
I'll try to do my best, but don't expect a very deep gameplay, my main goal is still to stay pretty close to the original games and their gameplay.
Awesome improvements Bonaf!!!
Amazing game project!!!
Hello everyone,
I've got some stuff to show you.
A little family picture with all the games from which the SMS Brawl fighters come :

Really a neat little game! Tested it on my Everdrive MD and MegaEverdrive, works perfectly. Love it!
