Hoot - a music player for Japanese home computers

I just found out about a computer program that I figured some people on here might be interested in. It's called Hoot and it's a music player for Japanese home computers (PC-88/98, X68000, etc.) as well as arcade games. It plays formats that I can't even find Winamp plugins for. It's a pain to set it up since it's all in Japanese and the only English documentation I could find was for an old version of the program, but it's pretty awesome once you get it working. If anyone has any questions about how to get it working I'd be happy to help.

I've played with Modo and it's quite nice. There's also Droidsound which isn't as acccurate in terms of playback but has a much nicer interface. Modizer for iOS is absolutely fantastic.

Hoot crashes in Wine (1.7.19), even with native XML3 and XML4.

Did you follow these instructions? I have a friend who got it to work. What OS are you on?

^Yes. I've solved some of the problem: the XML3 & 4 overrides were set to 'Native then Builtin'. Changing them to just 'Native (Windows)' stops Hoot from crashing outright. Now it displays 'Description file load error: hoot.xml'.

Alright. Do you have any of the music files, or just the Hoot executable and the stuff that came with it?

I have everything needed. All is well, now. Re-installing XML3 with Winetricks got rid of the error. This is how it's done.

Outside of some titles' main/closing themes and such, new games have lost a lot when it comes to music.

It really is sad. For whatever reason, modern video games have gone towards very atmospheric music, or no music at all. The most recent games I can remember the soundtrack to are Hotline Miami and VVVVVV, both of which are retro styled in the first place.
