eh another one of those
id be more interested in what are the five cheapest video games ever
either because of their quality or because they are overproduced ( fifa's can be had used for a pittance )
You didn't read the article. It covers the 5 most expensive games by production costs, not aftermarket value.
And yeah, where is Shenmue? The list looks like a dudebro wrote it, with FF7 being a childhood favorite.
I love how MW2's production costs are 1/3 of its marketing budget. Not surprising at all.
Yeah, when you have to sell into the tens of millions just to break even, you're doing something wrong budget-wise.
As for the five most expensive games?
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
D-Force (SNES)
Hang-On/Safari Hunt (SMS)
Space Invaders (2600)
Find one of those at a flea market, and you'll be set for life once you slap a "VGA 90% Gold" sticker right on the cart label and throw it on ebay.
I'm stunned by the amount Activision is spending on Destiny. I know it has a big scope and should be a high quality game, but when I see a pricetag that high, I can't help but think that they wasted development time/money reworking or redoing things, which is never a good sign. I hope I'm wrong because I would love to see my PS3 go out with a bang.
Destiny needs a miracle to break even. It doesn't matter how great a game it is, it's going to be difficult to sell 15 million copies just because it is a new IP that doesn't have the recognition of GTA or Modern Warfare. Not to mention that some previews have criticized its gameplay for being mediocre: http://kotaku.com/i-played-45-minute...ori-1568127899
FF7 included marketing budget which swelled it up to 145 million dollars. Shenmue doesn't mention anything about how much the marketing budget was.

chill out its a good article. i skipped the ff7 thing tho.
The budget for Destiny is that large, because a large part of the game is an MMO, and will have content generated for the next 10 years. They are hoping it will be the next World of Warcraft.
By the way, they said FF7 started on the snes (lol) and moved to N64 (LOL)...
Yeah. I know Shenmue's development budget was quite high, but Sega surely didn't spend anywhere near as much on marketing as was spent on FFVII... it likely doesn't quite make this list, though as we have no idea what Sega's marketing costs were for the game as far as I know, it's impossible to say for sure.
