Panzer Dragoon Saga remake via Kickstarter?

OK so there hasn't been such a thing...yet, but when I see stuff like Reading Rainbow acquiring one million in a day for a revival, I can't help but think anything could get going on Kickstarter. Nevermind the failed James Pond reboot, as PDS is something people actually give a shit about. And I know just the person to mastermind it. As a new OUYA user, I am particularly pleased with Christian Whitehead's retro engine which he used for the HD remake of Sonic 1, 2 and CD. The fact that he went legit with Sega is also re-assuring. Thus, I ask that someone get in contact with him to ask if he can consider a PDS remake. First, we'd need him to contact Sega about it to see if they'll even consider it to begin with. Then they can estimate the cost for which to ask during the launch of their Kickstarter campaign. Could this be a viable approach?

i doubt a remake will be better.

i always feared that a full remake would kill the actual atmosphere of the real one.
if they would just make it hd and repolishing graphics like zelda ocarina N64 to 3ds
in that sense i would totally be in for it. but a kickstarter no. i dont pay peeps to make games and then pay again to buy it. there have been so much fraudes.

if sega or any other company would start doing this and i mean as whole remake for all. pd 12 en orta and saga. id be happy to buy it.

First of all you need Christian Whitehead to be interested in doing so.

and second of all you need Sega's blessing, as they still own the trademarks of course.

Reading Rainbow was huge for 30 years, and is attempting to provide free web-based content for kids and classrooms.

Panzer Dragoon was a niche rail shooter franchise that nobody bought, on platforms that never dominated the market. It's sales edge is gone, there are plenty of shooters and games with dragons to get today so it's a hard sell to anybody who isn't a nostalgia driven Sega fan.

Orta failed. The series is dead. Kickstarter won't save it.

To be fair, Saga was not a rail shooter, it was an RPG that was vastly different from any other entry in the franchise.

However the rest of the points still stand. The series and Saga in particular have a strong following on fan and collecting sites, but is that enough to successfully fund it? Especially with the hurdles of the source code being lost, the current surviving members of the original development team being scattered to the wind, and SEGA's general attitude toward anything that isn't Sonic or Total War.

I would like to see it happen, one to actually own the game, and two, to laugh at all the people who bought their $500.00 copies. A remake would be preferred to at least soften up all those ugly hard polygon edges on, uh, Edge.

You could advertise it as the rerelease of one of the "most rarest, most sought-after critically-acclaimed games of all time!*" People eat that type of stuff up on kickstarter.

Would be nice, considering how expensive the game goes for on ebay because Sega sent 50 or so copies to various videogame stores with really small saturn section. And each got only one copy of the game

If you can raise a few million dollars then Sega would probably do it otherwise I doubt it.

I remember reading some site's retrospective of the series, and in an interview with Yukio Futatsugi and it seemed like it was implied that there were some in-house political reasons why the game had stayed on the Saturn and was never ported to anything else, in addition to the technical problems that was Saturn games in general. Unfortunately the interview never went into detail about it.

Sega has whored out multiple Genesis compilations, multiple DC games. Anything Saturn related is simply a PC port over. We just recently got a few System-16 emus a few years ago. I think anything coming from the Saturn would simply be to much work for them. Which is ironic since the Saturn was only moderately successful in Japan.

If that's the case, the only hope for people to experience it who are not wealthy would be SSF.

A good Saturn modchip costs $40. That's expensive?

I think it's state in the sort of video game fan consciousness, if you will, is such that it could warrant a remake.

Anyone who I've talked to that really likes RPGs has, to me at least, expressed interest in playing this game, but is sort of weary of the 300$ price tag as well as whatever price Saturn's are these days. I think it's a good idea.

We don't even know how impossible it would until we try. It's not going to be a full fledged remake, just a reconstructed version with the original assets ripped that could be ported to multiple platforms. Whitehead calls himself "Friend to pixels and polys alike" and seems in tune enough with SEGA that he may consider it. We'd need to ask him if both he and in turn SEGA will consider it and how much the costs would be before we even begin to initiate a Kickstarter so a proper judgement can be made. I don't think the fact that it was coded for SEGA will make a difference with modern OSes for things like Steam, or even your standard Android platform, if you want it to be cross-platform. I still think there's a chance for this thing to get off the ground. No one has really inquired about it to the candidates mentioned, so like I said, we need to see how things could go.
