Though it isn't scaling, it is nice to hear Bimini Run mentioned.
I like pointing out that the actual real life Bimini Run was a drug smuggling route. So effectively Bimini run is the only Genesis game that has you play the role of a drug smuggler.
Ok, well they made it a kidnapping/rescue story, but we all know it's really about drug smuggling ;)
I sure its been mentioned a billion times but sonic one bonus level the whole screen rotates and the background changes animation, that's pretty cool and it fun trying to keep up with the screen turning

Man, James Pond 3 has tons of effects, it's pretty obvious the genesis version was the main focus.
Yep, no kidding. You could tell Chris and crew were really trying to show off their programming muscle. Too bad the game is still my least favorite out of the three mainline games, down to the kind of cardboard-ey looking graphics which seem to lack the rich shading of the previous games for some reason. The worst thing about it are the crazy slippery physics, they ruin the game for me. That and going fast = hitting enemies face first. James Pond 2 was much better.
And yeah, a 32 colour game with no parallax requiring AGA makes 0 sense. That was pure laziness, no excuse.
Of course it's obvious since the SNES port looks like it has been trolled but still that wouldn't have prevented from doing a side-by-side comparison even if it will be easy / fast victory.
Also, apart from those visual effects lacking in the SNES version, the Genesis version once again runs in higher-res which is really helping for this type of game.
As for the whole serie, i only well know Robocod which kinda amazed me when i discovered it back then, 20 years ago. Its fast & very enjoyable gameplay + colorful & fun universe was something very addictive. But the 3rd opus seems interesting.
Personally, I really don't think the SNES version was gimped on purpose. Millennium simply seemed to have a tendency to make ports on a very tight schedule. According to some article that I came across a couple months ago (can't find it anymore, unfortunately), the Genesis version of Robocod was slapped together in a couple weeks. As they didn't have the time to adjust the backgrounds to something that took advantage of the Genesis's PPU and couldn't approximate the copper effects of the Amiga version either, they look really plain.
James Pond 3 on Genesis/Mega Drive obviously was the lead version as the console was extremely popular in the UK at the time. The Amiga version looks like it's been hastily cobbled together in a couple days. When it came to porting the game to the SNES, they obviously didn't have the time to adjust the fancy effects to its somewhat kooky Mode 7, so they ditched them. Well, at least the SNES port received a transparent HUD, which is sort of cool-looking.
Or maybe this way for SNES's James Pond 3.
But sometimes some games seems really deliberately downgraded, in a way or another &, in a way or another... You know, those Nintendo little pets, which still ultimately, deliberately or not, have released as good or even better games on Mega Drive...
As for Robocod on Genesis, dunno how it compares to the Amiga version but it's better than the SNES version.

Have you come across this comparison yet? For the backgrounds found in the Genesis version, they recycled a bunch of foreground tiles and made them darker, so it seems. Fortunately, the comparison doesn't cover the bazillion other versions of the game.Quote:

Anyway when i read the Robocod comparison i focused more on the MD Vs. SNES part but i'll check again what have been said about the Amiga versions. As for the backgrounds, except the difference in colors they're similar design-wise in the MD & SNES versions & both differents from the Amiga versions.
BTW the Japanese Mega Drive version doesn't have the screen based on Robocop movie during the demo but a more conventionnal screen.
