Sega's 8-bit system which competed with the NES and actually had superior graphics. It caught on more in Europe and Brazil than in the United States unfortunately. There are some real gems on it and I encourage you to do some research.
The original MS has a card slot in addition to the cart slot. That was an effort to compete with the PCE HuCards... at one time, credit card type game cards were big. They left that off future models as cards faded quick to be replaced by full-size carts.

when i was younger I only knew of NES and Genesis. I saw Master System stuff in stores but had no clue if it was newer or older. It wasnt until N64 days i read about master system I had no idea it was on NES level. I never seen them used or anything in rental stores like block buster.

And the game cases usually don't even identify the game as an SMS game. They just say "SEGA". Of course, there was no confusion at the time, but now it's not really surprising that somebody thinks it's for a 3rd party Genesis system.
