You are more than welcome to debate it all you want, but like I said...
In the end, it comes down to answering just three questions. Will it be well organized? Will it be competitive? Will it be fun?
I think that's a yes to all.

How about Genesis Model 1 Systems cheaper then a SNES
As I said before, I didn't post the tournament to debate different consoles/versions.
Yes, I agree the Sega Genesis Model 1 by itself is cheaper than the SNES.
It's my opinion that the SNES version of NBA Jam TE has better sound and graphics than the Sega Genesis version. Albeit, the Sega Genesis does have more in game commentary and has in game music, however, with that many systems playing at once, the music would get fairly annoying and I don't want the game on mute.
It's really a moot point though, because the equipment has been already been acquired.
Whether they are Nintendo, Sega, Jaguar, or Playstation followers, I invite everyone to come play, because its about the competitiveness and fun for a really good game on any console.
How many people signed up for it?
You all are harsh. No need to rip the guy apart because he's trying to organize something positive like this, even if it could've been better. It takes a lot of work to put something like this together and I wish it was done more.
About a dozen so far. We just announced it on the 10th so its still early. Registration ends on Sept 26

We've received a ton of likes on FB so far, and almost all reception has been positive.

That's why I'm creating this tournament. Aside from TecmoMadison, there's really very little effort out there to have competitions for retro games outside of fighters. Retro sports games are so underrepresented despite how popular they were and are still a ton of fun.
BTW, if any of you are going to be at the SGC in Arlington, stop by the On Fire Championships booth and say hello.
