PlayStation Museum and their rankings

Today, I've had the opportunity to browse through PlayStation Museum's website and their rankings. Now let me start by saying something: if you didn't already know, the fifth generation is the one I find the most dated because early 3D did not age as well as the 2D games before it. Everything about that era screams "cheese". I did not get a PSOne until long after I had my N64 (which I've had since it debuted in 1996), and despite the fact that there were some true gems in this era, nostalgia is a big factor as well as the campiness which makes these games somewhat more enjoyable. However, I have played a good deal of games on that list and this guy seems to hit the mark with his site ratings based on those I've played. I want to know what everyone here thinks of the scores he gives? I am surprised to see Resident Evil 1.5 at the top of the review list rather than FFVII, which is to be expected from PS fandom, but at least it's something different.

I'm with you on the 5th gen feeling the most dated. I spent most of that period on PC.

I don't think it's terribly surprising to not see FFVII at the top of this list. It's become a popular game to hate on over the past several years.

I wonder if the Nintendo fanboys have some kind of grudge against FFVII since it was released on the PS1. I knew this guy back in the day who loved his SNES and its RPGs, and like a true dedicated fan he waited patiently for the N64 to be released while I had a blast with my PS1. When the first screens of FFVII started appearing in game magazines, I remember him being all negative about how the new style sucked and how the character models looked like blobs and so on. I'm sure his attitude would have been different if it was on the N64!

But I've noticed over the years that when someone says FFVII is the best FF, someone else will inevitably argue that FFVI is the best and VII is when the series went downhill.

I think there were a lot of people like your friend back in its day who were pissed about Square jumping ship, but the hate for it today probably comes more from the fact that it hasn't really held up well enough over the years to sustain the hype and popularity it once had. The game used to be worshiped to the point of obnoxiousness, and undeservedly so, which has caused the rubber band to snap back in the other direction where all of a sudden all the cool kids are hating on it to the point of obnoxiousness. It seems like people either have to love the game unequivocally or consider it the worst game ever with no room for discussion.

There's also the fact that the JRPG has really fallen out of favor as a genre with a niche crowd that attracts a lot of elitists who regard Final Fantasy 7 as "baby's first JRPG" in the same way a lot of elitist anime fans regard Dragon Ball Z as "baby's first anime." At the same time those goons readily ignore the cultural and artistic impact those things had on the hobby they love so much. And you also have kids born after the JRPG craze who don't get what the fuss is about to begin with.

But there are a few saner heads in the middle willing to say it's not as good as they remembered it, but it was still a decent and highly influential game in the genre.

These are observations from an outsider though. I find the entire genre to be pretty boring with some notable exceptions.

FFVII was a good game. I finished it sometime long after the PlayStation died before selling my copy not far back. Honestly, I ignored the hype and took it with a grain of salt. I enjoyed it, seeing the game for what it was, and had fun. I have only played Final Fantasy 1-10 and so far I don't think there has been a single one I have played yet that outright sucks, just some I enjoyed more than others. On the other hand, I ignore stuff like GameFAQs haterade and fanboy hype on practically everything, though I will acknowledge mainstream critical reviews as being helpful in deciding what games to look into, if not taking their opinions as gospel. As far as its status in the PS1 world, I don't really know if FFVII left enough of an impact of me to be my #1 from the fifth gen. I think Super Mario 64 still gets my blessing for that purpose. Regardless, I might even say I enjoyed the first Ape Escape more than FFVII as far as PS1 games go. I probably enjoy my Nintendo 64 more because I had it during its heydey and it reminds me of the transitions and novelties of the era that made it interesting, if less favorable by today's standards. But again the campiness of this era is also a big factor, and that's why we have reviewers on Youtube such as "Gaming in the Clinton Years".

I don't think RE being at the top is a surprise. It was just as big a title for the PS as FFVII was BITD. It is refreshing to see someone appreciate the PS for something other than FFVII though.

OK, I just went to http://playstationmuseum.com/ and I don't really know what you're talking about with the rankings. The site gives 5 stars out of 5 to a lot of games, including RE and FFVII. Not sure what you were looking at. There's also a "Top 50 user reviews" frame on the right that ranks user votes, but only like 2 people vote for each game so it's meaningless.

That's because 6 is the best. And 7, while being a good game, is incredibly overrated.

I'd like to see the original Playstation contininue to hang back in the shadows for now. The prices for some of the high profile titles have finally started to come back down to reasonable. I just picked up a clean copy of Parasite Eve for $15 and I know a store where I can get Suikoden for $40.

Yeah, I've always thought it's weird that the PSX hasn't exploded among collectors yet. Most titles are very affordable except a handful of mostly RPGs that cost a billion dollars each.

It depends. Some big names like Castlevania bring in a decent buck. Uncommon popular titles are getting expensive (Klonoa, Mega Man Legends 2) and bunch of the RPGs will go for boatloads like you said.

The supply just outstrips the demand for most titles I guess. Maybe it's because the library is just so huge. It certainly is an easy console to collect for and there's also some great imports.

It's unfortunate I'm not really the hugest fan of this generation. I've already pretty much got the games I like for it.

Several years ago, the prices were pretty sky high on some very common titles like FF VII. You can now get that title for under $25, while back in 2011 it probably would have set you back @ $60.

Suikoden was going for as much as $120.

All of the classic gaming YouTube guys have been focusing on SNES and NES, so they are now the place to go for a little bit of price-gouging.

I agree that the early 3D graphics of the PS1 have not aged well. A lot of PS1 games are also PC ports since PC gaming was at its peak at the time, and the PC versions are usually superior. Some games, such as Resident Evil, have been remade on later consoles as well. And given the success and popularity of the PS1, there is a huge supply of games floating around out there. The simple jewel case that games often came in are also not likely to be thrown out like older game boxes would have been, so CIB is pretty much the norm for PS1 games. All of these factors (and probably a lot more) have kept prices low aside from a few exceptions.

And if you haven't played it yet, you can pick up my all time favorite PS1 game, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain for not that much!

N64 has seen a bit of a crash in prices as well over the past year or two.
