Pico!
- Nah, MD obviously, with SMS coming in a close second. Then Saturn and Dreamcast.
I agree with Christuser, I also think Genesis was their best, with SMS second. Game Gear might be third because it's essentially a continuation of the SMS. Dreamcast and Saturn are probably tied at fourth. But I'm tempted to put either above GG. Then after DC/SS we have the SCD and SG-1000 also tied, since they're both small but decent libraries for what they offer. The 32x is at the bottom of the bunch. Pico I don't know how to rate because it's mostly an edutainment system, but it's certainly much more innovative than the LeapFrog systems which it inspired.
We should be able to choose as many as we like. I'm a free love SEGA guy, I have many favorites!
I played one of those Saga consoles once.
It was awful.
But seriously Sega Genesis.
I don't even know what an Advanced Pico Beena is, but it's advanced and it sounds awesome so I voted for it.
Genny! It has tons of games that I like to play, nuff' said.
While the Dreamcast was an amazing console IMO (and actually the first I owned), I have to vote the mega drive. I simply find the 2d era much more fulfilling than everything that came after, and while the Saturn is considered the '2d powerhouse' I don't believe it betters the MD in games that actually came out. Sega were firing on all cylinders with the MD, and it shows.
My favorites are in this order...
1. Sega Genesis
2. Sega Master System / Game Gear
3. Sega Dreamcast
4. Sega Saturn
saturn
i just love the underdog and its library
Genesis still sad it had to end on a crappy note unlike the Snes which just kept releasing great software until the end.
I can never choose. By volume it would be the Genesis + 32X, as those games have been the cheapest and easiest to collect in complete condition up until I quit collecting. By preference, let's see, I bought all of them at or near launch except the Master System I bought as my first console in Summer 1988. The Master System, Sega CD and Saturn took about six months of waiting or exploring their libraries for me to get over buyers guilt and find some gaming satisfaction. The Genesis, 32X and Dreamcast were purchased specifically for their already released games and I enjoyed the hell out of them over any other console I owned at the time.
I bought my Master System and my dad picked up After Burner, Wonderboy, Quartet and Space Harrier, I think. All of these were interesting, but not the "Arcade at home" that I was hoping for. After I played the heck out of these games, and Golvellius, Zillion and Shinobi I had no regrets for picking the Master System up before the NES. I also could not resist recollecting every game I played back in the day once I started picking up cheap games in the early 2000s.
The Genesis disappointed me with its Arcade ports starting with Golden Axe all the way through Super Thunder Blade, After Burner II, Super Monaco GP, Crack Down and Galaxy Force. But when I played Ghouls N Ghosts and Strider this disappointment was completely erased. Revenge of Shinobi, far earlier than that, set my expectations high for the Genesis library. 1991's Streets of Rage and ToeJam&Earl were big hits with my sister and I as well. After that it was pretty much Streets of Rage 2.
Sega CD took about six months to really show what it could do with Batman Returns, and even that I had already played over half of on the Genesis. Silpheed always felt shallow to me, but I thought Rebel Assault was perfect for the platform. The rest of the scaler library failed to convince me to make a purchase until I found it on discount years later. Final Fight CD, Sonic CD, the Lunar games, Dark Wizard and Shining Force CD justified the purchase well enough for me, but I found myself enjoying rooting through the library for jems more than actually playing games during its lifecycle.
The 32X I bought specifically for Virtua Racing Deluxe, Space Harrier, After Burner Complete and Doom, none of which disappointed me in any way at the time. Star Wars Arcade was a huge disappointment for sure, especially with the tie fighters flying through walls and the super low detail graphics. Shadow Squadron sealed my appreciation of this little add-on only two months after I bought it with less than a month's part time minimum wage. If the poll can be read as it is written and I could combine the Genesis with the 32X, then this would probably be my favorite Sega system.
Saturn had a rough first six months, with lots of games that I thought were basically upgraded Sega CD games or games that should have been on the Sega CD and or 32X. Before Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter 2 that November, I had a good time with Myst, D, and Cyber Speedway but that was about all. Nothing really seemed to scream "buy me" until November. Virtual On, Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Virtua Cop, Shining the Holy Arc, Gun Griffon, and others saturated my next gen felt needs while I collected Genesis, Sega CD and 32X games on discount. Even 1997-98 had plenty of Saturn titles for me to pick up new. Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, Sonic R, NiGHTs, Christmas NiGHTs and Tomb Raider had me fully occupied. When I wasn't playing the Street Fighter Alpha games or Dragon Force and buddies' houses that is.
Dreamcast was something else entirely. I thought I was done with gaming and was just going to focus on more important things than gaming. I played Sonic Adventure and Power Stone at a hardcore tournament gamer's house, man I wish I could find that guy today. Anyway, these two games convinced me that 3D could be just as fast and demanding on the player, while still being easy to pick up and play, for the first time. I spent the next two years picking up games mostly on .com website discounts or renting them while hoping that I would see a resurgence of New Gameplay types for its own sake in the game industry. Yeah, Dreamcast is a bittersweet Sega console for me because of that alone, nothing but sequels was the result of that short jaunt.
Looks like I'm the only person to vote for the 32X. Eventually I'll have a copy of Knuckles Chaotix surface from the mail. Here's hoping it's good.
Have to say Sega Saturn, it was the last true 2D system. A swan song for 2D as the world awkwardly into 3D. Also had the best designed controller of all time, just a shame the system was handled so poorly in the west.
Sheath went the distance on his post! Tons of detail about not being able to choose one.
I've been playing a lot of 32X lately too. You probably won't be disappointed with Knuckles Chaotix, it's pretty impressive! Deep gameplay for a platformer.
Good points here! That's why my Saturn sits proudly on the shelf alongside the Master System and the Genesis/CD/32X. :ok:
