I never know how to react to these things, when I was their age there were no old consoles/handhelds.
I first saw an Atari 2600 and a TV Game (an console with 3 options of Pong) around 91, when I already had the Master System, and found both interesting.
When my friend that had the 2600 also bought his MS I even exchanged with him some games by the console for a few days.
When I was their age the oldest system around was a 2600, and even that was still being sold in stores.
It was like now we have the PS4, but the PS3 is still around.
so yeah, it always pisses me off how some of those kids (not all) are always like "EEEW OLD TECH"
though at least that one kid with the funny hair admitted that back then the Gameboy was high tech.
Then again, I had a Lynx so the Gameboy always felt like trash to me.
These kids are always spoiled brats. Sorry.
I hate white people
Edit: Dylan is MY BOY. He actually seemed genuinely excited to see a Game Boy.
Also Edit: That girl that said "girls can play it" is just begging for a tumblr account... although she has a point.
Why do they make them guess what it is?..why cant they tell them what it is and how games are played. making them guess will just be frustrating a then open to assume its dumb.
I love that bit where they all talk about how you would need to constantly buy new batteries.
I put 4 AA's in my Game Boy forever ago and they are yet to run out, they last forever.
I'n 37 and when I was young, the plug and play consoles like Pong were still cool to try when you came across them and the original Odyssey was still neat, even after we got an Intellivision and some of the best games. Same with electronic handhelds and stuff like Simon or those race car games with rolling images.
It pisses me off so much when I see these kids immediately yell out "HOW U INSTALL TEH APPZ ON THIS?"
You fucking don't you stupid little brats, I'll feel you all to my Shoggoth!
While watching this, I couldn't stop thinking: Their reactions and answers to the questions are pretty much what a lot of non-gamer adults would also say. "Wow, I need batteries for this thing?" "It's heavy! And the screen is so small!" I think these are pretty standard comments for someone who's never used the device before.
There weren't many (if any) of the stupid comments I was expecting, like "The touch screen doesn't work!" or "How do I get to Google?"
I alway take solace in the fact that all the crap they love now will be junk soon and faster than the Gameboy which for a long time.
These kids are so cute - and pretty smart! Love it. Great idea.
I got my first OG gameboy in 2004 and I loved it. Kids today, I'm telling ya.
My first game system was the Radio Shack TV Scoreboard, so seeing a GB for the first time really blew me away. I never got one (We weren't well off), but in retrospect, it was for the better. All older portables give me instant eyestrain, and headeache. The first one that didn't was the DS lite, but even that took it's toll on me. The 3DSXL I can stare at for hours.
I really liked the boy who knew everything about Nintendo, and was totally down with it. :ok:
Pretty much expected results for the most part. "I think it's stupid it doesn't just sense you and you have to push buttons" LOL.
But I was actually a bit surprised that a couple of the kids seemed to think it was pretty cool - or better than they expected. And much props to the kid giving it respect as a major start in the handheld industry.
I'm not gonna lie, the first time I seen a Game Boy I thought it was quite primitive and eh.
When I first bought one however, waaaay in maybe 2008, 2009? I instantly fell in love with it. I rarely use it in favour of the Pocket or the Color but it's still got it's charm.
Nobody here paid any attention on GB until 98/99, when Pokemon began airing on TV. The Game Gear also had a weak base but it was more common.
I think some of you are selling the kids short, some of them were pretty respectful of the history. Props to that one Pokemon geek kid who actually owned a Game Boy so he could go back and play the original games.
These kids weren't brought up playing the kind of games we did. They've never really known a world without handheld devices that are practically from Star Trek. In a world with crystal clear high-definition screens on devices less than a centimeter thick of course the Game Boy seems pretty terrible to most of them. I love the Game Boy as much as anyone but even when it was new it was kind of primitive. To be fair I guess I like the games more than the handheld itself. I never play on anything less than a GBA SP these days unless it's for nostalgia.
I refuse to believe that one kid talking about "apps" was being serious. We still have game systems that you can physically put games into. However the fact that most of them said they'd rather go back to their iPad and not their 3DS/Vita is kind of telling about how endangered the traditional handheld gaming market is.
Alright that's all I had to say, you can go back to shaking your canes at kids and telling them to get off your lawn if they won't appreciate your brick-sized handheld and its blurry, baby-puke green screen. ;)
I'm surprised to hear the 'game boy seemed pretty primitive' talk here - I thought that was known to be confirmed! Gunpei even referred to it as 'withered technology' during development - it was INTENTIONALLY primitive to keep the costs down, and to maximise battery life. It was the right choice, too!
But primitive and groundbreaking are not mutually exclusive :)
The only thing I can remember begging my parents for as a child (and not receiving) was the Game Boy. Having one back in the early 90s was a pretty massive deal back then. Instead I had to make do with terrible LCD games that I bought myself. Man those things were bad.
That's an interesting story, I still saw it as amazing in 1989. The only thing I could compare it to were those crappy LCD games, or worse, LED games.
Nintendo is the king of marketing dated tech, making it cool, and selling the crap out of it. Turbo Express anyone? It's nearly the same age, is far more powerful, but still failed. It's all about great marketing, and licensing.
This made me a little sad. I really thought they'd be as excited as I was when I saw my first Game Boy.
I guess I forgot how many kids have iphones these days.
I remember fondly Christmas '92. I got my Genny and my sister got her GameBoy. I was all "LOL yer gameboys" for months. Then summer up and shat on my parade. Every vacation was her playing it in the car and tent while I roasted spiders with a lighter and got pissy about not having any games to play. So I made my parents get me one too.
Yeah!
I rarely used my Lynx on the go. I tried using rechargeable batteries with the system, but they often got stuck inside, because they were slightly larger than a standard AA battery.
I've never owned an original Gameboy, but I did own a GB Color for several months. I got frustrated with trying to see the screen and eventually sold the unit. I'd like to own the original, just to see if the screen was better with its limited colors.
This screams child actors to me, but who knows. I've seen a few of these and they always go roughly along the lines of "well this is... old, exotic, and DUMB!"
I always hated that batteries in some of my devices were difficult to take out. That was until I came up with the novel idea of putting a simple ribbon inside the battery compartment that I could yank on in order to take the batteries out. A little ghetto but it does the job!
Back on topic ...
I can understand some of the reactions of the kids. Back in the late 70s and early 80s, most kids enjoyed playing some of the (Tiger) LCD devices. But in the late 80s and early 90s, thanks to the Game Boy (and other handhelds at the time) they were looked down upon as cheap garbage. If I was one of those youngsters, there is no doubt that I would favor an IPAD/tablet/android phone over any other antiquated device. Heck! Not only can you play games on these devices, you can watch movies, surf the net, (skype) chat with friends, and listen to music! Add a wireless keyboard to the mix and it functions like a mini laptop!
Game Boy is stupid because you have to actually press buttons... LOL :D
They should have a kids react to tiger LCD games video
I feel like telling the kids in the C64 one that not everyone used shitty tape drives that took forever. Floppy disks + Epyx fast load cartridge was the proper way. ;)
