Mario runs faster than Sonic

Apparently, Sonic is not a fast runner after all.

The comparisons to Mario is on the first page of the article. After reading about how slow Sonic is, and about spider-webs click the Previous link/arrow. Then skip past how much giant Japanese monsters would pee and there is the Sonic part.

I didn't watch the video on the Sonic part, but he isn't all that fast in his "first" game. Sonic 2 with the spin dash may well blow Mario away, especially those times when you can get Sonic going so fast that he runs off the screen either due to loops or those rev things. Also, there are no speed shoes in the Mario games... but I guess magic shoes shouldn't count in a speed comparison.

I'm not emotionally invested either way, but it's just shameless Nintendo hyping/Sega bashing. Ignoring the many problems of the narrator and video, they throw logic out the window while determining the variables (Mario is 9'4" tall!), and then do calculations with them. The style of the video targets idiots, but the content is even more embarrassing.

Yep. They can't stand the fact that their beloved Mario just creeps across the screen, so they play with numbers to try to find SOME solace in their sorrow. :lol:

Massage the numbers all you want, Sonic streaks across the levels while Mario plods along.

It is kind of odd that Mario rarely gets credit for how fast he moves... I doubt he's faster than Sonic, but, say, Super Mario World? He can run pretty quick!

I don't doubt it, but what a lot of Nintendo fanboys(not calling anyone here out on this, for the record) miss about Sonic is that he doesn't accelerate right away, like Mario, or any other fast character on a Nintendo console does. Even the spin dash, starting from 2 onward, with maximum revving isn't the fastest he'll move. The fact that he can keep going at the same speeds, after something pushes him along faster than his natural in-game momentum, should say a lot.

Also, it should probably be called "Game Hypothesis." People seem to forget that that's even a word, and theories, by definition, have to be proven, whereas hypotheses can be proposed explanations.

I saw the video a year or two ago, I think it was brought up on the forums here before. It only annoys me because brain-dead people will interpret this to mean the Mario games themselves move faster.

The calculations are kind of amusing (and sort of silly) but nobody should be taking it seriously.

I don't, but you just know this is fanboy fuel for the future.

Well it wasn't me, it was whoever wrote that article.

There is another flaw, I think. Did they consider the distance travelled to determine the speed? It seems like they imply that the first stage is the same length in both games.

Mario is extremely fast in Super Mario Bros. Both SMB and Sonic reach speeds where gameplay is sacrificed, but it's just optional speed bursts that change up the pacing. It's a novelty that happened to be used to market hardware around, because bitd and even now, too many people can't appreciate a lot of stuff happening at once without major slowdown. It has to be made as simple as "watch this guy go kicky fast!"

It's still interesting to know how fast certain games scroll during top speeds. I once measured how many pixels per second one or two Sonic games move at, but I can't renember how that compared to any other game. I know that I was going to also compare screen-lengths per second, since that's what we actually see on a TV screen.
