Hm, I guess I am starting to get used to the new colors...
Hi guys, I would like to apologize. It seems that I did something so bad that offended many people and that was not my Intent.
I always try to improve and if you noticed I put the picture and said "first test" so that we could make that work always shared.
But as I've only seen negative reviews and no constructive suggestion I believe it was a mistake messing this game.
But I will try to explain, you would not get so upset with me. If you look at this picture I think you can understand.

The scenario consists of one color palette shared between all the elements. Except for the sky but the mountains use parts of other elements.
So it is impossible to leave the pillar and the grass as the original if I want to improve the image as a whole.
If someone posted a picture here made with photoshop these altered elements in isolation it simply did not respect the original art, I do not have that luxury here.
The Alianger friend helped me by sharing the artwork of the game and making some samples via photoshop.
He did not use the color palette of the mega drive but used something close to help me with references and see that even then he had to change the grass.

I hope you have understood and sorry again for making this monstrosity.
I thought it was pretty clear that the green in the trees was because of the green grass. Change that one color in the palette and anything else that references it will change as well. That alone would make this game potentially not worth messing with. I'm supposing that the ability to hack colors hasn't extended to changing palette entries for individual tiles, but only the sub palette entry.
Don't let the griping get at you, it is a sega-16 tradition.
Don't take the complaints so seriously man, everybody has a different opinion on everything.
I remember when I was converting the Mortal Kombat II art for MKII Unlimited and half the people that
I showed my work to said "meh it looks bad you need to use more colors!" which was just not possible.
I could have said fuck it and quit, or I could continue and just do my best.
So I continued, and Smoke put the art into his hack and it came out great.
dont listen to me im color blind slightly
The problem I have with making games less vibrant is that it's falling right into the Genesis' weakness: The Genesis/MD has no colors. So taking a game that's colorful and making it desaturated and darker only glorifies those weaknesses. Kind of like how Final Fight CD looks a lot more muddy and bland with the recolor even though it may be closer to the arcade. Maybe Alisia Dragoon is not the best game to change because of the way they incorporated the palettes. I mean it's only a slightly above average game anyway.
Well some people complained that the art was too grainy, some complained that it lacked color.
So I get pyron's frustration, here I was trying to keep every little bit of detail intact and still people complained.
I also met a lot of people who were genuinely impressed though, but its always the haters you remember. :D
A lot of people don't understand how much work goes into these things, and that the limitations (though fun to work with)
can be super frustrating when you got people commenting who don't understand said limitations.
Didn't get any bad lip from anyone here though, just other forums. (who probably weren't really all that much into the MD/Gen)
Sorry Joe, I respect your opinion but I would like to express my point of view here.
As a guy who also loves the Mega Drive have to disagree strongly.
Games like Alisia Dragon 'and others use the same method of wrong colors spread across the screen where there dosent have a correct shading and super saturated colors to hide those mistakes that strengthen the weaknesses of the mega drive.
When I look at a tree that has gray, wine, green and other colors except the brown which is correct makes me very sad.
What good add multiple colors and didn't make good use of none of them?
And look who formerly played most on your small TV with composite video this could go unnoticed.
But today for people like you using RGB and others who use Svideo these problems are very evident.
And this propaganda Mega Drive games have to be saturated think a big mistake.
Below successful games that I grew up with them, are old and use the colors correctly.

I do not know anyone who saw these games up on time and were not impressed with its graphics and not saturated with the colors being used in correct ways.
Just make good use of them, just that. And it looks funny ... the sheath just released a video of SF2 with my patch of color and with amazing sound driver Stef.
And look, even in composite video he regulated the TV and it was the game with the bright colors.

Sorry anything, but just wanted to express my opinion too, thanks Joe.
Joe, the problem with the genesis has never been a lack of "colourfulness". In fact, most games are overly colourful. The reason people complained about "lack of colours" on the genesis is that you have terrible colour mixes like in Alisia Dragoon (trees with green highlights wtf). Alisia Dragoon is not a colourful game, it's very dark, drab and chaotic in it's colouring. Making it bland is a massive improvement. Bland is not wrong, bland is what the genesis rarely did actually. Look at a lot of the games SNES fans like, they're about as "colourful" as a modern FPS.
This is what's considered the best in SNES graphics:

This is what the genesis typically did:

Since it's here, I think it is worth putting the original gameplay vids captured from the same HVR 1600 for a 1:1 comparison:

There should be direct links to the PC-Engine and SNES gameplay videos at the links. I'm still working on getting the HD PVR right or I'd just redo a total gameplay comparison video with RGB->Component this afternoon.
I have the same opinion of Pyron and Kamhal: oversaturation just makes the limited number of color palettes more pronounced. Even more when the shading is all wrong, like with the original tree of Alisia Dragoon or the original colors of Ken and Ryu in SFII SCE.
Oversaturation also makes some art details harder to see, as Pyron's hack of Castlevania Bloodlines showed tremendously.
About the overly negative comments every now and then, I have a very straightforward solution to you guys: go play the original versions and be happy with them.
If you like oversaturated colors, anemic skins, prefer higher color counts/more diverse color usage instead of proper shading and don't like to mess with the original art of a game, heck, just stick to the original versions; these color hacks aren't for your tastes./rant
I liked the test, Pyron and I'm glad you picked this game to work on. Not the direction I took obviously but still much better than the original and it should bring out all the sprites on the level well.
I was using some Treasure games as reference when I did my suggestion, thinking the first area should be warm and inviting like in Gunstar Heroes or Sonic. It would be interesting to see how close to mine you could get with the grass and enemies but if more people like your test then that's cool. I was a more faithful to the original tone of the rest of the game.

Looking good. Let's move on to the next stage ;-)
