Gabriel Pyron's Color Hacks!!! (Golden Axe, Street Fighter II, Final Fight CD, etc)

\ o / so much confusion here ... Let me try to explain a little better.

I'm actually doing this for months, I started and never stopped. When I started putting things in RHNT I had several things ready. Previously I only shared with close friends and then started to show this work in two Brazilian forums I participate. After a friend gave the suggestion to share the work in RHNT because he thought the result was really good.

So I put my first project (streets of Rage 2) there that was just for testing and learning. It was at this time that I began to have contact with other people who appreciate what I do. Out of nowhere it started raining private messages because someone posted this hack in RetroCollect http://www.retrocollect.com/News/str...ega-drive.html

I revised it's what I had done and started putting all there. When I finished doing the patch for SF2SCE received a Message from Barone with generous words, He also said he had created a topic here. Until then I only read what was here but did not participate, and since then polishing the games came in a participatory way with you. In the case of the bloodlines was more intense because I wanted to finish but I put aside other duties that I had to do in his personal life. So I need a break to organize things, but soon I'm back. So in the meantime enjoy these games and are making a vote among you for the next game (Must be unique to MD).

I think GameArts failed pretty hard with their palettes of Lunar: the Silver Star and Alisia Dragoon. I hear they used some weird palette system where they had 3 sprite palettes and 1 background palette or something like that.

Alisia Dragoon should really be the next, awesome game with ugly colours.

It looks a lot better on a crappy TV, but on an emulator (or RGB), ugh...

Alisia Dragoon has my vote as well.

All these awesome hacks are going to make me get an Everdrive sooner than I expected, Pyron should get a commission.

My vote is for Contra HardCorps. It's an amazing coded game but many of scenaries uses very ugly colors IMO.

My vote is for Pyron have profits with his work.
If has no problem with copyrighted related, a kickstarter campaign as already suggested would be a excellent way to compensate his work. I would support!
By the way, after him take a break, Alisia Dragoon for the next!

Meh, he's just distributing the patch. Shouldn't be a copyright concern. But yeah, he needs a page for his works, and a paypal donation button. I'm hoping he's caught the hacking bug and will do/learn more advance stuffs (tile/sprite decompression, etc). The Genesis/MD scene is sorely lacking in this area IMO. Kickstarter might be a bit much, unless he's doing something really advance or time consuming (aka any number of JRPGs that need translations).

My vote is for Cadash.
I would focus on arcade ports, not on games like Contra that will end in arbitrary color choices.

I agree with a Paypal donation button. He's doing a great service for the community.

I think nowadays the best system to help a creator of diverse content is Patreon.
Everyone has adopted this system and it seems that is going very well.

I wish someone would do for PCE what Pyron is doing for the Genesis. For a system with so many on screen colors and subpallets, there are a lot of games that look ugly colorwise (Strider!). Some color hacks would be awesome!
So, how is Rockman PCE moving along, Tom?

Years ago, I started to do that to Strider for PCE - fix the palettes. The palette conversion is a mess in that game. There are actually unused colors on the sprites; unique colors on the sprite itself that don't show through because the subpalette just has redundant colors in the list. I was able to pull some more colors out of the enemies simply by fixing the subpalettes. But anyway, there are other things wrong with it - that I just stopped (used to have an old post with pics over at PCFX forums). Rockman is on hold (PC tower and stuff is in storage, I'm out of town for the summer. When I get back, start school, and get situated with a new place - then I'll resume work on it). For now, I just got my laptop and summer homebrew project to work on.

Meh, Genesis scene needs some love. It doesn't get enough, considering how popular it is. Especially translation hacks. The Genesis is a nice clean architecture - unlike both the NES and SNES. 68k is a breeze, linear addressing modes make rom expansion even easier, etc. I'm not sure why hackers aren't doing more with it. And it's popular to boot, too.

Heh. I'll have to check that out. You really made Bloodlines much better looking. It still has its flaws graphically, IMO, but it looks much better. The palette choices before, looked like NES stuff ;>_> That, and I always hated how Guile's stage looked in SF2SCE (that fix made my day). I'll send a few bucks your way when I get a chance. Who is not a fan of everdrive a friend found a cool alternative.
This seller here pass any game that exists in "rom" for a physical cartridge.
And it only costs $ 10, then who want to add these hacks on your shelf with your collection this is the way.

I'll definitely become a soldier, sergeant or maybe captain if you finish up the Rent A Hero translation patch a guy on RHDN almost completed. Not that I know if you can do that kind of hacking, but the thought came to my mind after reading tomaitheous' post.

I just played through Golden Axe with your hack. What can I say, the game looks much better now. It was really an enjoyable experience :).

rent a hero is a game I would love to play to the end on my own mega drive.
But translation is not my thing, especially when it comes to a game completely in Japanese.
I think efforts are lacking in this area for the beloved Mega Drive since SNES has translated into dozens of languages ​​all games.

The game is already completely translated and hacked, but there are some errors in the hack making it unplayable, for example on a screen where you are supposed to enter the subway all buttons do "cancel", making it impossible to take the train.

On romhacking, there are: 31 MD translations, 358 NES translations, and 256 SNES translations.

I think you can just chalk that up to the fact that many fan translators are Squeenix loving Japanophiles. Many of the left in Japan MD games are just one-offs and games that have no pedigree, usually from non-huge at the time studios.

You can probably expect another 4-5 dozen Chrono Trigger/FF retranslations before any of these guys looks at a MD game

When you look at what's actually completed though, Genesis loses 7, though it looks like Advanced Military Commander can be played all the way through, NES loses 93, and SNES loses 117, though, again, something like Romancing Saga 3 won't show up on the fully playable list.

I don't know about Square/Enix(they were separate at this point), rather than that they're just RPGeeks in general. You notice Rent-A-Hero had that kind of progress made, but no one was ever in the middle of translating a fun game, like Honoo no Toukyuuji Dodge Danpei.

Even if you take out incomplete translations, the NES and SNES still outdo the MD. I just used Sqeenix as an example, but the SNES and NES are seen as two of the quintessential RPG platforms because they had the support of the big name publishers that are still around today, in one form or another.

It doesn't matter how good of an RPG Telenet or Sega themselves or whoever made for the MD, if people don't see something familiar they'll just ignore it.

So, now you have your neckbeards with no life distractions and plenty of spare time who take it upon themselves to fix that Chrono Trigger or FF3 script that "wasn't quite right".

I think Woolsey did a damn good job, all things considered. He had 1-3 months for each project, with '90's tools, while working in naming conventions for characters that can be named/renamed, and making the script work for an English speaking audience.

Let's see any fan translation come out half as well with any of those impositions, plus someone telling them they can't allow this, or that, to be in the script/graphics, like bar's, or religious implications/imagery.

They look pretty good, but when I set to posterize this one: http://i.imgur.com/26Fwo0v.png , the colors weren't MD legal/9bit range. Didn't check the others.

As I said only the rank screen was converted to MD colors so far. Thanks for checking them out though.

I guess the genesis was dis criminated against like console racism by developers, I still convinced konami and Capcom were just lazy, putting more effort into snes games, and I was a snes owner

Ohh, I must have missed that part. But.. why would you post a set of images outside the MD 9bit color range? I mean, in relation to 'fixing MD games' and color.

It's a lot quicker to work that way and it wasn't a problem for Pyron when doing Bloodlines. When you have an 'ideal' of what you want to do you can then approximate that with the MD palette and tweak it around while having a reference to compare to.

I agree with Alianger and for what I could understand he was just trying to provide samples based on the original art (by Gainax). And they look great for the most part!
If Pyron can't match the exact same colors, at least he already has something to work with.

But honestly, I think that I not deserve any special credits. I consider my contribution (if any) very minimal. For my is enough that you let us participate with opinions while you do your hacks. It is very fun and exciting! Maybe a votation can decide next game or even better you can choice the game for yourself! It looks like your choice of games which need fix are good :p
