Pyrone, you are doing a great job specially with Street Fighter II and Golden Axe 2. Changing the colors of one sprite or one background is a piece of cake but changing a whole game is a lot of work. I have lots of mock-up screens of Castlevania and other games that I can share with you.
Thanks RedAngel!
Share your screen, it will be help alot
Any chance you could make the water a bit more greenish? I always disliked how the game used pure blue for it.
Your changes are all pretty big improvements I gotta say, and these were already the best looking stages in the game. Can't wait to see what you do with the others!
I'd like to do the same again, but I've being working all day long and also moved to a different place in São Paulo, so I don't have a computer at home this week. Sorry.
During the weekend I'll be able to help you again.
Wow, it looks A LOT better than the original. Keep up the good work!
Yep. It kinda annoys me too, let's see if Pyron has room for some changes there.
I like the blue. Seems very "MD"-ish too me. Doubt it can be made greener due to the colors shared with the background ?
It's very NES-ish actually:

We're asking for something more in the lines of a proper 16-bit Castlevania (X68000) or the greatest Castlevania game of all time (PCE CD) IMO:

IDK if it's possible to use a greener tone and if it would look better than the actual version, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try, right?
You've done some great work here Pyron.
Have some rep:)
To be fair, Rondo uses a lot of "pure blue" water too, but when it does it usually has very nice gradients. The MD version is flat, so changing the colour is the only option (even the NES water has better gradients... yeesh). A lighter blue would also work, it doesn't have to be greener though I prefer greener like Barone's examples.
Indeed. Look at the brick walls in the background, those seem to share the same blue as the water. Which means turning the water more greenish would also make the brick wall greenish. That's the tricky part with color hacking, you can just change values, but not change where a palette entry is used.
So... i take a look on water segment in stage 1
its a big big stage...
so tell me what you think guys ?

Its the best green tone i can get... i think
*PS: i didnt change the water demons cuz for me they looking good
As everyone suspected the wall and the water use the same palette, but it has some shades that become more apparent in water because they are used more abundantly so I tried to do a trick here and there.
The shades of blue you notice more in the water are just the reflection of the scenario that became more apparent now. I can not do much better than that ... or just leave it as the original.
Can't you use some brighter tones of blue in both? That will probably make it better and everybody will be happy (I hope so).
Thanks for trying the greener approach though.
In this specific case it is very difficult to improve the water. I would change other parts:
Is it not possible to change the water AND the wall? I mean its supposed to be a slimy basement/sewer kinda level after all.
Hell, Even the splashes of water that the monsters create are greenish.
Exactly, so I did not change the original in the first instance.
They also try leaving a lighter background to change something specific does not really work, because the background scenery just getting clearer that the foreground elements destroying the depth of the scene.
Personally, I love the dark green version you made. It's supposed be a sewerish type of place.
I think the monsters would look better orange+murky green than red+strong green, but that's just a personal preference (I mostly avoid pure colours on my own art). They look fine as they are.
yes, i changed. I post some screens, but you have to understand that I have no way to achieve that bright green water as examples of those pictures that you have posted without ruining the whole background. Another thing is that I said at the beginning, do not want the game lose the original macabre tone.
The original blue water is better, definitely.
If it was "definitely" better people wouldn't be asking to change it.
hahaha you guys are hard to please but I have to continue or I'll never finish this game and I'm still in the middle of the first stage = D
I really liked that combination of water, well now you can differentiate it from the background scenery, and leave the most apparent effects of reflexes, as many have said something even dirtier looks like sewage. So I would like to keep it that way if you are not against.
I walked a little more, what do you think of makeup?

Good work, that is one of those backgrounds I find especially revolting in the original.
Trying hard...
the last part of firts stage.... is very complicated

Wow, its looking better than i tought posible. Great job again Pyron!
After Pyron is done with the color hack, we have to get Stef to add pcm samples to the soundtrack (DRUMS!), like he is trying improving the ones in SF2SCE, and then Bloodlines will become amazing!
I'm pretty upset because I could not change that beautiful sky of the second stage.
I've tried everything change something that uses shadow palette highlight destroys the game.
tried any way around the problem but no way .. so .. this part will look like the original ..
Am I the only one not to like the greenish tint in this section?
http://i.imgur.com/1HOOilD.png
I actually prefer it the old way. The green doesn't get well with the rust, IMO.
Everything else is a definitive improvement.
I did a lighter version 8 years ago (boy we are getting old :?) The problem with Castlevania and also with Contra the Hard Corps is that both games need a complete color modification but at the same time you have to try to respect the overall feel of the game (dark, muddy, oppresive or whatever). Pyrone, what do you think about the colors in Contra HC?
http://i.imgur.com/TLO7M66.gif?1
I think it works now ;)
I like your skeletons more RedAngel, Pyron's blend a bit too much into the background (green on top of green). I like his other colour choices more though since they're darker.
Someone should do a Kickstarter, so you two could each pick some games and get payed to improve the colours :p.
OMG 8 years ago? I met this mod late last year and found it pretty cool, you could have done would be one less game to try to improve = D
About ContraHC I think he is much better optimized and the look is sensational. I really like that dark look, the problem is that the game is unbalanced.
While some stages are amazing as others like the forest seem an old and rudimentary game so badly done.
As the game is very large it seems they divided the teams to make the stages and the results that a good portion of them was crap. So have space for much improvement.
Another game is Sparkster1, despite being beautiful colors are very washed in my opinion. He could use brighter colors like sonic games.
