The cap in the model 1 oXboxes is a common failure (along with some of the DVD drives). Depending on the version, you can just clean up the mess and remove it I believe. The only thing it affects is the ability for the system to save the time/date settings for a bit when unplugged.
The model 1 360 was notorious for the RROD. My launch 360 went well without a hitch for years. I upgraded to an elite with HDMI and gave my old one to my brother. It lasted several years after that for him with 2 cats, 3 kids, 2 moves, and a dog.
So sometimes you get lucky with "bad" systems.
The system I've had the most issues with is the wii u (can see my posts on that here).
My classic consoles (cart based) have always been pretty reliable. I take care of my stuff and don't throw it around or otherwise abuse it.

has anyone here played transport tycoon, a friend once showed me it and I thought just by the name yeah that sounds fun, but truly a retro game classic

Pretty much; there's just so much good stuff from the 90s that I haven't played yet. I do play 'indie' games occasionally though.
