I have the first on Xbox. I also got the PC version but as an Ubuntu user, I can't get it running with WINE.

Because The Sims is awful and an insult to Maxis. The Sims was basically the smart phone casual flash game phenomenon with a Y2K spin.

It shouldn't really be approached like a traditional game. It's a toy that's fun to mess around with for a while and it's certainly not for everyone. In its time it was a different spin on the life-simulator and it was pretty original so I think it's kind of cynical to compare it to all the bland, samey social games of today.

If there's one aspect of The Sims that's truly worth hating on it's the endless stream of expansion content that they shoveled out at absurd prices. This is probably the worst part of its legacy that has spilled over into the DLC abuses of today. It must suck pretty bad to be one of those people that spent hundreds of dollars on all the Sims 2 expansions only to reach the day where it's all being given out for free.

I'm more of a fan of the original.

Bit harsh don't you think? Sim City wasn't much of a game at face value either, but people seemed to enjoy it for what it was
