I've heard alot of people use this as a insult of late. But I don't know why. Is is supposed to be insulting? To be knowledgeable in a field you enjoy? I really don't get it. If someone called me one, I'd be proud.

Its people who have no character of their own who berate those whom are truly in touch with that in which they deem worthy of
the time they have on this earth.
Let them cling to their pathetic existence of the fleeting feeling of sacrificing their self in order to fit in with others who are as lost
as they.
Be yourself and all will always be right within.
Don't be fooled into believing you are what they have characterized you as.
You must believe and know that you are much much more than just that.
You are proud of who you are, they don't even know who they are.
A truly fitting post 777.
These are my words, but not.
Mystery of mysteries.
I still thinks geeks are lame.
I am a dork.

We know.
The only person who can get away with saying anything like like that to my face is my wife.
Although I fit the bill, I must say, I am also a martial arts geek/nerd/dork/expert.
I have no problem cheating the "code" and whipping a bigmouths ass.
I like video games, computers, comic books, toys, cards, reptiles, real swords(not that cheap replica crap), feudal weapons,
guns, knives,and automobiles.
If any one of these makes me less of a man, prove it.
Keep in mind it's pointless to try.
chics love nerds

^Good, 'cause that's pretty much all of us :p.
Being Sega fans just makes us nerds that are against the grain(of other nerds).
If I get called a geek/nerd whatever, I congratulate the person on their observation skillz. Tends to shut them up.
I'm 33... I'm just set in my ways. =P
i dont concider it an insult.
That's not a nerd,
Its a whore who found some glasses.
Girls love nerds.

guess which kind
The kind with money.
People love to claim they are nerds, but the real nerds can be a sad thing indeed. The kids with the Buddy Holly glasses and pocket protectors are just hipsters 98% of the time, the real nerds act like the comic book guy on the Simpsons and it's painful.
^
Worst post.......ever.
no its quite good and different, the op has a point, why are people who like computers/video games considered nerds and geeks and yet the cool guys are the trolls who make them nerds and geeks by oppressing them so they cant leave the house just because they don't look right, why cant guys go to the park and discuss retro gaming instead of guys sitting down talking about how to clean out your cars exhaust
infact I would say my post about bullying was poor as it made people express their inner feelings and guys don't do that.......do we
It was a joke.
By the way,
You don't know the difference between a "Thread" and a "Post" on an internet "Forum", do you?
^This. I know a pretty diverse bunch of people. There's ones who like Marvel movies/comics/some anime/games that are what society calls geeks and others who like D&D, MtG, weirdo anime, don't shower or get haircuts, and have no idea how to interact with someone who isn't just like them. There's few people I know who I feel as bad for as the latter group.
You know, liking things like old video games doesn't put a "punch me" sign on your face. I like things like that and so do my friends. The point is sometimes you have to meet society halfway if you want a social life. That means making an effort to fit in. If you go around acting like That Which Has No Life, you're going to have a rough time of it. Everyone had problems when they were a kid. Don't let it dictate who you grow up into.Quote:

LOL I'M A NERD!
Weird world.
there is literally no such thing as "nerd/geek oppression"
a bunch of guys heading towards games workshop gave me dirty looks because of the way i look and what music i had playing at the time.
you know why people don't like nerds and geeks? because you're all assholes. thats why.
That is true, but what i'm saying is..
If most nerds/geeks could resist the urge to assume everyone is a stupid airhead because their IQ doesn't top 170 or they don't know C++, and bothered to take the time to develop some social skills, they might get on a bit better. I play a lot of games (..duh?) and I have 'geeky' friends who are a bit like this, and I can understand sometimes why they struggle socially.
I mean I don't really care that some neckbeards think i'm a faggot or whatever, but i'd say this is half the reason geeks get outcasted, they can be pretentious as all buggery.
this is REALLY going to annoy you, but in a geek way, nerds are clever ones like A level kids and people like me geeks so I was told in school, looks like a nerd ie glasses, ugly, unfashionable
I had a friend and his friend is now semi famous who was exactly as you describe, he used to look down on me because he thought I was thick, but I would say he oddly was social able but just a up himself person, my own friend was the same, he was startrek nerd, thought because he knew something that was nothing ie knowledge he was clever, but its not knowledge its how you use it that makes you clever
I don't get it. What's appealing about ugly glasses and drab clothing? And how do vinyl records and old video games factor in?
I suppose it's the modern equivalent of these from the hot rod days. People used them just because they looked cool and were old and unwanted.
