Damn... He was one of my favorite comedians.
R.I.P.
Yeah, just heard about that too. Apparent suicide so far. What a shame. :(
This is insanely tragic news. Robin Williams was my idol growing up. From Mork and Mindy to the Popeye movie. The guy was a genius. Stress can be a real life threatening burden. But why did he have to kill himself? Not trying to judge the man, but with all the talent, the riches, and fame why kill yourself? Hopefully the alleged suicide will be disproven.
why not ask cobain the same thing ?
some times no matter the riches the fame and the talent cant fix the unhappines in somebodies head and then they are driven to do terrible things
depression or the like cant be fixed by oh well you got a lot of money be happy
and so far 2014 ha sbeen absolutley brutal for 80's and 90's icons
Yeah cause Autoerotic Asphyxiation is such a more honorable way to go right?
A shame really. I really liked his work.
If he committed suicide, i don't think anyone have a right to judge him; just goes to show that we live in a very shallow society. You can have money, fame,a bunch of crap and a lot of "followers" and "friends" - stuff that's always advertised as being essential for you to be happy, to have success - and still feel miserable and lonely.
Well this outright sucks.
I've always been a fan of Robin Williams. From his stand up performances, to his acting, and how much the guy could improve on just about any topic and turn it into something funny. I don't know what it was that drove him to this point, but the world of comedy just lost yet another big star in its universe.
R.I.P Robin Williams, and thanks for the many, many laughs.
:(
Every time I hear terrible news like this I always think, why couldn't it have been Larry the cable guy or Adam Sandler? Fuck you god.
Depression can do a number on you and is one of the most common causes of suicide. You can be living a good life one minute and the next it's either gone or ruined. Depression can be caused by any number of things in your life. I can't judge him. All I can say if people knew he was depressed or suicidal they should have gotten him help but you don't know if that was the case at all. It's not your place to judge anyone really.
I remember watching most of Robin Williams movies growing up and his stand up comedy which was pretty good for the most part.
I don't know if i understood you correctly, but i didn't judged anyone in my comment.
I said that people are always shocked when a famous person it's depressed, commits suicide or have problem with ( legal or illegal ) drugs, etc. because they think that they have " everything " that society preaches to be achieved, which most times are very shallow things.
This guy will always be a genius in my book.
Tons of good childhood memories related to his outstanding work.
"Goooooooooood Morning Vietnam!!!!!"
Damn... Sad days we live now.
he didn't realise how much he makes people happy just by the mention of his name
There has been very few times in my life that I've felt the world stops for a minute after a tragedy. This is one of those times :rip:
I know you didn't judge anyone. Just expanding on what was said.
Just to expand on it more for those that are interested in knowing a little more:
I know for a fact fame can destroy people or cause them misery they would of never otherwise experience had they had a normal life. I know how money can corrupt the ones with the most and make them greedy or downright evil or choose to give back to those that need it most because they got everything in life they needed and how ones with the least will either struggle miserably or make the most of it depending on how it affects them. Everybody is different and no two people have the same exact needs. I know how a family can make or ruin someone's life. Or how friends can guide you to positive healthy decisions or destroy you through influencing bad behavior or poor choices. In fact most people should realize celebrities are people, too instead of thinking of them as perfect little angels that can do no wrong. Bad things happen to celebrities all the time, their lives are far from perfect and in no way required to share their miserable experiences with you nor do most want to deal with the pressures of being a role model for kids when it's the parent's job in the first place and not theirs to be raising your kids.
He was an hero... :(
Most celebrity deaths don't affect me much, as I don't really care that much about famous people (even if I like their work). I figure people die every day and no one cares all that much about them; why treat celebrities any differently? They're still basically strangers.
Robin Williams' death is different for me, though. I grew up with Robin Williams, watching him on tv as a kid and growing up watching his incredibly varied movies. Pretty much every part of my life is marked with something he did. It makes me sad that he killed himself, but that doesn't undo the years of joy he gave people.
RIP, Robin Williams.
depression is a strange thing as you can be depressed for no reason at all, like a toothache but on the brain, at least with a tooth you can extract it, there's no cure for depression and if everyone else sees colour you see black and white, a bit like owning a Phillips cdi while everyone else owns a saturn
This is most unfortunate. He's been an iconic comedian/actor throughout my lifetime, so it is a saddening that the ride is over. Although I liked his comedy, I'll remember him most for his dramatic roles (The Fisher King, Awakenings, and Good Will Hunting instantly come to mind).
R.I.P
Damn, rest in peace Mrs. Doubtfire.
I guess he heard that Stallone wants him in "The Expendables 4" and took the easy way out.
Depression is the nastiest of the silent killers. Just goes to show the things our society values as "success" are as far from happiness as can be.
Rest in peace Robin Williams.
Eh, yes and no. I mean. Success isn't the same for everyone to be sure. But it's not really about Success =/= happiness as it about depression making it all meaningless to a person.
You can have everything you personally ever wanted, an idyllic life, nothing you ever need to worry about ever, lots of people who care, etc. But if you're depressed, none of that will really seem to matter.
Something that can be a triviality to you any other day could hit you like a truck and just seem to shatter your whole world.
I've been there a few times myself. And what modelboard4 wrote is one of the most accurate ways to sum it up, even if it doesn't really get into the depth that it can be an issue, especially if you are good at hiding it, or surrounded by people that can't/won't really help.
No, see, thing is, success has absolutely no correlation to happiness at all. It makes you feel "happy" when you achieve it, and "protects" you from some of the negative self talk you might suffer otherwise, but it won't make you happy.
Some people are just happy by nature even if they're poor or suffer from a serious illness, some people are depressed regardless of an awesome life.
There are worthless slobs everywhere that are happier than the most successful people in the world, there's no correlation.
I had no idea so many people were so enthralled with Robin Williams.
Always (usually) is a damn shame when someone takes their own life. But I can't remember the last time I heard or read anyone mention Robin Williams. Now he's like everyone's favorite comic.
I wouldn't say there is no correlation, I mean I would certainly say people of reasonable means are far happier than those who are destitute for example.
Success, even in moderation, does a heck of a lot more than insulate you from some negative things. When compared to someone who is destitute it's the difference between scrounging in a garbage can in the hopes for a meal and having food on your table every day of the week.
It certainly gets trickier when you talk about being very successful. But I'd still wager that the average millionaire/billionaire is far happier than the average person on foodstamps. Is it true in every situation? Of course not.
That one outlier who is happy with literally nothing doesn't suddenly make the millions of people worldwide in the same kind of situation happy, just as the unhappy billionaire doesn't drag down those of his peers who are quite happy with their lives.
And that's a completely different/independent from people who are outright depressed.
He hasn't really been in anything all that major recently. For sure there were many that derided him. His comedic style isn't exactly for everyone and got on many peoples nerves. But those people are mostly going to be quiet for awhile, and those who enjoyed his work will simply express how much they enjoyed him and his work and mourn his loss.
I liked the guy, he actually could do some pretty good dramatic work as well as the completely zany and off the wall comedy he's more well known for.
It's a shame as he was so young relatively speaking. He could have had decades more of interesting roles ahead of him, both dramatic and comedic.
Comparing a millionaire with someone that's struggling to survive every day = reductio ad absurdum. Having a stable life isn't what I'm arguing as success, it's baseline.
If you were to take a random sampling of millionaires and regular folk, I'd probably argue the millionaires would be happier in general, but not because success brought them happiness, it's the other way around. Not having to battle depression and self-doubt gave them the strength to succeed.
Replace the word "correlation" with "causation" in my post, it's more appropriate.
My friend texted me the news last night. He never struck me as the type to take his own life, but he's a good actor after all. A shame that we've again lost someone who brought joy to a lot of people.
You should have noticed that I did not compare a millionaire with someone struggling to survive. I said even someone with modest success (IE: your average middle class, or even upper lower class). You yourself mentioned how some without any real means are happy. I simply stated that is as much an outlier as a millionaire who is completely unhappy with life.
And not everyone who is unhappy is suffering from depression. They are not the same thing. A great many people are unsuccessful, not all of them are battling depression and self doubt.
That's the thing. Depression can be sudden, or it can be an insidious little bastard that just works its way into your life. He was an actor, and he's been in the media for a damn long time. I'm sure he tried to keep a lot of it out of the public. Either he battled it very privately, or it just never made "major news" until now. Either way, it's a shame.
I'd have to wonder if he was seeking help, or if anyone close had any real idea that it was this bad. I'm sure there will be plenty of news about it off and on over the next few months, but it's hard to really know for sure what's real and what's just PR after the fact.
I just read it here...
Honestly, I am shocked. He was a phenomenal actor, although he did often pick lame roles. But when he was in a good movie, he shined. The way hisexpression could change from his trademark smile to sadness or shock... just great. Kind of ironic looking at his struggle for thesoul of his suicidal wife in "Whar Dreams May Come" now... :(
Err... you did, but fine, it's not really relevant to the discussion anyway.
I never argued they were.
Correct, there's no relation what so ever.
As someone with both a mother and a girlfriend that have gone through depression (the diagnosed kind), I'm pretty familiar with it.
I find funny the way you're describing it.
Depression is a bad joke as far as medicine goes. Not that's it not serious, it is, I mean in the way it's spoken of and diagnosed. Same goes for most "modern" mental illnesses (that is, conditions that only recently have been considered as an illness). Stuff like ADHD, OCD, blah blah.
Causes? Vague suppositions.
Symptoms? A jumbled inconclusive mess.
Treatment? Wild guesses.
You can treat depression by yourself, with the help of a psychologist, or through drugs. It varies immensely from person to person because nobody (including doctors) has actually any idea what depression is nor can they accurately diagnose it.
Chemical unbalance in the brain they say. Well yeah, a state you can easily induce through mere thought. Is a person depressed because they're miserable or are they miserable because they're depressed? Nobody really knows because nothing is properly defined. The symptom is confused with the disease. That's the current state of things.
Part of it depends on your age. I grew up watching Williams on tv. The only other actor/entertainer who started on tv and entered my childhood at an early age, then went on to continually do movies, is Tom Hanks. Maybe Steve Martin too. During my "formative years", through my teens and 20s, Williams made some great and interesting movies. Moscow on the Hudson, Survivor, World According to Garp, Good Morning Vietnam, Awakening, and even Popeye, he did a lot of movies that were an indelible part of my youth. Were I born 10 years later, perhaps he wouldn't have been such a large part of my memories. He was also a standout comic at a time when stand-up comedy was at its apex.
And as others have said, Williams was known to be a pretty good guy, something that is not that common in Hollywood. I remember hearing when Christopher Reeve got in that horse accident and became paralyzed, Williams showed up in Reeve's room wearing surgical garb and cracking jokes to cheer him up. Most people wouldn't have the balls or the kind heart to do something like that. He also told Reeves he would not have to worry about medical bills.
Sad that a guy who made a lot of people laugh and was genuinely decent was so sad he ended his own life. And a waste too.
