All valid criticisms. Mark has fallen into a pattern in his reviews and he is pretty generous as he just seems to really love games. I look at his reviews as exposure to new games (he's introduced me to some I'd never even heard of) and I get a decent feel for the games based on what he says and what he shows, but not necessarily what he likes. He does like WAY more games than I do. It's when he loves a game in a genre we both share in common that I take note. Vanquish is a good example. That game would have flown under my radar, but Mark went nuts over it, and even made it one of his top 10.

Your points make sense, though. I personally prefer this type of discussion over the other...

he champions the vectrex, cosmic carnage (...) and truxton pretty hard, i'll grant you that.

I got the point. I have some friends which also enjoy CGR for the same reasons. CGR is like a reliable "previewer" to them.
To me, I really preferred the less glorified times.
These two videos are much better than the stuff he has published in the last years IMO. And the SFII one was already well into the "empire" times IIRC:

Me too.
Like I said before, I don't hate Mark but I pretty much grew (really) tired of his CGR empire. And the video posted in this thread looks so... pointless? I mean, Mark has been in the scene for so many years, he can pull off something MUCH better than shaking around the consoles and talking common shit about them.

I think he's just a goofy guy who's having fun; that might not make for the best or most groundbreaking videos. He's a pretty lucky bastard though any way you look at it. He gets to have fun playing games that people send him, then goof around to his heart's content and make a living at it. He's living the dream.

I can't disagree with that, however, I really dislike the path he chosen for his show after some point.
I'd watch like 50 episodes of Game Sack or even 3 or 4 Retro Sunday (and the likes) videos prior to watch anything from CGR.
That's how pointless it's to me now. Anyway, I think I'm pretty much done with this discussion now.

Oh, it must take quite a fair amount of effort! He has to review a lot of games, and even if it is too bad that he obviously often doesn't get far into them, he has a new review almost every day! That's a huge amount of games to play and make videos of. And he's consistently funny in those videos, too. It can't be as easy as you suggest.

As far as "more powerful" goes, Genesis is the winner. Why? It handles more than what the SNES can. More sprites on screen (Gunstar Heroes, 2 players, expert. Literally things littering the screen at all times, not to mention the bosses), and bigger sprites too (Streets of Rage 2, 2 players, mania. Good luck with stage 7's elevator section), 3D without extra help (Star Cruiser, ResQ).

Mark would be a nobody? Perhaps to gaming fans, but did you know that after the original Game Room in the late '90s and before he started up Classic Game Room again, he was a documentary filmmaker? I've seen one of his films, about Westinghouse. It's good. So no, I'm sure he'd have a successful documentary or video production career without CGR.

Also of course, your continual disregard for the concept of fair use is incredibly, incredibly disturbing. The idea that a company should be able to block people from monetizing footage of videogames in reviews, which people are talking over, etc, is utterly absurd! A videogame is not a movie. Every game play experience is different. Game footage is a clearcut case of fair use.

That's what I was thinking too. Maybe I don't frequent enough other forums, but the attitudes have seemed to have gotten fairly polarized here - to the point of a fair amount of negativity.




For what it's worth, I've only watched a few episodes of his. I was entertained. Yeah, there's wasn't a lot of actual content in the review - but honestly I don't care. His vids come off as a light hearted tour about a game. No harm, no foul. I also don't see why people get so upset/worked up about him, or anyone else, receiving stuff from fans. Who cares what other people do with their stuff. If they give it away, smash it, sell it, hoard it, whatever - it's theirs. Stop worrying about shit that's not yours.

I'm not really a fan of CGR, but I'll watch a random episode for entertainment. Same for Game Sack (though I am a fan of them), I'm watching it for the entertainment as well. I might see a game that I haven't noticed before (for any retro game review/show/etc) or didn't give it a second look. Guess what? I'll do the search myself. I don't need a complete in depth review. I'll play test it on emulators. If I have the funds, I'll buy it (else, flash card/whatever). If you're a retro gamer like I am, then you've probably played all the A list titles, B list titles, and most C list titles for the system(s). There's not much left that's new. Take the time to explore the game yourself; that's your reward. Be more forgiving (of everything; every category of the game) and try to enjoy it - try to finish it. Anyway, now I'm just rambling on. I guess we all have our own pet peeves. It just seems like CGR is a pretty cool guy and never expected there to be so much hate towards him.


That said.. I haven't watched this video :P I'm not really interested in the system VS videos. They've been done to death, usually piss people off, and are a feeding ground for system arguments (I know I've had my fair share of battles...meh).

I don't think they're meant to have much intellectual value. They're fluff. In other threads, I've called his reviews more entertainment then reviews. And if you don't like his goofy humor and constant Sega/Atari/Vectrex references, then yeah, there's not much there for you to see. I find it entertaining though.

After all of the negativity, self promotion, and hyper criticism of video game forums (especially this one lately) I find the occasional CGR refreshing and amusing. Systematic and exhaustive reviews have their place, but so do simple promotional presentations that bridge the gap between old advertising and modern enthusiasm.
