I'm pretty sure the whole laughing thing a way to deal with the emotional baggage of living in Spira. It was a pretty shitty place to live with sin running around destroying everything.
I'm with you on that.
The game seems to get a lot of backlash here, because it's a bit over-rated as a game. I was looking forward to FFVII, because I really enjoyed FFII and FFIII (US) on the SNES and considered them to some of the most enjoyable RPGs I'd ever played. There's a lot of stuff going on with FFVII that I didn't like, but the story wasn't one of them.
FFVII is a two-sided coin. On one side, there is the big tittied Tifa, the mini games, the low difficulty, the special effects, the FMV etc. On the other side, there is a deep story, beautiful music, lots of sidequests, a great variety of scenery and very well planned scenarios. It's the latter which makes it a great game. And if you remove that side of the coin, you get the PS2 and PS3 entries in the series. Perhaps cheaper and easier for the devs to do, but the broad masses prefer the first side of the coin, so that's why it sells.
I really liked the FF7 minigames. I think Super Mario RPG set the stage for that. But they didn't keep up interesting minigames after that.
Yeah, there is nothing wrong with those, they did it right with that game. But they clearly overdid it with FFX-2 on that matter.
It's a shame that people can be too snooty* to sit back and enjoy FFVII and its sci-fi fantasy world. It's like it's 2002 again and the FFVI vs. FFVII arguments are still relevant.
*hard words but I mean them! :D
I'm not sooty. I keep trying and I just can't get into and I love RPG's. I try every year or so and I never get that far. It just falls flat for me. I won't tell others its not a bad game or bother making yet another "Overrated thread" There are far to many people who love it for that, I'm just not one of them.
I didn't like Chrono Trigger either. It wasn't until 2008 when I got back into old games that I gave RPGs a tried. Unfortunately I haven't enjoyed any of them so really nothing against Chrono Trigger.
I actually liked the Story in VIII better in a general sense. It's just they kinda went off the rails with it and left so many unresolved plot issues/holes around. It coulda been a contenda!
The characters were a mixed bag however. I think 7 had an overall better cast, but VIII wouldn't have been too bad... but Seifer was a pretty lame sephy wannabe, and it was obvious they were going for that. Edea was interesting, but then she wound up not even being a villain... so pretty much crapped that one out.
All in all it just needed a few tweaks and cuts to really pull it all together into a really good game. I also loved the card game in VIII a hell of a lot. I think I played that more than any minigame in any other ff game.
Heh, just finished this today. Has to be near the 12th time since '96.
Surprising that some of you gave up at 2300, since as mentioned before, it's a major turning point for where the game is going. Also, before you leave, you pick up a character that can basically be made the top tier character of the game. That takes a lot of beforehand knowledge, but still.
Something that really stands out is that, for a JRPG, your choices sometimes actually have consequences. You must have seen that during one of the scenes after returning to the present. Shortly afterward you have the chance to rescue someone. If you choose to do so, the next time you can visit the nearby market, they give you 10 free MP restoration items. I'm not sure if one of the side quests is dependent on this later on, or not, but you can advise someone to plant or burn a sapling. If it does correspond, it may be impossible to play the side quest, which leads to a very interesting scene where the characters ponder what they're doing. Hell, the end game itself opens up, and allows you to tackle what's left in any order you want. Then there's that really ballsy story thing they did just before the end game stuff, that you don't even have to undo, if you don't want to.
Still, it does have a couple JRPG things I don't care for. The overall general pacing of a turn based battle, and the instances of tech point farming, which are not necessary, but once you know what you want, when you want it, you kind of have to do it that specific way.
I don't know, I mean, for me, it's about as good as the (Japanese side of the)genre gets.
