Your collecting confessions/habits

I'm sure many of the forum members are into collecting. And sometimes collecting can get a bit weird.
I'll start:

I try to get the "home" version of the game I want for my collection. Japanese version for japanese games, US for US ones etc. All the JRPGs I have are in japanese. If I want to play through one I use everdrive/cd-r and play an ilegally downloaded english language version.

I am paranoid about leaking batteries so I always take them out of the carts in my collection.

If the game that I prize very much has some special or collector's edition with different cover art I try to get both normal and special editions

purchasing games I never find time to play

Every version and variant of every game for every system and region ever made...

I went insane...

And now I sell seashells by the sea shore...

Damn, you dudes are serious. I just buy games CIB and play all of them. Does that make me a collector? I don't think so because I don't care much for variants or Japanese stuff. The reason I buy CIB only though is because the art and manual are a part of the experience for me. I check out the back of the case and read through the manual before I fire that bitch up!

I stopped buying Western Genesis games long ago solely because the Japanese packaging is so much better. Exceptions exist when there is no Japanese game, and the ones which are absurdly expensive -- Comix Zone, Adventures of Batman & Robin, etc. -- I've forced myself to be content with the US version, though I know I'll swap them out one day.

Complete games only. Spine cards or bust. I regret this in hindsight, since packaging doesn't make a difference on how the game plays, just how much money you spend for the ability to play it.

I don't think my "confessions" are anything unusual, but there they are.

@Benjamin, I just realized where you were from. Are you part of that WHO DAT nation?

I am Try-to-get-all-known-sega-genesis-motherboard-revisions crazy.

I bought a European copy of Sonic 2 with the original case (no instructions) for the following reasons:

1) Just so I could say I have a game that says "Mega Drive" as opposed to Genesis on it.

2) The text on the back of the box is in multiple languages, including German (I really like that language)

Thing is, Sonic 2 wasn't optimized for PAL and I live in the US, so the game plays exactly the same as my American copy. I used to have the box and manual for my American copy, but the manual had mold on it, so I threw it and the box out, but I kept the cartridge (I disinfected it of course). I also once bought all the metal clip on pieces for a Sega CD model 2 because I felt I needed the one that attaches to the Genesis' expansion slot (even though my Sega CD Model 1 and Genesis Model 1 were fine without it).

I don't even know how many games I have at this point. Like a few hundred. If I play 5-6 hours in a week, it's a good week.
These days I spend more time hunting them down, cleaning them, fixing consoles, selling stuff on ebay than I do playing.

I really love my few hours playing though. However I have a problem gaming for very long these days because I have very dry eyes now.
Been on accutane for 5 months now and it really strains my eyes playing shmups and stuff like that.

I spent years picking up games on the cheap (~$3-15) that I enjoyed playing even for a bit or on rental back in the day. Then I started picking up games when they were cheap because I might make a video comparison one day. Most of these games sit on the shelf virtually unplayed, and I can't even imagine a decent comparison video to be made from them. Fortunately there is no reason to sell them, as they would never sell for the price I paid for them originally. Why would I put a game up on ebay and waste my time listing it, packaging it and shipping it for a buck? Multiply that by a few hundred games and I think the effort just isn't worth it.

I still don't consider myself a collector, but the amount of games on this floor to ceiling shelf and consoles in my cabinet would convince most non-collectors otherwise.

I've actually moved since then so I'm not sure, but I do think Darth Maul, Iron Man, Blade, and Snake Eyes are in that case. Right now we just moved into a new house so all of my stuff is still boxed up until I figure out how/where to display them again.

I just picked up a Model 2 VA0 at a thrift store (console only). If you don't have that one and would like it, I'll send it to ya if you pay shipping. No cost for the console, I just couldn't leave it there on that shelf. Let me know.
