They could have done what they did with the Raspberry Pi - allow people to purchase the codec licenses to enable the functionality, and maybe include them as standard with the Deluxe Wii U pack.Quote:

Wii U discs aren't actually BluRays, they're a custom Nintendo format.
Standalone players are typically better than what comes in a console anyways.

Decided to buy the 3D World bundle with bonus $50 gift card from Walmart (apparently right before they took the deal down). Well I noticed something immediately fishy when they charged me $250 + $50 for the "bonus gift card". Console showed up today and of course those cheapskates send me the preloaded console that they don't actually advertise on their site. So I drive out to the store in the next county to exchange it, and they try to give me a straight refund for the console that only shows $250 on the receipt, and claim they can't match their own price without an ad that's no longer on their own site. But I cried long enough and eventually got it taken care of. Then I went to Wendy's, and they gave me a cold sandwich. :daze:
That sucks. Hope you find a good deal on a Wii U someday, it's a good console.
Oh I still got the exchange taken care of, and have the correct bundle now. Just had to stand my ground long enough.

So after spending about $310 on a Wii U, i'd need another $60'ish for a competent DVD/Blu-ray player, and need to find the extra space on my set-up for both. My Tv only has 3 HDMI ports also, 2 of which are taken up by other devices. Guess i gotta buy an adapter to give me extra HDMI ports while i'm at it.
And it IS a Blu-Ray drive in the system. Has all the technical capability of DVD/Blu-ray IF they wanted it to.

It's strange how Sony added cheaper DVD functionality to the PS2 and cheaper Blu-Ray to the PS3. It's like they were gimmicks to get their machines into houses or something. And now it's expected out of a company that has never released anything appliance-wise except video game consoles.

This sounds like personal problems to me. With the HDMI bit, you could just do what I do. I have my BluRay Player and cable box hooked up through HDMI, leaving one more port open. So when I want to play Wii U I hook the HDMI cable into it, when I want to play my 360 I unhook the Wii U and hook the HDMI cable up to the 360. It's not like you NEED both hooked up and running at the same time, assuming that's why 3 isn't enough.Quote:

Well, this is the first time I've ever seen anyone defend the PS2's quality as a DVD player. Most people agree that it's weak. Many have also reported playing DVDs to be the apparent root of getting disc read errors on the system, as the laser has to work harder on a DVD.Quote:

Caved in and bought a Wii U for the BestBuy Black Friday sale, was an idiot and overlooked things like taxes and the exchange rate, and didn't save a single penny hahaha.
I've only played a couple of games so far:
Mario 3D World: It's literally just like the 3DS game, except for there's a cat Mario powerup. It's fun but I would have liked to have seen more, although now that I've almost got the special levels unlocked it's much better I think.
Wonderful 101: I haven't spent a lot of time with this game, but I'm enjoying it. The isometric veiw can be problematic sometimes, but it hasn't really got too much in the way yet, I've heard it gets much worse as far as that goes. The combat is really fun though, and that's why I got this game in the first place.
Super Smash Brothers: A little barebones compared to other entries in the series, but I like the variety in arcadey type modes that there are in this one.
I also have Nintendo Land and Donkey Kong, but I haven't spent too much time with them.
Never mind the Wii U not being able to play DVDs, why does Nintendo STILL refuse to include an ethernet port? The mind boggles.

Luigi U is an add on pack for SMB U. It's basically all the levels redone to be extra challenging. I think most copies of SMB U come with it already installed now.

The reality is that there have been so many options available since DVD came out, that the Wii U designers shouldn't have even wasted a single thought on movie disc playback. Especially since for the past decade, Nintendo consoles have been universally considered/marketed as secondary consoles with the assumption that most console gamers already have either a PS or Xbox as their primary system. PC gamers don't need a console that plays DVD/BR either. And if you have a surround sound system (which has always been a requirement of the real DVD experience), then there's a pretty good chance you don't need another player either.
I think the big thing with 3D World is the multiplayer. I don't think the 3DS version had that. I wouldn't say Wonderful 101 get's worse as it goes, it just gets a lot more difficult, like most games made by Platinum Games.Quote:

I had that thought about multiplayer in 3d world as well. The 3DS was the better game IMO.

Sorry but in the modern era, movie disc playing is a feature that is STANDARD for game consoles. Accept it. Every X-Box and all Playstations, except the first, could play DVDs and now blu-ray.
