Sega makes $18million loss

Sega made a ¥2 billion loss in the first half of the fiscal year after releasing just a single console game in the second quarter.

In the six month period ended September 30, 2014, Sega earned ¥154.2 billion ($1.38 billion) in revenue, down 5 per cent year-on-year. Operating profit was down 72 per cent to ¥3.45 billion ($30.9 million), and the company made an overall loss of ¥2 billion ($17.9 million).

Sega needs more cashcows, they should make an annual franchise akin to Ass Creed or CoD. It's a sad reality but Sega can't keep in shape based on Steam sales alone.

Only a few titles manage to recoup development costs in such a short amount of time. Alien Isolation is no Call of Doody.

Even their main cash cow has been damaged by years of kiddy games.

Sure, and I could be wrong, but won't the development costs already be included in the previous quarters' spendings? So if Sega makes $30 million from Alien: Isolation this month, that will bump them out of the red because it will all go into profit.

It would be so nice to go on SEGA-16 and see some good news about SEGA. Even the SEGA website has been sparse about updates.

To be fair, we just had the new Microsoft and Sony consoles launch just before that period, so the lack of releases isn't too surprising. It's just a lull in releases. If Sega was smart, it'd have an arm dedicated to small, arcade-style content to ensure a steady revenue stream via releases on older consoles, handhelds, and Steam; but Sega is dumb.

Hopefully Phantasy Star Nova will do well. I don't see the company being in any worse shape than usual.

Console and PC games isn't the bread and butter of SegaSammy, Pachinko is the main source of income.
The losses in the first half is mainly a consequence of the trouble Pachinko makers are going to have with the new gambling laws (Consumer Business underperformed though).

Overall Consumer Business (that is Console and PC games) is in the red (-17.602 Bn Yen) since Sammy acquired Sega.

In an ideal world, they would go bankrupted and their classic franchises would be purchased by the original developers (Yu Suzuki, Naka and others), whose companies would create new games and sell them on PC for half of the price of "AAA" titles.

He is not incorrect though.

Everyone has heard their parents talk about how companies used to be when they were younger. For many of us Sega, Atari, etc.., are the companies we once held in high esteem but as of late, not so much.

BTW, Alien Isolation was one hell of a game.

Times change, that's for sure. It doesn't mean Sega is irrelevant, and it's certainly strange that people actually HOPE for developers to "get vanished from the market".

Alien: Isolation, Ryu ga Gotoku, Sonic Boom, Hatsune Miku, the Shining series, the Phantasy Star series, etc. You might not like the games, and you might not like that Sega doesn't localize all of them, but they are anything but irrelevant. A shadow of their former self, though? It's hard to disagree with that.
