The system looks to be in great condition! The best VCR I ever owned was a Sony SLV-696HF HI-FI STEREO VCR! That thing was built like a tank and rarely if ever gave me any issues.
This Mitsubushi model looks interesting! I'm curious to know what features this VCR has. It's huge with lots of dials and buttons that I want to press and turn! :p
How are those late 80s S-VHS tapes holding up? Where I work, we have a lot of S-VHS tapes that were used for multichannel digital recording, and the tapes that are around 20 years old are showing some severe degradation. They are stored in a temperature controlled environment and almost never used too. I read that the maximum lifespan for VHS tapes is 20-30 years.
I have a Mitsubishi HS-U69. I got it new (and boy was it EXPENSIVE!), and it was an awesome VCR for many years. It needs some work on the heads as it eats tapes now (they all do with enough use), but cost more to repair than a new SVHS VCR (new JVC model), so it's honorably retired to the closest. :D

No, this tape eating is definitely due to the drum. After years of rubbing against the drum, it gets REALLY smooth and intermolecular adhesion causes tapes to start sticking enough to eat them. Home remedies often tell you to use fine grain sandpaper on the heads to rough them up, but that's usually not a good idea.Quote:

If the pinch wheel fails or the control head can't sense how fast to move it.
*Actually had an issue where the ribbon cable came out of the mother board with the control head, the pinch wheel spun too fast. Ate the tape. The effect is usually no sound at all (not even Hi-Fi) before enough tape is pulled out to cause a bigger issue.
If the tape sticks to the drum, it will pull out enough tape until the drum stops spinning, resulting in a totaled tape and expensive repair bill. 99.9% of all VCRs have DEW sensors so hopefully it will activate in a high humidity situation. Yeah high humidity is a very bad thing for any tape device. Some people have gotten that DEW warning before when this sensor malfunctions in low humidity conditions.
A busted or worn gear can cause issues that can be anything from a tape failing to load or eject to a tape eating episode.
If the drum fails to spin for some reason (not pretty on what might and will happen if this goes unnoticed and you think have a dirty video head at first).
If the supply reel or take up reel malfunctions. Via a bad belt or motor. A number of things can happen. From a tape eating episode to the machine shutting down.
A belt ages and goes bad. The effect? Anything the belt moves can result in a issue. Well design VCRs will shut down if this happens when loading a tape or try to compensate during play or simply shut down during playing.
*had this issue before, the machine simply shut down. Load squeaking could be heard from the machine during play (the belt was slipping bad).
Capstan motor malfunctions. (This can cause something to happen depending on the design of the deck. A VCR should shut down if the motor doesn't move during a load, during play it's anyone guess what might happen with your VCR in general).
The loading tray malfunctions or the guide rollers don't retract the tape back when ejecting, leaving a loop around the drum. A VCR should simply shut down and not eat anything and you will usually end up with a loop outside the cassette most of the time.
*Had a shitty VCR that needed to be unplugged a lot because the micro controller kept getting confused and not ejecting tapes at all. Stuck tapes where the most annoying thing in the world to deal with that damn thing.
A VCR is too lubricated or the lubricant has dried up completely. Too much can be as bad as none at all. You don't want any machine to take it swim.
The microcontroller malfunctions and causes the machine to go berserk. Never heard of it actually happening but it's possible. As I've seen and heard of everything else.
Regular maintenance and checking if the VCR is working properly will reduce the number of surprise tape eating episodes.
Don't play really old worn out tapes as the oxide will clog the heads. Unless necessary.
Don't under any circumstance play a crinkled tape or kiss the heads good-bye eventually.
From my experience because the chassis of different decks vary a bit, your mileage will vary.
I high-lighted what happened to mine. It still has the tape in it. After reading through your post, most of which I already knew but never thought of all in one sitting, I wonder how we ever got through life with VCRs. :DQuote:

Not too much usually goes wrong with optical disc players and at the moment, easily replaced for the most part. Compare to tape, DVD and Blu-ray players are god sent in how much care they actually need. It's the media that can be fragile.Quote:

Me too. Every time the BD drive in the computer breaks, I go back to playing them on my PS3. It's really irritating, but at least the PS3 has excellent player software. I've got the remote as well.Quote:

I've had the same BDP-S300 since 2008. It plays everything I throw at it, and is the only BD player in my house that will play BD-R backups without issue.

- it needed, in my opinion, some lubrication of the mechanism, and a good cleaning of the inside surface of the FL display window,
which, of course, necessitated a front bezel pull.
it now operates perfectly, though to my eye, it's playback PQ, while excellent, simply isn't as good as that of the JVC HR-S8000U.
it somehow seems grainier, and less detailed in washes of high lighting.
perhaps it is this deck's digital video processing that is at fault?
perhaps it's said processing electronics simply aren't as good as the HR-S8000U's? i dunno.
this is one SEXY VCR, in a big, brutish, manly sort of fashion, and i'm grateful to finally own one, -and such an excellent example, at that-
but i must confess i'm a little disappointed in it's raw performance,
which i was hoping would be at last at parity
with my "Class-up-the-Ass" seemingly peerless JVC HR-S8000U...

Yes, these Mitsubishi SVHS VCRs have a GREAT picture. I tended to use EP mode a lot on mine since it was still better than most regular VHS VCRs in SP mode.
Cut him some slack. I thought this post was interesting. I noticed that someone commented on the NEOGEO forum that Tasuke posted "a thread dedicated to a 26 year old VCR". Personally I see nothing wrong with that. After all, we're playing consoles that are video game consoles that are 20+ year old consoles and or video games, are we not:confused: And if people are not interested in the topic, they can simply skip it!Quote:

I got my JVC SVHS player right beside the computer. In fact, I run my Jaguar through it since I only have the RF out for the Jaguar. I run the svideo from the VCR to a SIMA color corrector, and then to the svideo input of the monitor. I watch my SVHS tapes on my monitor... and that allow my to watch my Jaguar on the monitor as well. :D

The chroma decoding looks like it is leading the luma substantially. Can that be fixed?
That's an issue with VHS video - it's using the same bandwidth on the chroma as composite or RF: .5 MHz. That means you normally only get 40 lines of color horizontally. It's the primary disadvantage RF/composite had - low color bandwidth. Svideo allowed for a higher color bandwidth, and component even more.Quote:

You can't tell from those shots since they're not the same shots as you showed for the other VCR. Always use the same shots when comparing the output from AV equipment.
