I dug a little deeper and it looks like Daytona USA CCE/CE/NetLink, Manx TT Super Bike, and Touring Car on the Saturn have no AI cars in 2 Player Splitscreen. I'd imagine Sega Rally does the same since they all use the same engine. Sonic R I know has no AI players though.

Also High Velocity and Touge King the Spirits 1 are the same game, so ignore High Velocity in my list.

I've included a lot of games so far but I haven't worked on the N64 games yet. Next update will have all its 4P split-screen games which fit in the list.

I started a list of all the 5th gen racing games a while ago, sorted by platform and release year, listing number of players each game supported and how many tracks the game has (for most titles). I got bored of the tedium partway through the Playstation section of the list, though (the PS1 has a huge number of racing games!), so the PS1 section of this list is VERY FAR from complete. The other platforms hopefully are, though. The list is of all racing games, not only multiplayer ones, but I'll just cut out all the ones that I know aren't multiplayer from the list I post below...

*Asterisks are games I own.
-Gamename for games also on other platforms (usually Playstation or PC) - not counting arcades
(-)Gamename for a game that also has identically titled version(s) on other platform(s), but the versions are significantly different.
+Gamename for a game that has been released on a newer system too (PS2, Wii Virtual Console, PS3 PSOne Classics, etc.)

Well if you want to throw single screen games in, Vatlva on the Saturn has 6 player support.

The point of this though isn't about what kind of driving game the game is. After all Barone said he's very lenient to even include flying, Snowboarding, Skiing, etc. games. It's about the technical demand to pull the splitscreen off. So both Vatlva and Micro Machines wouldn't count in this, because they're not splitscreen. It's no more demanding to do 6 or 8 player in those games than it is to do Single player.

I must say that I hadn't touch the N64 games yet because I had this hope that you'd bring some light into it. Thanks a lot.

About single screen games, I think that's another story.

I'm interested in investigating the split-screen stuff, mostly the games using driving/racing-like engines, due to the usual hardware discussions regarding these systems and also because devices like Everdrive and the upcoming PSIO and RHEA really open up the whole library of those consoles for you to play any time you want.
But sometimes it's hard to know what to play 'cause there's a lot of stuff there and you don't know all games beforehand. And especially when talking about split-screen games the whole figure is very grey IMO.

The N64 fans say that it has the edge in such regard, hands down. The PS1 fans usually point to the absolute number of games... So here's a rational way of analyzing the whole thing, even if at a superficial level at first.
I could try to go deeper and analyze how dumb or advanced the AI is in those games, how far is the draw distance, which is the frame rate, etc... That would probably be a crazy task to accomplish but first of all we need to know which games actually have split-screen modes and which of those games actually have some sort of AI in that mode.

I prefer the Saturn over the N64 and also the PS1 over the N64 as gaming platforms, but in most cases I think it really sucks to play racing games in 2P mode with no AI to mix things up.
Man, I used to play Rock N' Roll Racing on the SNES with my friends like an idiot and it would never been so fun if it was just about me against one of my friends and nothing else... Stuff like Grinder blowing up your car 1 millimeter before you cross the finish line is what makes it a whole more interesting and challenging.

Also in the case of the PS1 you have like dozens and dozens of kart racing games, with most of them looking very similar at first glance; so knowing which ones of them have a decent 2P mode would be cool IMO.

Backing to your list, ABF, I think some games there don't have split screen like Zero 4 Champ and Burning Road (I think it has only a link mode), but I'll have a proper look on it.

There is exactly ONE racing game on the N64 that doesn't have a split-screen mode -- F1 Pole Position 64. Every other racing game on the system has splitscreen multiplayer. It's surely got to be the highest percentage of splitscreen multiplayer racing games ever on a home console... :) And a significant percentage have 4-player splitscreen support, too.

As for whether games have AI in the multiplayer, though, I'd need to play every game to know that, and while I have played the N64 games in my list there, I haven't played all of the ones for the other systems. Here are a few I can think of offhand, for the N64:

N64:
Hydro Thunder - Multiplayer has no computer opponents. Also remember that 3 or 4 player modes require the Expansion Pak.
F-Zero X - Multiplayer races have four racers in them, any mix of humans and computers (if playing with less than four humans).
Wipeout 64 - Two player mode has a full field of 16 (so you two and 14 computers), and full graphics. 3 or 4 player mode has only 4 racers (so 1 AI in 3-player mode, none in 4 player), and track-side graphics are disabled -- so it's just the track in black space. This game could have used Expansion Pak support, but released just barely too early I guess...

Actually, one reason I started on that list was to show that N64 racing games have more tracks on average, and better multiplayer, than PS1 or Saturn racing games do. :p

Thanks for the additional info and I agree with most of your comments, I have no doubt that in terms of 4P split screen the N64 wins hands down; in such aspect I'll be just measuring the gap.

There's another game in your list, GT24 for the Saturn, which also doesn't have split-screen and actually it's not even simultaneous 2P. All that you can do is to use the second controller when you change the driver in the 24 Hour mode. Yep, it's that dumb.

When I said "splitscreen multiplayer" on the N64, of course I meant multiplayer in general; Micro Machines 64 Turbo doesn't have splitscreen, it has 8-player single-screen multiplayer (two players on each controller! One with d-pad, other with C-buttons.).

Well, in Vatlva you aren't racing. You are driving around shooting at the other cars. You are NOT racing against them from one point to another, around a track; you just drive around an arena shooting at them. Vatlva is more like a top-down 2d version of Twisted Metal, which I wouldn't call a racing game either! There isn't any racing in Vatlva. Just cars driving around shooting eachother.

And on that note, Destruction Derby counts because it's got plenty of races; the derbies are car combat stuff, sure, but most of the game is a car racing game. Your goal is winning each race.

This is true, if you're looking for only splitscreen games, Micro Machines wouldn't count. The series never had splitscreen, always single-screen.

That's ridiculously weak "multiplayer"... will fix. I know there are some other racing games out there with alternating-only multiplayer (Outrun 2 for the Xbox and Outrun 2006 for PS2/Xbox are alternating or system-link only! Ugh!), but it's pretty annoying stuff.

No, this is nothing like that. The difference there is that Virtua Fighter is, of course, a fighting game. Vatlva and Twisted Metal, however, are not racing games. You will not find them listed as racing games on any site anywhere, because they aren't racing games, and should not be on any list of racing games. In a racing game, you race from one point to the next, and win by getting to the finish line either first, or within the time limit.

However, there is a justification for including them, and that's if you are making a list of all games wehre you drive a vehicle, instead of just racing games. That way you can include Twisted Metal, Rogue Trip, etc. The issue is though, where's the line between that and stuff like mech games, submarine shooting games, etc? Why include Twisted Metal, but not ShellShock, Critical Depth, or even MechWarrior 2 or Rogue Squadron? Why include car combat games, but not air combat games? Those are vehicular combat games too... And this is why I at least would list only racing games, that's an easy one to differentiate. It's Barone's list, though, he can include car combat games as well if he wants. He says in the OP that he's doing that (that he is including car combat games, as well as racing); I wouldn't mix the two, because car combat and racing games are quite different in game design, but it's hist list. Maybe they should be noted to be car combat games and not racing games, though. Yeah, car combat games can also be called "driving" games, but still...

Nice work. I forgot that the 3/4 player mode in Hydro Thunder is first-person view only. It's kind of annoying as I much prefer behind-the-car, but still, it's better than no 3 or 4 player mode, considering that the N64 version is the only home console version of Hydro Thunder that supports more than two players!

Also, of course, Wipeout 64 and F-Zero X do have one CPU-controlled player in 3 player mode, but you aren't listing that separately.

You keep forgetting Mario Kart 64 Barone. That has 2 Player Split Screen with 6 AI controlled racers (2 Player GP Mode). There's 2 Player Splitscreen with no AI (2 Player VS and Battle), as well as 3/4 Player Splitscreen with no AI (3/4 Player VS and Battle).

Hmm... I disagree.
I know it's a can of worms but I consider the 32X a 5th gen add-on, yes. And given that it has its own RAM, VRAM, VDP and CPUs I also like to consider it a 5th gen platform.

The FM Towns Marty is another platform which some people like to put down to the 4th gen but I also disagree about that. The arguments used to push it the 4th gen include the fact that its processor only supports 16-bit bus addressing but they also ignore the other features of the system.

The Amiga CD32 is listed as 5th gen in gamefaqs while it's reusing much older technology in its design - something people like to bring against the 32X - and it's by far the one which mostly "feel" as a 4th gen console out of all the lesser-known ones listed there IMO.
But I also consider it a 5th gen console.

So, in my own world, I think I'm far more coherent than gamefaqs or wikipedia.
And, yes, their games which fit in this list will be included too.

The CD32 isn't an addon to a 4th gen console. It's a new system, even if the hardware inside is old. Because it is an addon to a 4th gen console, the 32X is fourth gen by definition, even if it released more than a year after the first 5th gen systems. That's just how it is. I agree with the standard definitions in this case.

@Barone : The 32X is a special case since it's an add-on which more or less also works with the Mega Drive. & though it has its own features i still consider it to be part of the whole [MD + MCD + 32X] 4th gen' combo.

The FM Towns is another special case since there's the 4th gen' computer & then the 5th gen' Marty which is based on the computer... I don't know a lot about these systems & know more about their library.

Agree about the Amiga CD32 (Which indeed fails to impress though it has a few interesting titles).
