I've never really been too into SEGA games. I more so grew up with Nintendo. I've mostly only played Sonic, Streets of Rage, Ristar, a bit of Vectorman, and Crazy Taxi (like once). What are some good games on the Genesis, Game Gear, or Master System I should try out?

- Aladdin (a classic, it's a bit iffy but at the same time it's awesome, depends on what you look for in a game)
- Lion King (not as good as Aladdin, still great, plays much better than the SNES version)
For action games, the following are my favorites:
- Shinobi 3 (pretty much the perfect ninja game)
- Revenge of Shinobi (a slower, more methodical and atmospheric game, an amazing prequel with better music)
- Castlevania Bloodlines (not as polished as SCV IV, but a lot more action packed, Pyron made a patch that greatly improves the colours in the game)
- Strider (phenomenal port of the arcade game)
- Ghouls and Ghosts (see above, not as good)
Beat'em Ups, not a big fan of the genesis offerings (besides the SOR games), but i'm not a big fan of the SNES's either.
Make sure to get STREETS OF RAGE 2 if you haven't already, best game on the system.
- Splatterhouse 3 (horror beat'em up? hell yeah)
- Golden Axe 1/2 (pretty much the same, rather basic but endearing beat'em ups)
- Comix Zone (awesome comic book style game)
- TMNT Hyperstone Heist (crappier turtles in time... fuck you konami)
Run'n'Guns:
- Gunstar Heroes (cult classic)
- Ranger-X (takes some getting used to, remember that light is important, one of the best games ever made)
- Mega Turrican (huge focus on platforming, the best console turrican)
- Alien Soldier (brutal boss rush, just awesome)
- Contra Hard Corps (Konami decided to show they could take on treasure, game goes completely insane on the action, nothing like that pansy Contra 3)
- Adventures of Batman and Robin (very hard, drags on too much, total graphical showoff though)
- Atomic Runner (much better than the arcade version, forced scrolling)
- Rolling Thunder 3 (lacks the run part, a lot more methodical)
Adventure/RPG games:
- Crusader of Centy (as close to Zelda as you'll get on the genesis, still manages to be different enough and still very good)
- Beyond Oasis (Zelda + Streets of Rage? probably the closest description, it's really awesome, music is boring unfortunately)
- Ecco The Tides of Time (super atmospheric game where you play as a time-traveling dolphin fighting aliens, yes, you read correctly)
- Wonderboy in Monster World (the predecessor to Monster World 4, plenty more RPG elements)
- Phantasy Star 4 (the only RPG you should care about on the genesis)
Strategy:
- Langrisser 2 (you need a patched game, unfortunately only released in japan, phenomenal SRPG)
- Shining Force 1/2 (pretty much the best SRPGs of the generation that came to the west, if not entirely)
- Dune 2 (near perfect port of the PC original, I actually like it more)
Shoot'em Ups:
- Thunderforce 4 (the best TF game, the best shooter of the generation, well, tied with Gate of Thunder)
- MUSHA (phenomenal vertical shooter)
- Gaiares (coolest weapon mechanic in a shooter ever)
- Gleylancer (JP, but playable all the same, very cool weapons)
- Super Fantasy Zone (the best fantasy zone game, you scroll in both directions)
- Zero Wing (you should know this one)
Fighting:
Besides the obvious Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombats:
- Yu Yu Hakusho (JP only, supports 4 players! Second best fighting game on a home console IMO, after Gundam Endless Duel)
Others:
- Mega Bomberman (a crappy port of the best bomberman is still the best bomberman)
- Pepen Ga Pengo (bomberman style game, very good, JP only but no need for translation)
- Devil's Crush (the best pinball game ever made)
For the master system and game gear, there's not that many games I'd recommend. A lot of great game gear games require a translation patch.
Master System (some of these might be EU only...):
- Asterix and the Secret Mission (best asterix game besides the arcade one)
- Land of Illusion (amazing mickey mouse game)
- Kenseiden (great action game)
- Ninja Gaiden (much easier than the NES ones)
- Master of Darkness (great castlevania "clone")
- Power Strike 2 (great vertical shooter)
- R-Type (great port)
- Ghouls and Ghosts (great port with unique features)
- Wonder Boy 3 (best Wonder Boy game)
- Sonic the Hedgehog (much better than later attempts)
- Lucky Dime Capper (awesome donald duck game)
- Golden Axe Warrior (better than the original zelda game zelda clone)
Game Gear:
- Royal Stone (great strategy RPG, JP...)
- Shining Force Gaiden series (great portable SRPG fun, JP...)
- Sylvan Tale (zelda style game, JP...)
- Shinobi 2 (different from the genesis games, very good)
- Tails Adventures (metroid with tails? best description I can give)
- Aleste GG (great vertical shooter)
- Power Strike 2 (different from the SMS one, great looking if a bit poorly balanced)
- Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (awesome fighting game with a proper single player mode)
- Arena (isometric run'n'gun? not sure how to describe this)
- Kishin Douji Zenki (awesome, awesome platformer, man it's awesome, have I said it's awesome? JP only...)
- Sonic Triple Trouble (really iffy, but it's hella impressive)

How is The Lion King worse on SNES? (Besides the awful OST.) I played I think every version except the SNES one.

Alien Soldier is one of the best games on the system in my opinion. If you like your games to have a challenge, that is.

Game Gear: Here are a few Japan-only import games to consider:

GG Aleste - Good shmup. The sequel is good as well; it had a Japan+Europe-only release.
Fray: Shuugyouhen - Has too much slowdown, but otherwise I quite like this one. It's basically a shmup.
The Berlin Wall - Bubble Bobble-style platform-action game.
Gunstar Heroes - Pretty good run & gun for the hardware! LOTS of flicker and slowdown, but... well, GG games often have slowdown.
Mappy - Good version of an arcade classic.
Royal Stone - Great strategy game! This is the spiritual sequel to the Western-released Crystal Warriors, one of my favorite GG games. Royal Stone has a fan translation patch.
Sylvan Tale - Good action-RPG; also has translation patch.
Tails' Sky Patrol - Most don't seem to, but I actually quite like this...
Buster Ball - Weird future-sports-ish thing. Bad framerate, but it's unique...
The bolded titles below are EU-only. Most EU SMS games will play on a US Master System, though.
I don't like the Master System much, but it does have some good and great games. My favorites for the SMS are Power Strike, The Ninja, and Zaxxon 3D.Quote:

I don't dislike Landstalker but I also find it overrated. Those crazy jumps on an isometric game (that the game punishes you hard for failing later on) just don't work. They really drag down what is otherwise a great game.
It would have been much better as a regular top down game, like Alundra, which is one of my top 5 PS1 games.
