1. That doesn't change my concerns. A script isn't everything (specially for Star Wars, let's not pretend it was ever great to begin with) and not what I have a problem with.
2. The fact that he is a fan can actually hurt the movie. In fact, it does look like a fan film.
3. That's was never a requirement.
4. Come on, are we really expecting someone to make criticisms against a movie that he's in? No, he's going to promote it.

The prequels were the Roman Empire to the originals Dark Ages. It wasn't necessarily more advanced (and they actually show examples of that), it just had a different aesthetic. It was also meant to represent what was lost when the Empire took over.

Yes, I did care. I cared about it all. I specially cared about how Lucas put the story ahead of fans whishes. He could have easily rehashed the original trilogy (like they seem to be doing here), he could have made a movie about Darth Vader slashing Jedi left and right, but he didn't. He had a story to tell and he stuck to his guns.

Now, of course nobody has to like what he did. Personally, I do. I'm also not pretentious enough to say that I know better than him about the universe he created (which they also did with this movie by discarding the story he delivered to them).

P.S: Before anyone comes with the age fallacy, I grew up with the original trilogy (pre-Special Edition).

Looks much better than the last three but still off. Something isn't sitting right. To bad the new Stormtroopers look like they were purchased at the Apple Store.

Believe it or not, Terminator Salvation did the idea of a prequel better, I feel. You saw familiar aspects to what we knew was coming, but it was clunkier and less advanced. Functional and deadly, but clunky. The whole "everything got lost" just felt like a lazy way out of having to design older, less advanced stuff that could still be cool looking and completely functional for the purpose at hand. Especially since the Empire had all that more advanced stuff at the end of Episode III, as opposed to it all being destroyed by the end of that episode.

Didn't he stuck to his guns with Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull as well? That had the same overall feel as the second trilogy when I watched it, and it seemed just as lacking as the second trilogy too... IMO mind you.

I claim no grand knowledge of his Star Wars universe, nor do I say I know better. I didn't write the stuff after all, nor did I follow any of the side stuff that came out over the years (books, games, cartoons, etc.). But I can still call out what I feel were bad choices in some of his movies, can't I?


Let's make something very clear here. I don't hate George Lucas. Never did. But to me, he lost something by the time the second trilogy came around. Maybe it was having too much free reign with no one to pull him down a bit. Maybe it was simply pulling a Peter Jackson and wanting a trilogy instead of a single movie to tell the story. Maybe it was him wanting to keep the franchise going, but not getting the best ideas together for it. I don't know. But for me, the first trilogy was just better focused, with a simpler but broad story, and much more interesting and likeable characters. That's what it all boils down to for me :)

I also agree, however ep 3 Revenge of the Sith was the best of the prequels and actually stands alone and independent of eps 1 & 2 IMHO.

I hear ya. Lets hope is not "Social Justice Wars". I'll give it a chance first before passing judgement.

I'm more excited for this than I was earlier this year but it's a nervous excitement and I'm still very cautious as to my thoughts. I still can't get over the fact that they axed the entire expanded universe which I have come to love over the years. We'll just have to see how it turns out.

While I can see why many are miffed at the axing of the Expanded Universe, I personally feel Disney had no choice. They'd otherwise have to make sure every little choice & direction they go in doesn't contradict too heavily with an EU book somewhere. I'd imagine they might take inspiration from some of the good EU stuff, but won't tie themselves down to it either. I think EP7 will be really, really good - the minute I heard Lucas was gone & JJ/Disney were at the helm, my fears disappeared!

I'll be holding off seeing this for a week or two post-release to let the hype die down. A quiet cinema with no cell phones & idle chatter will be a hard thing to find to watch EP7 in!

They did make an absolutely atrocious cartoon series in 2008. Avoid at all costs.

I'm going to throw a massive great storyline theory out on this thread that's probably complete tosh but I wondered if this whole trilogy could have something to do with cloning? Maybe the empire got the DNA of Luke (maybe off his severed hand?) and start their own Darkside clones...

Well, this is a sequel to a movie, not the EU.

So, I finally wrote up my thoughts on why I'm not too excited for the movie. I mean, I'll watch it, and it might even be good, but I am not anywhere remotely near as hyped for this as I was for, say, Episode II. I loved Star Wars from when I first saw the movie in the early '90s. I still like the franchise, though probably not quite as much as I did before things like the Clone Wars cartoon, which was okay but not great. So, why am I not too hyped for this new one? Well, here are the reasons.

1. I didn't hate the prequels; in fact, I think they're pretty good. Yes, I is my least favorite of the six movies, but it's still a good movie, and I like III as much as V (VI, RotJ, is my favorite of course). I think of it as George Lucas's concept and series. He made the series what it is, and mostly did good; sure, 'Han shoots first' was kind of dumb, but there were good things about the remakes too, for instance. (Removing the Yub Yub song at the end of RotJ is somewhat unforgivable, though!) But anyway, "ow without George Lucas!" is not a selling point for me; quite the opposite, it's a drawback. I know it's cool to hate on Lucas, but I don't dislike his work, or his movies. I think they are mostly pretty good. Yes, I like episodes II and III quite a bit, writing included. :) Star Wars won't be the same without George Lucas, and I don't think I'll consider these new films 'canon' like the Star Wars properties he was involved with should be. The movie could be great and surprise me, but I doubt it.

2. This first movie is being directed by JJ Abrams. While I liked Abrams' first popular TV series, Alias, it lost me after the story went crazy. Lost never really grabbed me either. And then after that he made the Star Trek reboot, and it was something of a disaster; the movie was an okay Star Wars knockoff masquerading as a Star Trek film. It's not terrible, but it's not great either, and is one of the weaker Star Trek movies, in my opinion. The philosophical side, the adventure, that was mostly gone in favor of more action and explosions and stuff. Blowing up Vulcan in the first one was unforgivable, I lost faith in Abrams entirely as soon a that happened. I have not watched the second one, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and don't really want to; the first one was mediocre enough. Of course people like explosions, so JJ Abrams Trek is the most successful Star Trek movie sadly enough, but my opinion was quite different. I'm not looking forward to how he's going to mess up Star Wars, after doing some of that to Trek previously.

3. From the early '90s until the mid '00s, I really liked Star Wars books. I mean the Expanded Universe novels, particularly; I never read the comic books. I liked those books a lot, and still have several boxes of them in the basement -- I must own 50-plus of them. I stopped reading after the end of the New Jedi Order series, as the EU book series seemed to be going downhill in quality, and there were some low points before that I admit, but good or bad, I liked it for a long time, and did follow the general plot of the series even after I stopped reading the books... and Disney, of course, completely ditched the old EU in favor of this new rewrite for the movie, and it sounds like it'll be NOTHING like what the EU was. "All that story you read for like 15 years and really got into? Forget it, we're starting all over" is NOT something I wanted to see. Sure, I accept that a film is going to rewrite some things -- some parts of the old EU were overwritten by the Prequel Trilogy, after all, for instance -- but entirely throwing the whole thing away was a mistake, for me. I don't like that.

4. And particularly, I don't like some of the little bit we know about this new version of the post-RotJ Star Wars universe. While Disney is for the most part successfully keeping most of the plot under wraps, many theories and supposed leaks aside, from what little I've heard, there is one key thing I greatly dislike. Apparently there is a "Resistance" and an "Empire", or something like that, in this world 30 years after RotJ. The New Republic apparently is now noncanon. No victory for the rebels, they're still fighting Imperials thirty years after Vader and the Emperor died. If this REALLY is how the movie is going to go, that's just stupid. This gets into a problem the EU books ran into eventually, coming up with new threats. By the late '90s, the 'remnant Imperials / secret Death Stars or Dark Jedis / etc" plots really had gotten old, so they reinvigorated the series in the early '00s with the New Jedi Order series. It did some bad (killing Chewie, Jacen becoming a Sith in the series after NJO), but the new major threat made things more interesting again, and the Yuuzhan Vong were very different in some pretty interesting ways. So, Abrams and co. seem to have decided that the answer to this problem is to have the Rebels never win at all! The problem is, they won in RotJ. Killing the Emperor and Vader, destroying Death Star II, those were major victories. Yes, the war was going to last a while after that, it's a big galaxy, but saying 'all these decades later they still haven't won' is annoying and stupid. Of course that amount of time has to have passed if you're going to use the old stars again, since they have aged in the 33 years since RotJ, but still... even those dumb ex-Imperial-superweapon plots like in Darksaber are better than "they still haven't won, Jedis might still be a legend, etc." Ugh.


So, there are four major reasons why I'm not too hyped for the movie. Perhaps age is part of it as well, I'm not a teenager anymore, but that's not it; adult males are apparently the main group pre-ordering tickets for the movie. Of course, a lot of those people probably disagree with me pretty strongly particularly on point number one on my list here, so that would explain part of it.

In conclusion, the Warcraft movie looks interesting, and as someone who really loved the Warcraft RTSes, I'm very hopeful that this film retelling of Warcraft 1 will be good. The recent teaser certainly was promising.

thanks that despecialized edition looks interesting. I guess ill look for the 2008 DVD sets. I have the originals on VHS just want them again on some other format along with the prequels which i have none of.

The Despecialized version is awesome. I have never seen them look that good. You can see the film grain.

damn, seeing ABF's concerns while a) giving props to the terrible prequels and b) knocking the most entertaining star trek film in years made me get a little more hyped for this now

If what you want out of Star Trek is a brainless action movie with lots of explosions and stuff, don't watch Star Trek. Watch something that's actually supposed to be like that. Right now, I'd rather watch Star Trek V again than JJ Abrams Trek. (Not saying it's better, just that I'd rather rewatch it.)

If the prequels are pretty good movies, the bar on what makes a movie pretty good must be really low.

The prequels were pretty bad. I think they could salvage maybe an hour of good footage between all. They wasted so much time on the first movie and the fall of the Jedi and beginnings of the Rebellion seems to be just an after thought. To much concentration on the micro not enough on the macro.

I've watched a lot Star Trek so the first Abrams movie left me confused. So many things that set me off, Vulcan, the pointless need to change the the future/past, lens flare, why does the bridge look like an Iphone?, etc yet I watched that movie about 18 times in a row. It really made me feel like I was in the future. For once I really got see how all this technology was incorporated into life at home. So many little details. It wasn't so damn preachy either. The second movie though was horrible. Felt like a rehash to me.

I just checked what wikipedia says about the release. I guess it comes out on the 16th in some countries. Now I'm jealous! I have tickets for the 18th, which is its United States release. It looks good. My only fear is that it might be too fanservicey.

Saw the midnight launch airing in Australia (lots of cinemas were doing 12:01AM airings!).

Brilliant stuff. Not gonna spoil anything. Was kind of eerie how silent the entire audience fell (in a full cinema!) when the "A long time ago, in a galaxy far away" text popped up.

Unfortunately I've stumbled upon spoilers on quite a few sites already. While I'll still go see it and hold off on final judgement until after I've seen it, I'm getting the feeling my fears are going to be confirmed...
