This movie was basically fan pandering, pure and simple. No originality, no nothing. A (selective) copy of what came before, just with a different name. Felt completely superficial, not even trying to open the imagination of the audience.

When the premise of making a movie is "What do the fans want?", instead of "what's the story?" (and yes, there was a story from Lucas himself), you know nothing meaningful can come out of it. Gene Roddenberry once called that attitude 'prostitution'. And it's true.

Haven't seen those movies since I bought them on VHS during the one last time campaign. I just don't buy the BS Hollywood is pumping out since quite some time now. Especially as a comic book & videogame fan, where I get way, way, way, way better and more mature stories then the bottom of the barrel trash Hollywood pumps out. The standard in movies these days is at an all time low. Why most don't know better.

I'll admit this movie took a lot from IV but I can't say it was an awful film! I think people just need to take it as it is a film... if you hate it then watch something else :D

The series is already crippled (well, dead as dead can be). Go watch the video links I've posted. Nothing in this movie makes sense. Plot holes. Lore holes. All character development of 4-6, gone. All progress in 4-6, gone, back at square one, so 4-6 was for nothing. Nothing is explained, ever. Total remake of 4, making this one completely not rewatchable because, well, it's total garbage and why over 4 when 4 is actually good. Doesn't feel one bit like a Star Wars movie from as early as the opening crawl. Feminist propaganda. PC propaganda. etc, etc, etc. etc. Star Wars is now dead. This movie killed it one single blow. There's literally no more new hope.

That isn't happening anytime soon. The Original 6 movies are still owned by 20th Century Fox until at least 2020 if I remember correctly. And they have the exclusive rights to A New Hope for all eternity.

That is false. Fox does not and never has owned Star Wars. Fox has only owned the distribution rights to the first 6 movies, and now apparently Fox only owns the distribution rights for episode 4 . Fox has never owned Star Wars as an IP or a trademark. Star Wars has always belonged to George Lucas and his Lucasfilm studio. Lucas sold everything to Disney including Lucas Arts, Industrial Light and Magic, THX, and Skywalker Sound. Disney owns 100% of Lucasfilm. The same thing applies to Indiana Jones. Disney ownes it but Paramount Pictures owns the distribution rights to the first four.

If Disney opts to re-release the unaltered versions, Fox would probably be in charge of distribution.

No Thief will never be right enough as this was a trash heap of a film that trashed the series for me completely and I have completely lost interest in the series asides from the Expanded Universe. I was so frustrated and bored with this film that I would've walked out of the theater had I not gone with friends. It was a rehash to the finest definition of the word had so many plot holes that it wasn't funny. To start Luke and Han were both basically deserters who were feeling sorry for themselves when Ben turned to the dark side which left Leia to deal with everything herself as the General of the resistance and it's their fault that the steroid Death Star blew up the republic. Luke would obviously have had no trouble defeating Kylo Ren and probably Snoke himself which would've ended the threat but he went and hid himself so he could pout. Why is it when Leia sees Han for the first time in 12 years she just simply acts like they're old but casual friends who are briefly catching up. Totally wrong approach to the writing there, was it not? Why did Kylo Ren throw so many temper tantrums, destroy so much stuff which he was in charge of and then turn around and not only have his fancy steroid Death Star blown up with the help of a renegade janitor and then get his butt handed to him by a non force user and a force sensitive who just learned that she had the capabilities and then master say nothing about it aside from that it's time to complete his training? Trash writing at its finest! The Han Solo death scene was about the biggest cop out, throw away attempt to create shock value that I've ever seen. I could go on and on but I'll stop. Needless to say, it's a craptastic movie!

^ I almost walked away from it too. But was with a friend and even if I wasn't, I was going to force myself to watch just so I could finally stop avoiding everything about it on the internet and finally start discussing the movie myself too.

I went into the movie with very low expectation because my brother said it flat out sucked big time. I told him not to say more until I seen. lol, he didn't even want to watch it again so I could watch it because of how much he hated it. Had to drag a non-Star Wars friend instead. Watching with that friend is what made the night worth it, because we smoked up, got lost in an underground parking lot because of it, and other funny things because of that. We had a lot of laughs before getting to the movie and after trying to figure out how to get back to the car, lol.

I'm going to say it and I am not ashamed of it:

I was WAAAAAAYYYYYY more excited about The Phantom Menace than I was about Episode 7. And I will add, the stories of episodes I, II and III are MILES better than that of Ep 7.

After much pressure from friends I finally went to see the new SW film... I liked it because I felt like I was watching a Star Wars movie. Admittedly the first one again, but in a good way! Great interweaving of new cool characters with the original cast, JJ Knows how to do stuff like that really well.

People are entitled to enjoy whatever they like.

Personally I thought the film was enjoyable cotton candy. A burst of Star Wars Flavor with no "meat", no substance, and that quickly fades away.


I mentioned it before, but the biggest thing about TFA is how little it actually sticks with me.
Like or hate the prequels, they stuck with you. You thought about them, talked about them, hated many of the choices made (IE: Jar Jar), but there was a lot of meat there to pull in and digest.

TFA retreads so much already established in the original trilogy that it has virtually nothing of its own to say.
I've said this to several friends, that my biggest gripe with the movie is how much it relies on not standing on its own.
It may be elevated by the sequels to being an OK movie... but if it's standing purely on its own merits it falls VERY short.

It leans on the OT like a massive crutch, desperately throwing nostalgia out to keep you afloat. And it all but falls and collapses on itself setting up the inevitable sequel(s) to answer everything left unanswered/unexplained... of which there's a good deal.

^ Yes. Agree. You can enjoy bad movies. But TFA is a very bad & flawed movie. Make no mistake. It really shows everything wrong with Hollywood movies these days so much, that it's actually making many wake up to this fact as the only positive to this mess of a movie. That's how bad it was.

I just think you need to accept that cinema goers have changed and not every film is going to be your cup of tea. I enjoyed Force Awakens just as much as any other Star-wars film, I didn't sit picking it to bits. Nor did I have any issue with the lead being female.

This is without a doubt, the most negetive star wars thread I've seen on the internet yet. I have to wonder if some of you guys didn't want to like the movie, went to see the movie, thought about all the little problems, and then focused on the problems and shoved out the thoughts of anything you liked.

I get that the movie wasn't perfect. I wasn't expecting it to be. But, I found a lot more to like than to dislike.

That movie was so bad it took me awhile to break it into little pieces to actually digest what I just watched, sorta like witnessing a head on collision. I wasn't expecting perfection, the bar had been set pretty low after the prequels, but I had hopes. "They used real film and lots of practical effects plus Abrams is huge Star Wars fan" none of that seemed to matter. Shitty CGI looked like shitty CGi, John Williams must be using left overs, characters are lame some more than others, recycled plot, and the Skywalker scene at the end was as ridiculous as the "arise" scene in Sith. Yeah this describes Hollywood in general but this feels more personal. Let's just face it the movie sucked. /thread

The first assertion is debatable, but I agree too.

The second is simply wrong. Kylo Ren is the only interesting thing in TFA. He's the first weak bad guy in this kind of film, that's original. I really wonder what they'll make of him.

You know, on premiere I actually kinda enjoyed TFA, but even then the feeling of "I have seen this movie before; just the day before to be precise" (I had a six-movie marathon prior to going to see TFA) has lingered inside me. And now the more I think about it, the more bitter I become. We have an endlessly praised ("Star Wars is back!" - it never went away, you nitwits) mediocre fanfic that rehashes the plot points of the original trilogy and doesn't even do a good job of doing that. Because I've already seen a all-in-one Star Wars work that rehashes OT: it was called Knights of the Old Republic. But whereas KotOR was clever and subtle and put some spins on those plot elements, TFA is blatant and dumb, as blatant as they come.
Also: So, this is what we have instead of Kyle Katarn, Corran Horn and Grand Admiral Thrawn?

Mmm I don't mind The Phantom Menace but did you honestly find it better? When did you last watch it?

Remember the film Idiocracy, or at least the premise?
It is happening, and the continued popularity of Star Wars and similarly vapid Hollywood trash is just another symptom.

At least TPM had the ambition to set a universe. It was naive, characters were poorly written, but it didn't look like the first trilogy. TFA only relied on our memories of the original Star Wars. The only thing it has that TPM didn't is a character with potential, and it's Kylo Ren. Either it works or not will be the only hope of the 2 remaining episodes.

There are many good elements in TFA. Rey was great. BB 8 was great. The concept of Finn was great, but his dialogue/character poorly-handled (I guess I just can't get passed the fact that he was raised as a super soldier of sorts, devoid of all emotions away from society; only to have more expressible feelings and knowledge of the vernacular lingo than the son of the biggest silver tongue devil in the galaxy. They could've gotten away with it all by instilling in him the power of the Force. But, no, that would have been too coincidental :?). I also enjoyed the cinematography. But even with all of that, I also still enjoyed the follow-up Star Wars novels more than this rehashed piece of work. Even Vonda N. McIntyre's The Crystal Star had more content and heart than TFA.

If there's one vid out of all TFA vids out there breaking the movie apart, with great commentary, and big laugh out loud moments that come out of nowhere...

For best affect, smoke a joint first to expand the mind a little + goes great with this guy's expanded mind chit chat and for, of course, those lol moments to hit much harder too.

I know it's an hour video, but just watch the first 10 min at least and if it doesn't have you sold on it by then, then fine. But otherwise I found this vid extremely entertaining from beginning to end and wish it could of gone for longer. (And don't just listen to it in background, it goes very well with what he shows)
