Not only do they need to fire people in the hardware department, but also the marketing department.
No one comes close to flubbing advertising and naming like Microsoft. Remember their ad campaign for Windows Phone? "Our phone OS sucks so bad, you'll use it as little as humanly possible and therefore get back to real life quicker!" And the less said about the "xboner" the better. :D
Winmo is a solid platform, but yeah they have struggled like hell for ages to try and get things moving on it. The new phones lagging behind on features for so long certainly didn't help.
And I agree the XB1 name is.... less than ideal to put it nicely, but as was said previously the name, while silly, didn't hurt them from a marketing standpoint. Their flubs were far more policy and PR mistakes than marketing ones.
Nintendo is trying to draw from the Capcom well for naming conventions, but somehow it just doesn't ever come out right...
Awesome, wink wink, and self aware:

Uhh....
New Nintendo 3DS XL
Meme not required. Name stupid enough on its own.
Shifting gears, I just realized that Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is not exclusive to the new platform. So, the only announced game for the new hardware is Xenoblade Chronicles?
The only game announced to require the New system is Xenoblade Chronicles, yes. There are already multiple other games with marginal enhancements. Most notably (and quite dickishly), Smash Bros. for 3DS supports the second analog stick on a New 3DS, but does not support the Circle Pad Pro attachment.
Ironically, the name is the only thing wrong with the Xboner now.
1. Developers now have access to 7 CPU cores
2. They are freeing up the GPU from Kinect bullshit
3. It costs $350 now, to make up for the power difference from the PS4
4. Some models have a 1 TB HDD (forward-thinking)

They are steering that console in the right direction. Nintendo should take inspiration from this.
no 2ds xl?
The name obviously won't change, but it's not "terrible". It's just not great. But then again, the brand has always had sort of a "meh" name. People have derided it since the original.
But I agree it's definitely on the right path. They just need to clean up the UI a bit more since the kinect is no longer part of the default user experience. It's gotten better since the launch, but still lacks the ease of navigation the 360 has.
Nintendo has no easy out for their hardware issues.
The New 3DS (and I assume 2DS before long) are fragmenting the market again without truly providing anything really unique.
The Wii U could drop the gamepad and the price along with it, and bump up storage, but that's pretty much the extent of what they can do with it. They can't spec bump the system to come closer to MS/Sony without releasing a whole new console.
Their best bet now is to make the wii u the cheapest console they can... which is what it should have been in the first place. To be honest I could see the thing at $150 with no gamepad. That'd be a spot where I think it would sell like crazy. But so long as it's still directly competing with the 360 and ps3 (which have HUGE libraries and are still getting new games), the Wii U is just stupidly over priced.
You can get a new PS3 for $250 or less.
You can get a new 360 for $250 or much less.
Wii U? $300 or more.
MS figured out they had a price issue due to a mandatory add on that wasn't really needed or wanted. They unbundled it, price adjusted, and have been doing much better.
Nintendo needs to get with the program.
The Xbone has made a lot of improvements, but their sales situation hasn't really changed much. Perhaps they staved off what would have been a quick decline.
