Best guitars I've heard from a MD is in Zero Wing. That's obviously not GEMS though:)
Personally I think the music in Chakan works to create a pretty foreboding alien atmosphere. I found some of the tracks a bit intrusive in Comix Zone.

Either it was a space thing and they had stuffed the cartridge to the point where they couldn't fit drum samples, or it could have been that the gameplay segments use a lot of SFX samples (like the gunshot you'll be hearing most of the time) and they wanted to reserve PCM priority for that. Better drums would have helped the music tons, but I don't think it takes away from the existing qualities of the music.
Might not be the best place to ask, but what drivers did Jesper Kyd use for his stuff? Possibly polarizing, but I am enthralled by the Adventures of Batman and Robin OST.
Agreed, Red Zone music is insanely good. Game is no slouch itself either, imo. I think Zyrinx also did Scorcher? Some great tracks in that rather unique game as well.
I just can't get over AB&R, I can't even tell if I love the game or if the tracks are just so good that I have to play it. Probably somewhere in between.
The driver used certainly reminds me of GEMS a lot, but it definitely is a custom driver. Here is a fantastic list everyone even remotely interested in MD music should have seen: http://gdri.smspower.org/wiki/index....nd_Engine_List
