Sega Scan (Sega Channel's retooled retrospective show)

Hey guys! Been a while since I've shared one of our videos here. If you've been keeping up, things have been going really well for Sega Channel! Articles on Kotaku and The Guardian, collaborations with Screw Attack, and now Sega-16's own, Joe Redifer of Game Sack.

We've renamed our regular series "Sega Scan" and injected some different personality into it. I'm really hoping people like the new format, so I'd love to hear constructive criticism here at Sega-16. It would be so much appreciated.

It was great, aside from the creepy guest host guy. He didn't add much to it other than youtube "humor".

Has anyone told you that you kind of look and sound like Charlie from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia?

I liked it. Literally, I went to Youtube and gave it a thumbs up.

Hmm, i liked your older stuff better. This seems off. I can't really put my finger on it, but it seems less "produced" and muffled. the black ground is kind of weird to look at. Not sure why you changed it but I'd reconsider, you're older stuff seemed to have more to it.

Great episode, but I really liked the old Sega Channel main series and I thought this would be even better in the 'old' look.

Anyway, interesting video. I don't know how many people saw the Japanese commercial for it before this, either.

When you were talking about their other games, maybe you should have mentioned their pre-Treasure titles, like TMNT, The Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare(all arcade), Super Castlevania IV, Axelay, and I'm probably forgetting something still. It would have explained their experience as a developer, instead of making them sound like they came out of nowhere, and instantly started pushing the hardware to it's limits.

What staff member from Treasure worked on TMNT? Contra III is their main connection. Maegawa did Bucky O'Hare on the NES (although a few others worked on the arcade Bucky O'Hare). The only real connection to The Simpsons is the music done by Hanzawa. But they didn't really work on anything together pre-Treasure.

Treasure's first title is really McDonald's Treasure Land Adventures. Sega only agreed to do Gunstar Heroes after Treasure started working on McD's. Maegawa talks about it here:

He explains how Sega rejected Gunstar Heroes at first and so instead they took the contract for McD's and started working on it. However, they started to develop Gunstar Heroes on their own. A few months later, they took the prototype to Sega who liked it. They finished McD's first, but Maegawa hated the thought of their first released title being a licensed title so he managed to get McD's release delayed until right after Gunstar Heroes was released.

Though I'll admit that it's sketchy that they gloss over the original Guardian Heroes, and seem to think that Advance was their first beat 'em up as Treasure.

I can only prove it wrong by the complete and total lack of evidence.

I've never encountered another mention of this "Star Team" and a google search in English and Japanese turned up absolutely nothing except another Youtube user in 2008 making the same claim. I could be wrong as I've never really looked into Konami history, but...

If you look at the backgrounds of the various core Treasure staff it doesn't make sense:

Maegawa (President/Programmer): Joined Konami in 1989. Worked as programmer on Castlevania: The Adventure (GB) and 3 NES games. Left Konami in 1992.

Yaida (Programmer): Worked on 1 NES game for Konami in 1990 and 3 SNES games, including Castlevania IV (1991) and Contra III (1992).

Suganami(Programmer): Worked on Laser Invasion (NES, 1991) with Maegawa and Contra III (1992).

Kikuchi (Designer): Did enemy character design on Bucky O'Hare (arcade) in 1992.

Iuchi (Designer): Worked on Quarth (arcade) in 1989 and did main character design on Bucky O'Hare (arcade) in 1992.

Ishida (Programmer): Quarth (1989) and support programmer for Axelay (1992) on SNES.

Hanzawa (Music): Worked on a bunch of stuff including Castlevania: The Adventure, The Simpsons, and Bucky O'Hare.

Maegawa, Yaida, and Suganami were obviously in the console division at Konami.

Kikuchi and Iuchi worked on arcade games but do not appear to have been involved with Konami's big hits like TMNT or X-Men (although it is possible).

So I'm pretty sure that this is just nonsense that Treasure secretly worked on TMNT in 1989 and decided to keep it to themselves. Of course, it's possible that a few members such as Kikuchi did work on these arcade games, but the majority of the core Treasure team has no connection.

Perhaps if this Star Team thing is true, they started with TMNT, then started to include the members of what would become Treasure.

Again, it doesn't make sense since the 3 top people at Treasure never worked on arcade games.

Also, the staff lists of the Konami arcade games are generally known since they didn't often use pseudonyms for the end credits. There is just no connection between the staff of Bucky O'Hare and TMNT. Two different teams made those games. Konami was putting out 5 or 6 arcade games per year at that time. Their arcade division was huge.
