But even if we're on the low end of the spectrum at 500k, that plus Japan's 550k sales and whatever the hell it sold in Europe we're easily past those N64 racers.
I've said this before, but Wikipedia, and anyone hoping for accuracy, wouldn't use VGChartz. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ng_video_games There is exactly one VGChartz link here, and it's for something which there is other evidence for the sales for. The problem is, VGChartz is known to pretty much just make up numbers. This is why any mention of numbers from that site was banned from NeoGAF years ago.

That lines up with what I found on vgchartz. And Daytona USA would be on that list too if we had solid numbers for the rest of the world outside of Japan.
It well might, but I'd think that if the game had sold a million Sega would have said so at some point. I mean, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Daytona USA was over a million in sales, the game does seem to be super, super common, but if it did, why didn't Sega say so?

And again those top selling N64 games are Kart racers, wave race, and a Star Wars game released right when Episode 1 came out. How well did the N64 racers that are actually comparable to the likes of Sega Rally, Daytona USA, Gran Turismo, etc. sell?
Quote:
Apples to Oranges. You're comparing a kiddy party racer to a technical arcade racer. It's like comparing the sales of Angry Birds to Bayonetta.
Racing games are comparable to other racing games. Mario Kart is not in a different genre from Sega Rally, the two games are both racing games. So how well did N64 racing games comparable to Sega Rally sell? Almost 10 million.
You have a clear bias against any racing games that don'ty involve normal cars racing around tracks, and that's complete nonsense. My bias is generally pretty much the opposite of that (normal cars running around tracks is, all other things being equal, about the least interesting thing in the genre, for me, I like futuristic or fantastic settings better), but I'm not going to ignore games that don't fit my preferences just in order to twist a list towards the kinds of games I like.
What you're doing here is the equivalent of if I said "I find sim racers boring, so Gran Turismo doesn't count as a racing game. Mario Kart 64 is the best-selling racing game of the generation!" That is obvious nonsense, and so is what you say here.
Quote:
As for Gran Turismo it's 10% is about on par with Sega Rally (~12%).
Actually Sega Rally would be a bit over 12%, remember that the Saturn only sold about 9.1-something million systems.

The point is you're being ridiculous by labeling everyone who disagrees with you as an N64 hater. News flash, I actually like the N64 and enjoy it. I just don't look at it through rose colored glasses like you do.
I don't either, I've got lots of complaints about N64 graphics. The people who hate it here just seem to like to ignore or "forget" about almost everything negative I say about the N64, just to continue your fictional narrative that I say only good about the system.

Here's a hint of advice, if you're gonna move the goal posts it would be best not to do it within a few pages of each other. I wasn't talking about MK64, WaveRace64, F-Zero X, Star Wars Racer, etc. I was talking about the ones you were parading out at the time like Beetle Adventure Racing, World Driver Championship, Top Gear Rally, etc. Which guess what, none of those came close to selling what Sega Rally and Daytona USA sold on the Saturn.
Racing games are racing games. The idea that racing games only "count" if they are about cars driving around tracks is absurdly stupid, I cannot possibly disagree any more with such a ridiculous concept.
Quote:
So you really think MK64 and Sega Rally are in the same category of racers? Sega Rally is an arcade rally racer that focuses on time trials and mastering corners. Mario Kart 64 is a party racer that focuses on making you laugh. Same with Diddy Kong Racing. Wave Race is a jetski game, F-Zero X is a futuristic hover vehicle racer, Star Wars Pod Racer is a Pod racing game. What do any of those have in common with Sega Rally. It's like comparing Ocarina of Time to Final Fantasy and saying they're the same kind of game. No one in their right mind would say that.
I already said above that, yes, racing games are racing games, and ignoring games just because they aren't about normal cars is absurd. But there is some more to say about the games you mention here in specific.
Wave Race 64, F-Zero X, Diddy Kong Racing, and Star Wars Episode I Racer are all tough games that require a great deal of skill to beat. Ep. I Racer particularly, have you played that game? It's REALLY difficult, and requires precision and a great deal of memorization to win at. By the later parts of the game the tracks are very long, and the game punishes you HARD for any mistakes. I never managed to beat the game, it's just too tough. The game has great graphics, good gameplay, good controls, and lots of challenge. Wave Race isn't as hard as that and is a much shorter game, but it still requires a lot of practice, memorization, and skill to beat, just like a Sega Rally. And F-Zero X, of course you need to memorize everything to beat that game, as I did back in 2000 (finished every circuit in 1st!).
Oh, and Diddy Kong Racing... you haven't played much of that game in single player, obviously, or you'd never claim that it "just exists to make your laugh". Sure, Mario Kart 64 is a fun, easy game, but DKR is the polar opposite of that within that genre. DKR qets quite difficult near the end! Wizpig in particular requires absolute perfection to even be competititve with, in either of the two races you need to race against him in. Seriously, the Wizpig races are the hardest thing I've ever tried to do in a kart racing game. It's a Rare game, and at that point Rare liked to make their games challenging.

Daytona USA's low reviews has to do with it being rushed. But the game still plays well and is seen in a positive light these days. Same with CE.
Sure, they are, somewhat, but not in as good of a light as most of those N64 games you keep making fun of.
Quote:
Touring Cars bad reviews come from the frame rate and the fact that most people who play it have no clue how to actually play it. Touring Car needs to be played with an Analog controller. It's a game where pedal control is just as important as steering, and the analog triggers on the 3D Control pad help significantly with that.
And this one is that unpopular game you happen to like. I don't think people (other than you) say any more good about this game now as they ever did.
Quote:
Professional game reviews were shit then and they're still shit now.
Sometimes true, sometimes not, but what else is there, for a lot of games? At least professional reviews should give some sense of the game's quality.
Quote:
And how many times have great games been given shit review scores for petty reasons or shit games been given amazing review scores for unethical reasons? Sales can at least give us a general idea of public perception.
Sales are as much about good marketing as they are about good gameplay, though. The highest-scoring games are rarely the best-selling games.
Quote:
Which makes Sega Rally and Daytona USA outselling those N64 games on the Saturn all the more hilarious.
What? But the top-selling N64 racing games far outsold both of those games. Both systems have other racing games that sold less, but the N64's start from a much higher point.
In sales, compare top games to top games, middle-selling games to middle-selling games, etc. You're being incredibly deceptive by comparing top-selling Saturn games to mid-selling N64 games.
Quote:
Or it could be that it's just a mediocre racer. It didn't sell that well on the Dreamcast or PC either if I remember correctly.
Trolling one of the best games ever is incredibly stupid, but I imagine you know that. And I also imagine that if it was a Saturn game, you'd be praising it highly instead of trolling it.
Quote:
Weren't you the one telling use earlier that it was unfair to compare 2nd and 3rd Generation Saturn and PS1 games to 1st Generation N64 games?
I'd rather compare games on same-generation consoles to games from a similar point in their systems' lives. So first-gen N64 games to first-gen PS1 or Saturn games, etc.
