Exactly. Something like Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG comes along, and you think the genre's going to start heading in a good direction, and it goes right back to Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy clones, which were 95% of JRPG's already... If it weren't for those 2 and the Shining Force's I'd have given up all hope for this genre(or at least the turn based side of it). The most generic are the ones based on anime, that would probably just be boring as all hell if it weren't for the fact that a familiar license was attached to it...
After a while you'd think someone would realize, there's no such thing as good genres, just good games(books, comics, songs, TV shows, movies, etc.) within a genre.
MEGA-CD 3X3 EYES is one of the best RPGs of the 16-BIT era, and that is a manga license. Much like SEGA's Magic Knight Rayearth was one of the first REALLY good Saturn games. Not all licenses=crap. As for the DQ/FF clones, the main thing that makes an RPG is not graphucs or style, it's the story and characters/character interaction. An enjoyable battle system helps, too. Grandia on the Saturn already had everything else in spades but the battles were just so damn fun, it made the game even better. Can't say I am a fan of SMRPG, possibly because I frankly hate mario games and their worlds/characters.
The problem is I've started a lot of RPGs but never finish them. Eventually I just get bored. The only time that didn't happen was PSIV and Shining Wisdom. I have to be in the perfect mindset to resume one, like it's night time, friends are busy, nothing on TV, no work I should be doing, etc.
But the other reason games get re-translated and re-re-translated is that the labor of figuring out how these games work -- script location, compression, anti-piracy bombs, whatever -- has already been done, and there are tools to make it much easier for any random people to do whatever they want to the game.
It's not as if the people who are retranslating these games are always taking their expertise away from more deserving candidates. Sometimes they're picking these games specifically because it's already known territory, with very little actual hacking that needs to be done. In other words, they're not competent to translate a game that hasn't been done already.
CD/DVD games are always going to be less popular targets. The patch formats aren't standardized and the different rip formats are a mess, the consoles need mod chips, the emulation is often subpar, etc. Even if you get through all that, you have the logistical nightmare of figuring out what to do with the FMV and/or Japanese-language audio tracks -- and people want to complete projects, not leave a huge chunk untranslated.
There's a 3DO game (Doctor Hauzer) with its script sitting in freakin' plaintext on the CD, it's widely regarded as one of the best games on the system (or at least the most interesting), and yet it hasn't been translated. That irritates me, but the 3DO system is a hassle to deal with, and discs couldn't be signed (encrypted) until recently.

I am aware of the CD game problems such as text compression etc, I am still amazed that there are not more PCE games translated, though. PCE fanboys can be even worse than the nintendorks when it comes to blind tunnel vision. There are so many amazing RPGs on the system that it's amazing PCE translating groups have never formed. At least with the MEGA-CD and PCE, there is no problem with protection or need for a modded system. Nightwolve did amazing things PCE translation but I am unaware of anything other than XAK III and Ys IV being translated, many years ago.
If I had the skill to do a LUNAR: TSS translation, at least nothing would be left untranslated. The Japanese version has text in cutscenes, Working Hackjob Designs removed that from the English version.
I finally started playing Daihoushinden tonight. It was a game I have been meaning to play for years. I got the game from good old "videogameimports UK" back in 2001 and never past the opening village as I had no clue what to do. I always wanted to try again after studying Japanese. I am enjoying it so far, it's a shame more SEGA RPG fans cannot experience that game. The one oddity with the game is that it does not work with the RAM cart and it takes up all 120 blocks of the internal RAM. Grrr, very annoying! The graphics are very nice though. Closer to late PCE games like Xanadu II and Seiya Monogatari than rubbish like Loddoss, Arslan Senki, Burai etc. Music is pretty nice and is all PCM music. I am currently playing with out any FM sound at the moment so I not 100% sure it is PCM only. The FMV animation looks exactly like Keio Yugekitai which made me wonder if "Flashback" we're the team that made Keio as well. A Saturn sequel/remake would have been wonderful :(
Shining Force was definitely inspired by Fire Emblem. Kan Naito of Climax said everybody in the office was playing Fire Emblem when they came up with the idea for SF.

But FE didn't leave Japan before 2003, so there was no real equivalent in the West :)
Speaking of, I'm kinda surprised no one pulled the script out of the first book of Shining Force CD and applied to it Gaiden on the Game Gear.
Oh, and if it counts, the SNES had Ogre Battle. Which was some of the slowest gameplay you'd ever see back then(I even tried it pre-emulation)...
Ogre Battle came out a year or so after Shining Force, IIRC.
The SFC also had FEDA, which was a Shining Force clone made by most of the Climax team after they finished Landstalker.
Makes sense, a good first attempt at cloning what Camelot did too. Strange that it released about a year after the Japanese release of Shining Force II, because you can feel how it was inspired by the original Shining Force, without the improvements made by II.

Wow, you are so out of touch that I'm surprised you even know what a PC Engine is. :p
Devs and fans both want the same thing: to see those amazing PCE RPGs translated. That's why so many people are working on so many projects. The text compression bottleneck is the main roadblock for several projects to be completed and keeping many high profile ones from being started. PC Engine translation teams are so determined to get these games translated, that a new custom system card has been developed just to make them possible.
I'm guessing that you haven't heard that fans went and added a voice dub for Nightwolve's Ys IV text translation? Since then, several people worked together to narrow down the debug mode, which allowed Nightwolve to translate the remaining text in the game. He's also looking into doing a better translation of Xak III's script, adding voice acting and new fonts.
Startling Odyssey 2 also has the text fully translated, using a software translation which was then polished up. SO2 and XakIII even have pressed bootlegs of the translated versions now (against the translation teams' wishes).

From the research I've done, there just aren't that many RPGs on the Japanese Mega Drive, and I'm specifying RPGs because they're primarily what need and get translations. Someone earlier in this thread listed what? Like 20 games untranslated? The SNES had a couple hundred unreleased in the US. Really. There's tons, and yes a lot have been released so really that's where the expertise lies for the few teams who have been churning this stuff out over the years. Course the interesting flip side to this is the Genesis is where we're really seeing commerical hacks and homebrews being developed.

Is Patlabor a good game? Is nobody caring for it to be translated anytime?
I've heard that there's a Russian translation in progress, but I don't know anything about the potential English translations. Though, from what I've played, I can tell you that it's mostly an adventure game with some RPG battle sequences. It seemed rather average overall, but I haven't played for a long time. There are some other Genesis translations in progress though. :)

I also think that a Patlabor translation would be great. I'm not expecting it to happen any time soon though as it doesn't look like the most exciting game ever made.
There can't be too many games left that require translation now. I know there are plenty that aren't translated but most of them are playable anyway, so maybe Patlabor will see a translation at some point.

I remember that someone was working on translating The Hybrid Front, I do not remember the name of the group right now but they created a thread on the Romhacking forums.
And on the same site there is a user called Malias who is working on the translation of Panorama Cotton, i think he was very close to finish the project.
I saved some of the screens of the work in progres.
Right now I only remember those two, does anyone know if there is any other game being translated?
Speaking of The Hybrid Front - that would be me, celcion and TheMajinZenki. It's still in production, as we need to completely redo the menus, to be able to fit all the script in without mangling it horribly. As you might expect, that's what's taking the bulk of the time, as the script itself is fully translated already. You're right - Malias is almost done with PC. The game was retranslated from scratch by SamIAm from what I recall, which is why it needs a bit more time in the oven.
I believe Bahamut Senki is also a WIP, by Supper/Filler. Then there's Surging Aura of course. That's all I know of, but it's possible someone else is working on some other project in secrecy.

I've been waiting a while for this one.
I believe SSTranslations did the initial work on it, but they're no longer active. So, most likely nobody is working on it, same as that Yu Yu Hakusho game. I'm guessing that the next most likely projects for MD will be the Dyna Brothers games. Perhaps also that one Madou Monogatari game - though I'd rather work on the remaining Game Gear entries, personally, just to finish off that series for good.
Sorcerian sounds like it might be one of the most interesting out of the untranslated games. The 10 scenarios are original to that version, and were written by various people at SEGA - even Bo wrote one. For those not in the known, it's a side-scroller RPG, divided into subquests / scenarios, originally by Falcom.
I know it's been done to death elsewhere, but usually translation requests end up being just a alphabetical list of all the untranslated japanese games. Let's do a short one of the most wanted ones! Please do not suggest for this list games which are fully playable without translation. Here's mine IIRC:

I've just made a surprising amount of progress with translating a Japanese game. There isn't much text that needed to be changed, but I ran into the usual problem of running out of space in the text box in a few places. Is there a straightforward fix for this issue? I'm aware that people sometimes put all the translated text at the end of the rom and then point the game in the direction of that new text, so is there a tool or a method that helps with that or do I need to spend a long time looking at a disassembly?
Any help with this is appreciated, but please don't expect to see me release a translation patch when I'm done. The translation is just something I'm using to learn and it isn't accurate enough for a general release.
I don't know much about translating in particular, but I've done ROM hacking. It very much depends on the game, but in my experience, you generally don't need disassembly to change addresses. If the addresses are absolute, you can just replace them to any address you want, but if they're relative (like, the leading byte is omitted or common for all), it can get more trickier.
If you don't know where addresses are located, there are various ways to figure that out. A naive one would be to do a search based on a location that you believe is the start of a data block likely to be referenced by an address. Example: you know some text starts at address 0x387BA, so you look for "0387BA" or just "87BA" in the ROM.
If it works, it's definitely good enough for a release. There are loads of incomplete, erroneous or buggy translations around, it's still better than nothing, and can always be improved later.
Thanks dude. That's another hurdle overcome. This is my first attempt at this type of project and I'm really enjoying the process. If a half decent translation comes from it then I'll release it but to be honest I'm relying too much on some of the worst resources to translate the text. Translation is being done through a combination of:
- My own experience from when I was learning Japanese for a previous job (I left that job a long time ago).
- A friend who lived in Japan for a few years in the 1990s.
- Google translate (its worth it for some of the hilariously bad translations sometimes).
So I hope no one expects a new game to come out of my efforts, the game is mostly playable in Japanese anyway. Maybe if I get the game halfway there I'll ask for help with the rest of the translation. I used to have a Japanese friend, who had been quite willing to help with these kinds of projects, but we haven't talked in years.
I'm actually really enjoying the process of translating a game, now I wish I had discovered romhacking sooner. I would love to get this finished, but as this is my first attempt at this type of thing, I'm expecting to hit a huge obstacle somewhere and will probably have to abandon the project. We'll see what happens.

Mad Moham, it looks to me like you've already overcome the main obstacles. Way to go. :)
