Petition to boycott Steams new program of charging workshop creators.

I have no issues with monetized mods via steam so long as meets the following 2 criteria:
1) The maker of the game is ok with it being sold.
2) Selling it for money is the choice of the modder(s) who created it.

I do, however, have a huge issue with the way they are doing it. 75% of the profits is crazy. And I believe they will only pay out after it's made something like $400 or whatever. Meaning that niche mods sold here will lose out on 100% of the profits.

The backlash on the way this is done is absolutely warranted, but will see if anything comes of it.

What this reminds me of the most is when TF2 started taking item idea submissions for potiential future updates, but stressing that it stay within the retro 50's/early 60's vibe of the game. Now they just fling any old thing in there, regardless of whether or not it conforms to the previously set standards

Gabe Newell, managing director of Valve and one of the main guys responsible for Half-Life.

I have no problem with the principle of monetized/commercial mods, and this is hardly something new as it stretches all the way back to mods being sold as licensed retail products for Quake 1 if you want to get pedantic. The way it is being handled by Valve though is certainly nowhere near good enough and needs to be reiterated on an almost fundamental level.

What sickens me the most of all this however is the way the typical juvenile posturing and black & white thinking of the internet has manifested, not entirely unlike the Gamergate shit, and unsurprisingly has resulted in an overwhelmingly horrible attitude towards talented mod creators which has been enough to drive some of them away for good. They are not the bad guys here. They were approached with an unprecedented offer under NDA from Valve, and I highly doubt anyone would sincerely pass up such a unique once in a lifetime opportunity. The problem here was the naiveté and lack of foresight on the part of Valve and Bethesda to handle this correctly and consider all the implications.

Gabe has too much faith in people to actually put out high quality mods. I mean seriously, look at the fucking state of Steam Greenlight and tell me that it's been a worthwhile project when so many people have just been shitting out raw feces and charging people for it

Or just provide a means to not rake modders over the coals. A 25% cut for the modders was terrible, no matter the split for other parties.

I'm still not exactly opposed to this but I agree that the cut for modders is pretty shit. The one thing I can't stand the most out of all of it is that people are already back to worshiping Gabe again.

I use steam, I like steam, but...seriously. Why.

If not for the ridiculous cut modders would get I'd have no problem with this.

It's ok for a company to make some money off the mods using their game, but more than the modder? Bullshit.
