It seems since the controversy with Kojima started, this is what all the events are leading up to. Evidently it's not something they feel is worth to keep investing in.

I don't doubt there will be downsizing like many of the "old" big Japanese publishers right now, but it probably won't be a complete exit from gaming.
If they only focus on mobile games, for me that's an equivalent of exiting videogames anyway.
At first I thought this was preposterous. Then I looked up Konami games and realized they've done very little over the last two years.
I just hope that this isn't a complete end for them, and that they end up eventually doing either console or pc games more in the future. As previously stated, if all the did were mobile games then I'd pretty much consider them leaving the business and I hope it doesn't come to that, or worse.
Yup. I haven't liked or have been interested in any of their games for the past six years or so, and now they're basically the MGS company (and V looks pretty awful to me, and Ground Zeroes was an overpriced joke of a demo). Also, considering what they did to Hudson, I say good riddance if they go out of business.
They're just another classics video game company that's long since lost their way. I wish that hadn't been the case. I really miss classic Contra and Castlevania. I really don't like the 3D Castlevania games, especially the recent ones that are Castlevania in name only.
With games becoming more and more expensive to make, and with once huge companies putting up the white flag, who do you think is going to be left standing ~10 years from now? Just EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Blizzard, etc?
I hate this argument tho. Not every single game needs to be a multi million/billion dollar AAA setpiece. Look at the indie scene, and even some of the lower profile, but well done, games from larger studios.
If they only want to churn out one or two games a year (or less), after sinking damn near all their money into them and hoping they sell like crazy... that's not the market being a problem, that's them being stupid.
There's more competition for peoples money now, more games being made by more people. Sometimes a game like Mass Effect comes around and is crazy popular, then other times you have stuff like Titanfall which was hyped to hell and then was more or less met with a resounding. "OOOooooohh... meh" not too long after launch.
Then of course you have stuff like Minecraft.
These big companies need to learn to devote some of their massive resources to smaller things, test the water, see what catches on. It's relatively low risk while they churn out the next COD/MOH or whatever their companies main franchise is.
Game companies used to understand that. Up to the 32-bit era, it used to be that selling 100k was considered a respectable number. Particularly if the game didn't involve paying for licensed characters/music/likenesses, and was given a modest marketing budget.
I think Konami really screwed themselves trying to make franchises like Castlevania into AAA titles when they were doing fine making much lower budget handheld games and even download titles.
I feel like they tried too hard to emulate big western studios and put too many eggs in one basket when they should have just kept on doing what they do best.
There's nothing wrong with them coming up with huge AAA titles as well, but like you said they need to make sure they've got other projects to fall back on. The ever growing cost of cutting edge, big budget titles was bound to start crashing publishers eventually and we're finally seeing it happen.
And the sad thing is most of them are looking to mobile games as the solution to their problems.
Kojima wanted out of the Metal Gear franchise a long time ago. Maybe this is the chance for him to make a game that he really wants to make.
This, in my opinion is the worst of all the crap that's going on right now. No one seems to think that smaller budget games for console or pc could fill that gap. For the vast majority of them it seems like the only two choices they're willing to entertain are huge, big money games on console / pc or crappy, shallow mobile games. Casual gamers who no longer need consoles to play influencing the mobile market doesn't exactly help matters either.
When this kind of thing started several years ago was when I got out of the console races as it was no longer worth that much money to me to have the new stuff. 6th generation was the last time I had a console when it was new, it's been all pc since then (in terms of new games), though I may change that for the Wii U.
I find it hilarious that people are cribbing about the possibility that we won't get another Silent Hill or MGS game anytime soon! Oh cry me a river! At a minimum both series need to be put on the back burner for a while. The pressure of trying to produce another game to eclipse their best selling game in the series is ruining the franchise. Just because fans ask for one more game doesn't mean that it is the right thing to do. Especially when the series creator just doesn't want to produce yet another game!
Kojima, spread your wings and fly! And like a pigeon, sh*t on those freaking cry babies! :p
I'm over MGS, but Silent Hills seemed promising, especially with the involvement of Guillermo del Toro. I'd also like more Castlevania.
